MiimießAL Comfort for Cows- Now that the coW sea?on is setting in, let the cows, especially the miik givers, have all needful attention. They should be well housed and well fed. The stables should be just moderately warm, well ven tilated, clean and provided with suitable bedding. Aside from the mere matter of food and drink the animals should be kept comfortable. Then, as to fodder, part of this, of course, should be straw and hay and coru staiks; but to expect cows to give much milk on such lean fare is folly. Favor them with messes of chopped roots, of cut straw, or stalks mixed with meal of some kind. A favorite mess for cattle, with a friend of ours is this: Cut up the hay or straw, or stalks, in pieces not more than an inch or an inch and a half long, put the provender in a tub or tight box, and pour boiling water on it, then sprinkle on a little salt, and cover the whole with a lit tie bran to keep the steam in. When cold feed it in messes of a bushel at a tiiae.— Good as this is, it should be varied from time to time, for cows like variety, as well as men. Cows should be salted two or times a week. In mild weather they should range by day in a commodious yard, protected on the side 3, at least, by covered j sheds. And this yard should have a pen | stuck of running water, or a trough kept full frotn a good pump; the first is the best. ! —Agriculturist. Plant Your Money; Don't Spend it. A man who drinks whiskey or chews to- j bacco, spends bis money. The man who j buys good books and takes time to read j them, plants his money. The man who reads extensively in his line i of business, and thus appropriates to him self the knowledge of others, plants his money. The Nation, State, or i j u TrßTJrrrty--w4ikh.sells more than it buys, j .ants its money, but a Nation, State or community which sells, say, 50,000,00b worth of bread and meat stuff per annum, and buys but 81,000,000 worth per year of fabricated goods, in that sells, each year, a portion of tbe real estate, in the shape of mineral plant food, plants its money on j rented land, or on a mortgaged farm,apor- \ tion of the soil of which must be delivered ; every year as interest.
