Ohio pom >logist, writing in a late number of the Cincinnatus, upon the decadence of oreh- j ards in this country, gives the prominent causes of the lailure in the following sum- i uiary: ' in this essay, L have passed in rapid I review, with some occasional simplifications, ; the chief causes of the premature decay of the apple orchards, which m ay he attribu ted to a want of prtper selection and pre paration of the soil; to want of manures ! judiciously applied under guidance of an- ! al\ses that indicate the special manure or ; plant-food required; to excessive fruitage! and early maturity of the trees; to old age; j to the elf. cts of grafting and u-e of Lad ' stocks; to our breeding trees for fruit, j i itlier than for hardiness, vigor and wood j growth; t. sickly sorts being propagated ; j to cold and sudden alternations ; to disease I in the trees and fruit, and lastly, to bad and injudicious pruning.' iv itfi all these evils, to which our orch- i ards are so generally subjected, it is not j surprising that we should often find them ! in a state of premature decay, nor that we j should hear complaints of their being no longer profitable; but who would expect a crop of corn or wheat to be remunerative under similarly unfavorable circumstances, or when subjected to such bitter neglect ? No sensible farmer surely. Of these thirteen cases of decay, at least nine are sinq !y due to the shiftless j management of orchards.
