ABOUT WEEDS.
Do you ask where the weeds arc! Sorry
to say, in your plowed fields, your meadows
and pastures, and garden. See. right in
plain sight, in yonder pasture, thistles flour
ish bravely, both the native American and
the foreigner, mullens, docks, white daisies,
Johnswort and what not. Haven't time to
grub them up ? Perhaps you have't time
to exterminate them all root and branch, in
one year; but you can make a beginning on
them. Every farmer ought to feel a little
ashamed, or at least uneasy, if ho is not
gaining some headway against this invading
army. lie ought to be able to say, at the
end of every season, that he owns mure free
territory than he did at the beginning. And
if he cannot root out all the weeds in one
year, or two years, he ought to exterminate
some of them, and let none go to seed.
Did you ever stop and think what gross
feeders these invaders are ? They carry
off yearly a great deal of nourishment which
ought to have been saved for the benefit of
your wheat, corn, potatoes, and the like.
Thirty or forty dollars worth is annually lost
on some farms that we know of. Lost, and
worse than lost! How these farmers would
murmur against Providence, if a flood, hail
storm, or drouth, caused them a loss of half
the amount! But they take the damage
from their own carelessness very quietly.
Now, let us speak a word in season. Grub
up at once, the roots of every weed you can
find time- for; and if you can not kill all,
be sure to prevent their ripening seed.
Set that down as a rule never to be violated.
Now in this very month of August, when
every growing thing is hastening to matu
rity, make an onslaught upon the barbarians.
Heap high your trophies on the battle
field ; and ere long tire them, and offer them
up as a sacrifice to Ceres. It will please
the old heathen mightily.— Am. Agricul
turist.

DROWNING THE SQUIRREL.
When I was about six years old, one
morning going to school, a ground squirrel
ran into his hule in the road below me.
They like to dig holes in some open space,
where they can put out their head to see if
any danger is near.
I thought: Now I will have some tine
fun. As there was a stream of water just
at hand I determined to pour water into
the hole till it would be full, and force the
little animal up so that I might kill it.
I got a trough from beside a sugar ma
ple, used for catching the sweet sap, and
was soon pouring the water in on the poor
squirrel. I could hear it struggle to get
up, and said:
1 Ah, my line little fellow, I will soon
have you out.'
Just then 1 heard a voice behind me:
Well, my boy, what have you there ?
I turned and saw one of my neighbors,
a good old man, with long white locks,
that had seen sixty winters.
1 Why,' said I, e I have a ground squir
rel in here, and am going to drown him
out, if I can do it.'
Said he.
'Jonathan, when I was a little boy, more
than fifty years ago, I was engaged, one
day just as you are, drowning a ground
squirrel, an old man, like mo, came al mg,
and said to me : u are a iitth boy ; now
it you were down in a narrow hole like
that, and 1 should come along and pour
water down on you to drown you, would
you not think it was cruel? God made
that little squirrel, and life is as sweet to it
as it i.> to you, and why will you torment to
death a little innocent creature, that God
has made V
' I have never forgotten that, and never
shall. I have never killed any harmless
creature for fun .since. Now, my dear hoy,
f want you to remember this while you live
and when tempted to kill any poor little
animal or bird, think of thi-; and mind.
God don t allow us to kill His pretty little
creatures for fun,'
.More than forty years have passed, and
f have never forgotten what the good man
fcaid, nor have I ever killed the least ani
mal or bird for fun since.
Now, You see it is ninety years since
this advice was first given, and it ha- not
lost its influence yet. How many little
creatures it has saved from being tortured
to death 1 cannot tell, but i have no doubt
a great number; and ! believe my whole
life has been influenced by it.
Now, I want all the little boys, when
they read this to keep it in mind; and
when they see pretty birds or harmless an
imals playing, or hunting their food, not
to hurt them. Your Heavenly Father
made them, and He never intended them
to be killed for fun.— Child'* J'aper.

DYSPEPSIA,
AS shown by the statements of the Board of Health of
New York, caused the death of 70 persons out of 611
deaths in one week, and 131 deaths by consumption in
duced by dys|>epsia. As it is a well attested fact that
dyspepsia Is the origin of the sufferings of a large portion
of those who die of consumption, it becomes tlie duty of
every one to use such precautions against and remedies
for dyspepsia as science and experience have placed be
fofli them, arid which have proved to he efficacious. Of
this character is DR. WILLIAMS' ANTI DYSPEPTIC
ELIXIR, in corroboration of which read the following
testimonials:
From Mr. R. li'Arni, New York.
Dear Sir—My wife had been suffering willi Dyspepsia
very severely for a long time, and has been attended hy
two physicians for about six weeks, from which attend
ance she received no relief. I recently procured your
Elixir for her, and after taking one bottle she is complete
ly cured, i can safely say 1 never knew of a medicine
having so quick effect in so short a time.
Very respectfully yours, RUDOLPH D'ARNI,
Teacher of Drawing and Music, 267 Broadway, N. Y.
Extract of a letter from Mr. H. N. Winans, New York,
to his friend in Philadelphia.
Do you recollect lliat bottle of Williams' Elixir that
was leaking in your trunk, and yon gave to me to get rid
of? Well, for curiosity, I thought I would try if it would
relieve me of the Dyspepsia, which I have had for some
time, and for which it is recommended, and 1 am happy
to say it has quite cured me, and would recommend it to
any one similarly affected. Sigued,
*H. N. WINANS, 91 Water St., N.Y.
Dr. J Williams—After suffering from Dyspepsia for a
considerable time and failing to obtain any permanent
relief, 1 was induced to try your Elixir. 1 must confess
1 had not much confidence at hi st, but in about two weeks
was most agreeably surprised to find 1 was rapidly im
proving in health; I am now much fatter than ever before
and I am in as good if not belter health than I ever was
in iny life. Very truly yours, &c.,

A uti-Dyspeptic Elixir, and being anxious that others may
be benefitted by its use as I have been, 1 herewith send
you for publication, if you think proper, a statement of
the effectual cure produced on me by it. For a number
of years 1 have been suffering to such an extent that I
became so much debilitated, and the digestive powers so
much destroyed, that it was with difficulty I could take
and retain sufficient nourishment to support life. Neith
er myself nor my friends were aware that my suffering
proceeded from indigestion; in the year 1839 my attention
was directed by my husband to your advertisement, at
that time published in some of the city papers, explaining
the causes and symptoms of dyspepsia, mid confi leiuly
offering a remedy. 1 immediately procured and used
some of your medicine with the most signal suc
cess ; from a state of debility, languor, and nervousness,
and complete loss of the power of digestion, so great that
1 could lake at first only five drops of the Elixir at a dose.
1 was in a few days much relieved, and by continuing ii
a short time 1 have been testored to health, strength,
and vigor, which I still retain. 1 lake great pleasure, sir,
in making known the efficacy of your Ami Dyspeptic
Elixir, and sincerely hope it may be the means of induc
ing others lo go and be benefitted like myself.
Very respectfully, ire , HANNAH STILES.
