HEAVY BLOW — A cuhti. —On THURS
day last, after showers of rain, hail and
snow, the wind blew up quite cold about
uoon and continued to increase in violence
and cold until a late hour at night. In
the evening the thermometer stood at one
degree below zero, being the coldest evep
j;ig of the season thus far, and with the
exception of the cold Sunday some weeks
ago, when the thermometer was reported
at fourteen below zero, the coldest night
this winter. The wind blew with terrific
force, and no doubt caused much injury to
buildings, fences, Ac.
The large barn of Wnj. P. Shaw, in
Berry township, 80 by 45 feet was most
ly unroofed and blown down, rendering a
new building necessary. The roof was car
ried into the orchard. A caif was unfor
tunately caught in its descent, and proba
bly froze to death, having been found the
next morning. A horse power was also
completely broken up, and other articles
,'njured. Besides the inconvenience which
Mr. S. will be put to by having his grain,
hay, Ac. uncovered, subjept to probable in
jury. bis loss must be iri the neighborhood
of SBOO or SIOOO.
We hear of a number of other buildings
through the country having sustained dam
age by the storm, but not so serious as the
above.
The weather has moderated since Satur
day with considerable lain, and the snow
is rapidly disappearing. The ice on the
river gave way on Tuesday, removing all
apprehension of an iee flood.
INQUEST. —Coroner Miller held an in
quest on Friday last on the body of a man
named Joseph 11. llrilli/igcr, supposed to
be a resident of Juniata county, who was
found on the towpath below the river dam
1 ailing against t the stone wall on the pre
vious aftcir.ooa in an condition,
and died before could be procur
ed to remove a.iui. It appears he came up
from Miftliu with Mr. Rupert in a buggy,
and while coming up the Narrows Mr. R.
lost his hat, the wind having carried it in
to an open place in the canal. After com
ing up a mile or so from the spot, Brilling
er said he would go back and get ll's hat.
Subsequently he called at Joseph Woods'
quite wet, having evidently been in the
water, and after setting there some hours
again departed, as was supposed for town.
Some hours after some travelers on the
road discovered him, and reported the fact,
when Isaac Quay went to his assistance,
and found him as above described. lie
