From Peterson's Magazine for August.
Wagner Salve—-for Tetter, liimjworm,
tfv.—Take equal quantities of the inside
Lark of cider, sharp pointed dock root,
and green camomile. Bruise them well
in a mortar, and place them in a vessel over
a slow fire, with a sufficient quantity of
fresh lard, or butter, (free from salt). Af
ter the substance is well extracted from
the ingredients, put in a small tablespoon
lul of soot, and stir the whole well togeth
er. Thou strain off the liquor, and stir in
to it a tablespoonful of tar, and the same
quantity of sulphur, stiring it until it grows
cold. If the weather be cold, rub the part
affected before the heat entirely leaves the
salve.
Syrup of IT uharb. —Take a quarter of
an ounce of sliced rhubarb, a quarter of
an ounce each of mace and nutmeg, a ta
blespoonful of anise seed, and a little saf
fron. I'ut all the ingredients into a pint
of water, and let it stew until the rhubarb
is quite soft; then add a pound of loaf su
gai —and let it stew a little longer, and
then putin two spooufuls of spirits. This
may be given to children for vomiting, or
a bad bowel complaint. The dose is a tea
spoonful every half hour, or every hour,
according to the symptoms.
Spice Plaster. —The ingredients are:
Two tablespoonfuls of flour, two tablespoon- :
fuls of powdered ginger, two teaspoonluls
of ground alspice, and two teaspoonfuls of'
cloves. Mix the ingredients thoroughly !
together, and make the mixture into a i
ih:ce by means of some hot spirits;
brmdy, or whiskey. Apply the plaster to
the region of the stomach, as warm as can
be borne; it is best to pl.t. j some gauze
over the plaster, in order to prevent the
the mixture from falling off.
Wine Bitters, No. I.—Take four oun
ces of gentian root, eight ounces orange,
or lemon peel, dried, and half an ounce of
coriander seed ; pound them well, and put
them iiito a gallon of brandy, adding two
drachms of cochineal, rubbed to a powder.
Stand it in a warm place, and shake it fre
quently. It will be lit fur use in a few days.
IlTne BUh rs, No. 2.—The ingredients
are: Gentian root, one pound, of orange
peel, half a pound, coriander seed, two oun
ces, cardamom seed, two ounces, rei sail
ders, one ounce, whisky, two gallons.
Tar Ointment. —Take the suet of one
quarter of mutton ; roast it before the fire
and whilst roasting, baste it with three
tablespoonfuls of tar. When the fat is
fully extracted, mix it well with the tar
and when nearly cold, stir in one tablesooon
t'ul of sulphur. A cure for ringworms,
&c.
Choi"t-o Morbus. —(Said to be a certain
cure.) —The ingredients are : One glass
ful of molasses, one glassful of spring wa
ter, and three tablespoonfuls of ginger.
Mix them all together, and take it. It is
said to afford immediate relief.
For Piles. —Two tablespoonfuls of tar.
eight tablcspoonsfuls of lard, not heaped.
First wash the parts affected with castile
soap and water, and then apply the oint
ment. The ointment should be used or
or twice each day.
From Godey'y Lady's Book Jur August.
Bee/, Mutton, or Lamb Pie. —Take three
pounds of the veiny piece of beef that has
fat and lean, or of the chops from a loin or
neck of mutton ; wash it, and season it with
salt, pepper, mace, and allspice in fine pow
der, rudbing them well in. adding a very
little onion or shalot chopped, and, if ap
proved, a few pickled mushrooms. Set it
by the side of a slow fire, in a stewpot that
will just hold it; put to it a piece of but
ter, about two ounces, and cover it quite
close; let it just simmer in its own steam
.till it commences to shrink. When it is
cold, add more seasoning, foremost, and
boiled eggs, and, if it is in a dish put some
gravy to it before baking; but if it is only
in crust, do not put the gravy till after it
is cold and in jelly. Cover with common
short crust or puff paste. For meat may
be put both uuder and over the meat, if
preferred to balls
Br'ifs cak Pic. —Prepare the steaks by
cutting into long strips, and, when seasoned
as above, and rolled with tat in each, put
theui in a dish with paste voutid the edges;
put a little water or gravy in the dish, and
cover it with a good short crust or puff
paste, which must be pressed down upon
that part around the edge. A few < ysters
mixed with the beef are a great improve
inent, adding their liquor to their water or j
gravy.
Yeal Pie. —Take some slices of aknuck- j
el of veal, lay them at the bottom of a pie
dish, wi'h alternate layers of ham or ba- I
pon ; season between each layer with pep
eer. salt and portions of hard boiled eggs j
cut in slices, between the meat; fill up the !
dish in this way, then pour in some gravy
made from the bones, with a little mush
room < atsup and a very small quantity of
sauce. c*ver with short crust or good puff
paste, and bake.
A Richer Veal Pie. —Cut steaks from a
knuckle ot veal; season them with pepper,
salt, nutmeg, and a very little clove in pow
der; slice twosweatbreads and season them
in the same manner; lay a puff paste on
the ledge of the dish; then put the meat,
yolks of hard eggs, the sweatbreads, and
some oysters, up to the top of the dish;
lay over the whole some very thin slices of
ham, and half fill the dish with stock made
from the bones; cover, and. when it is ta
ken out of the oven, pour it in at the top
through a funnel. a few spoonful* ot good
veal gravy and some cream, to fill up; but
first boil it with a teaspoonful of flour.
