(. KG UN i' Hot; PAY. — Saturday last, ac cording to the weatherwise, was the day appointed for the sage ground hog to wake up from his torpid state, come out of his hole, and take a survey of the weather. Ii he saw his shadow, then he forthwith re turns to his bed and prepares to take a six weeks nap, indicating the winter will con tinue that long; if not, then the winter was broken, and he refrained from going to sleep. On Saturday we believe he did not see his shadow —and therefore, if the \ ground hog is a weather prophet wiser ,han his biped brethren, we have seen the worst part of this winter. So ftwUe it be. t&fW'e regret to learn that Joseph . Cunningham, eldest son oi James A. Cun- ! ninghaui, late of this place, deceased, died j at Huntingdon on Monday last. Report ! says that he got a bone in his throat, which was extracted, but that inflammation j causing his death. He was quite young, i probably not over 18 years of age. EXHIBITION. —The pupils of the Lew istown Academy gave an exhibition in the Town Ilall on Friday evening, but their liberal invitations caused such a jam of persons as has probably not been seen (we might say felt) there since its erection Numbers, alter being squeezed, jostled, pushed, elbowed, Ac., for half an hour, re turned to their homes, having been unable to get within sight of the door. On Mat urday evening a better arrangement was made by excluding tickets and demanding an admittance fee, which resulted in an audience filling the housg but not ineom nmding any. The speeches and dialogues, which comprised a number of original pieces, many of them of a patriotic char acter, were generally well delivered and warmly applauded. It would pcrpaps be i ividious to mention any of the pupils by name, for, with hardly an exception, they recited well, though some spoke with a very low voice, rendering it impossible to understand them at any distance front the gtaire. The musical part came off with much eclat, Miss Van Uuser and Miss Stray's piano performances and vocal inu sic, assisted by various pupils, having clicit el commendations Iroiu all present. The •access of the exhibition was complete, and we suppose may be justly attributable to the energy of Mr. M. J. Smith, Prin cipal of the Academy, and his accomplish ed assistants, Misses Van Hyser and Stray. Watkr Com pan v Wiu. Jlus- j sell, .Jain \V. Shaw, J). Candor, II Zcrbe, , .1 A. The Convention of directors which met Aug. 27, 1860, at Lewistown, adopted a series of school text books for Alifiiin coun ty. The action of that convention was quite imperfect, and has not proved wholly satis factory, or efficient in produciog the desired result—a uniform series for t/ie eiifire county. Souie districts were not represented; the com parative merits of the different series of books wore quite imperfectly known ; and, to ren der the matter doubly perplexing, two series ! of Readers were adopted. Considerable improvement has been n.aije j in several Districts, but there is great heed , of some more decisive action. See the Ba ; bel! Of Arithmetics, there are now in use Greenleafs, Davies', Parkcs', Pike's, Smiley 'a, 1 Kmerson's, Rose's, Bennet's, and one so old that the author's name is lost. The list of Grammars is also quite ample ; Green, llrown, Bullion, Smith, Pinneo, Clark, Cov ell. There is a refreshing variety of Readers: Sanders, Osgood, Parker and Watson, and McGuffey. In Geography there is, perhaps, less confusion, Monteith, AlcNally, Smith, Mitchell and Pelton. To remedy this Btate of things, the follow ing plan is proposed to directors. Let each board appoint one of its number a committee to confer with the committees of the other boards ; let these representatives of the differ ent school boards meet, and, after due delib tfation adopt, a complete series of books, with this understanding: No district that has in nse a recently adopted series, need make any change until a change is deemed expedient,; hut districts that need to make a change now, and every district when it makes a change, shall conform io the action of the committees and introduce the series adopted. To give effect to this plan requires the con current action of all the school, boards of the county. I beg leave to request the secretary of each board, at the next meeting, to present this matter for the action of the board. There is to be a public examination of ap plicants for the Professional Certificate, in '•eWigtown, on Saturday, March 30th. That w ould be a favorable time for the proposed Meeting of delegates. Directors are respect nay urged to act in accordance with this Ca £2efltion. AZARIAH SMITH, County Supt, j Receipts end Expenditures of Mifflin County, Jf m. C. J iues.
