ATO€TOU:RAL Buckwheat for Fattening 1 Stock. An inquiry as to the value ol buckwheat for feeding purposes having appeared in the Rural New Yorker, that veteran feeder and close observer, John Johnston, sends in a reply. We copy below the material facts of his letter. As to the extent and results of his experience he says : 'I have fatten ed many cattle, and far more sheep, on all or part buckwheat for the last twenty years, and it will fatten stock as well for the amount of pounds as any other grain, oafs perhaps excepted; and I would much rath er have half-buckwheat meal than all corn meal to feed to three year old steers that have not been fed grain. 1 have probably as fat a heifer as is in the State. Her f. cl was buckwheat bran last winter and spring, and pasture only since the *>th of May. Mr. Johnston tells us that :> friend of his fattened 250 head of sheep last winter on throe bushels of buckwheat per day to the hundred head, with straw for fodder and plenty of litter, and he made prime fat sheep, though many of them were lean when he commenced feeding. Some say they have fed sheep ou buckwheat with poor success—the animals losing their wool and getting poorer, but Mr. Johnston never had such luck; and 'no one would from feeding buckwheat who managed right otherwise.' The querist wishes to know if buckwheat makes as solid iiesh as other grain. To this the reply is, 1 1 nei ther know or care, as long as it makes them fat.' He has never tried it for hogs, to which it is said to be poison—which is doubltful. A Mother's Love. Children, look in those eyes, listen to that dear voice, notice the feeling of even ri single touch that is bestowed upon you by that gentle hand ! Make the most of it while yet you have the most precious of all good gifts, a loving mother. Read the un- fathomable love of those eyes; the kind j anxiety of that tone and look, however slight your pain. In after life you may : have friends, loud, dear, kind friends; but 1 never will you have again the inexpressi ble love and gentleness lavished upon YOU j which none but a mother bestows. Often do I sigh, in my struggles with the hard, uncaring world, lor the sweet, deep seenri- : ty I felt, when of an evening, nestling to ; her bosom, I listened to some quiet tale I suitable to my age, read in her tender and ; untiring voice. Never can I forget her sweet glances east upon me when I appear- ! ed to sleep; never her kiss of peace at night! Years have passed away since we laid her beside my father in the cold church yard ; yet still her voice whisper- from the ; grave, and her eye watches over me as I j visit spots long since hallowed to the mem- j ory of my mother. Hew to Take Life, lake it just as though it was—as it is— an earnest, vital and important affair.— Take it as though you were born to the task of performing a merry part in it, as though the world had waited fur your com ing. Take it as though it was a grand op portunity to do and to achieve, to carry forward great and good schemes : to help and cheer a suffering, weary it may be, heart-broken brother. The fact is, life is , undervalued by a great majority of man- | kind. It is not made half so much of as should be the case. Where is the man cr '• the woman who accomplishes one tittle of! what might he done? Who cannot look ! back upon opportunities lost, p'ans una chievcd, thoughts crushed, aspirations un- j fulfilled, and all caused by the lack of nc- j cessary and possible effort! If we knew better how to do and to make the most ol it, it would be better than it is. Now and ! then a man stands aside from the crowd, labors earnestly, steadfastly, confidently. ! and straightway becomes famous for wis- j dom, intellect, skill, greatness of .■ >me sort. ; The world wonders, admires, idolize, and I it only illustrates what others may do, if ; they take bold of life with a purpose. The ' miracle of power that elevates the few is to j be found in their industry, application and perseverance, under the promptings of a * brave, determined spirit. The Strength of Silence- It is a great art in the Christian life to learn to be silent. Under opposition, re bukes, injuries, still be silent. ' It is better to say nothing, than to say it in an excited and angry manner, even if the occasion should seem to justify a degree of anger. By remaining silent, the mind is enabled to collect itself, and to call upon God in secret aspirations of prayer. And thus vou will speak to the honor of your holy profession, as well as to the good of those who have injured you, when you speak from God. SSrlt is worthy of remark that men who have notning to do seldom Lave any leisure, while those earnestly encaged in business, have spare time enough. The latter have leisure because they attend to their own business and nothing else; the former want leisure because they do not at tend to their own business, but to every thing else. As the same sunlight tints the flow ers and colors the rocks—and alternately sparkles in the dew-drop and shines in the broad ocean—so the true religious spirit is present in the humble bargain, the smal lest act, and the lowliest word of kindness, as much as in the grand songs of Hebrew bards and the profound teachings of St. Paul the Apostle, those ancient headlands of Christian thought.
