Power of a Horse's Se*-nt. —There is
one perception that a horse possesses
but little attention has been p J ''l aTV '
that is the power of scent. V ith some
it is as acute as with the do?, and for the
benefit of those who have to drive at night,
such as physicians and others, this knowl
edge is invaluable. I have never known it
to fail, and have rode hundreds of miles on
dark nights, and in consideration of this
power of scent, this- is uiy simple advice:
never check your horse at night, but give
him a free bead, and you may rest assured
that he will never get oft the road, and
will carry you expeditiously and safe. In
regard to the p>ower of scent in a horse, I
onc-e knew one of a pair that was stolen,
and recovered mainly by the track being
traced out by his mate, and that after he
had he-en absent six or eight hours.
Biy Pears mid Pumpkins. —lf you
want big pears or other fruit, just work on
the stalk that bears them the point of an
adjoining shoot, then you will see what you
will see. So says a French amateur, en
thusiastic in the fruit line. If you want
big pumpkins and squashes, just bore a
small gimlet hole in their rind when the
fruit is a few weeks old. and push in along
piece of candle wick with the loose end in
a pan of water. The cotton will suck up
the water, the pumpkin will suck the cot
tun, and by the time your fruit is ripe you
will have the largest pumpkin you ever
seen.
Unmarried Ladies. —The single state is
no diminution of the beauties and the util
ities of the female character ; on the con
trary, our present life would lose many of
the comforts, and much likewise, of what
is absolutely essential to the well being of
every part of society, and even of the pri
vate home, without the unmarried female.
The single woman is as important an ele
ment ol social life and private happiness
as the married women. The utilities of
each are different; but it is vulgar nonsense,
unworthy of manly feeling and discredit
to every just one, to depreciate the unmar
ried condition.
Send your Child to bed. happy. —Send
your child to bed happy. Whatever cares
press, give it a warm good night kiss, as it
goes to its pillow. The memory of this,
in the stormy years which fate may have
in store fur the little one, will be like Beth
lehem's star to the bewildered shepherds
'My father—my mother loved me !' Fate
cannot take away that heart halm. Lips
parched with the world's fever, will become
dewy again at this thrill of youthful mem
ories. Kiss your little child before it goes
to sleep.
it very sickly here?' asked a son
of the Emerald Isle the other day of a
brother Irishman. 'Vis' was the reply ;
'a great many have died this year, who niv

Scrofula, or Kind's Evil,
i> a constitutional disease, a corruption of the
blood, by which this fluid becomes vitiated,
weak, and poor. Being in the circulation, it
pervades the whole body, and may burst out
in disease on any part of it. No organ is free
from its attacks, nor is there one which it may
not destroy. The scrofulous taint is variously
caused by mercurial disease, low living, dis
! ordered or unhealthy food, impure air, filth
and filthy habits, the depressing vices, and,
above all, by the venereal infection. What
ever be its origin, it is hereditary in the con
stitution, descending " from parents to children
unto the third and fourth generationindeed,
it seems to be the rod of Him who says, " I
will visit the iniquities of the fathers upon
their children."
Its effects commence by deposition from the
blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, in
the lungs, liver, and internal organs, is termed
tubercles; in the glands, swellings; and on
the surface, eruptions or sores. This foul cor
ruption, which genders in the blood, depresses
the energies of life, so that scrofulous constitu
tions not only suffer from scrofulous com
plaints, but they have far less power to with
stand the attacks of other diseases; conse
quently, vast numbers perish bv disorders
' which, although not scrofulous ia their nature,
are still rendered fatal by this taint in the
system. Most of the consumption which de
cimates the human family has its origin directly
in this scrofulous contamination; and many
destructive diseases of the liver, kidneys, brain, j
and, indeed, of all the organs, arise from or
are aggravated by the same cause.
One quarter of all our people are scrofulous;
their persons are invaded by this lurking in
fection, and their health is undermined by it.
To cleanse it from the system we must renovate
the blood by an alterative medicine, and in
vigorate it by healthy food and exercise.
Such a medicine we supply in
AYER'S
Componnd Extract of Sarsaparilla,
the most effectual remedy which the medical
skill of our times can devise for this every
i where prevailing and fatal malady. It is com
bined from the most active remcdials that have j
been discovered for the expurgation of this foul
disorder from the blood, and the rescue of the i
system from its destructive consequences, j
Hence it should be employed for the cure of i
not only scrofula, but also those other affec
tions which arise from it, such as ERUPTIVE
: and SKIM DISEASES, ST. ANTHOXY'S FIRE,
| HOSE, or ERYSIPELAS, PIMPLES, PUSTULES,
| BLOTCHES, BLAIXS and BOILS, TUMORS, TETTER
and SALT RHEUM, SCALD HEAD, RIXGWORM,
RHEUMATISM, SYPHILITIC and MERCURIAL DIS
EASES, DROPSY, DYSPEPSIA, DEBILITY, and,
indeed, ALL COMPLAINTS ARISING FROM VITIA
TED OR IMPURE BLOOD. The popular belief
in " impurity of the blood " is founded in truth,
for scrofula is a djgeneration of the blood. The
particular purpose and virtue of this Sarsapa
rilla is to purify and regenerate this vital fluid,
■ without which sound health is impossible in
j contaminated constitutions.
Ayer's Cathartic Pills,
FOR All THE PURPOSES OF A FAMILY PHYSIO,
are so composed that disease within the range of j
! their action can rarely withstand or evade them j
i Their penetrating properties search, and cleanse,
j and invigorate every' portion of the human organ- 1
| ism, correcting its diseasea action, and restoring
| its healthy vitalities. As a consequence.of these
properties, the invalid who is bowed di vn with
pain or physical debility is astonished to find his
nealth or energy restored by a remedy at once so j
simple and inviting.
Not only do they cure the every-day complaints
of every body, but also many formidable and j
j dangerous diseases. The agent below named is
; pleased to furnish gratis my American Almanac,
; containing certificates of their cures and directions
for their use in the following complaints: Costive- \
tiess, Heartburn, Headache arising from disordered
Stomach, Nausea, Indigestion, Pain in and Morbid j
Inaction of the Bowels, Flatulency, Loss of Ap}:e- ;
I tite, Jaundice, and other kindred complaints,
i arising from a low state of the body or obstruction
| of its functions.
Ayer's Cherry Pectoral,
FOR THE RAPID CURE OF
Coughs, Cold 9, Influenza, Hoarseness,
Croup, Bronchitis, Incipient Consump
tion, and for the relief of Consumptive
Patients in advanced stages of the
disease.
So wide is the field of its usefulness and so nu
merous are the cases of its cures, that almost '
| every section of country abounds in persons pub- \
licly known, who have been restored from alarming
and even desperate diseases of the lungs by its ;
use. "When once tried, its superiority over every
other medicine of its kind is too apparent to escape
observation, and where its virtues are known, the
public no longer hesitate what antidote to employ
for the distressing and dangerous affections of the
pulmonary organs that are incident to our climate, j
While many inferior remedies thrust upon the
community have failed and been discarded, this
has gained friends by every trial, conferred benefits
on the afflicted they can never forget, and pro- ,
. duced cures too numerous and too remarkable to
I be forgotten.
