GOOD ROADS.
The importance of good roads, especially
in a country like ours, deserves more
thought ami pains-taking than is generally
conceded to it. Every American that vis
its Europe is struck with the difference ;
though his native land is disparaged bv the
contrast, he is scarce satisfied with the ex
cuse that it is comparatively in its youth,
or, in many of its vast districts, more truly
in its infancy. This indeed is true, but it
cannot wholly be admitted as an apology.
We are too reckless, too negligent, atld
consequently too unscientific. And in a
letter to the editor of the Tribune, a farmer
in Pennsylvania thus gives valuable hints
as to the science of road making:
"Recollect, fanners and teamsters, that
on an inclined plane rising only one loot in
twenty-four, which is a very gentle hill, a
horse can pull only one-halV the load that
he can ou a level; and that on an inclined
plane of one in ten, he can only pull one
fourth. Just imagine one horse on a level
doing as much as four can on hills to be
met with in every undulating country. If
you cannot see how intimately that affects
your purposes, there is no use in saying
more on the subject.
" Now, by the employment of a very
moderate degree of skill, fair lines of road
mav he had through most districts. In
place of the fearful hills, a most admirable
line could be obtained. Indeed, so laring
are the faults in choice of ground, that I
can only suppose they are frequently com
mitted on purpose, in order to lessen the
weight that a team could draw over a road
that charges toll. In the older States, I
fear the chance of improving the location
of the existing roads is small, as, where
'he land is valuable, and luauv interests
involved in it, the owners are much averse
to changing lines of road, notwithstanding
they would be gainers in the long run, by
so doing; but it cannot be too often repeated
to those inhabiting new States, and who
have still the power to make a choice in
the matter, to secure a good location for
your roads at first. Never mind the con
dition of the surface for the present; ac
cording as land becomes more valuable
around the newly laid out road, people will
nee the necessity of putting a good, firm
material on it—that will he only a matter
of time; but if the laying out be faulty in
the first instance, it is seldom remedied
afterwards. Of course, it would he far
better to have the road constructed on cor
rect principles at first; but this might lie I
expecting too much. On a good broken
stone road, a ho/se can pull three times as
much as he can on ordinary rough ones.
Fake this in connection with the fact about
the loss of power in ascending hills, and !
you can form some idea of the relative val-;
ue of good and bad roads. To sum up all,
a good road is cheap at almost any price, j
wh lea bad o ne is dear, even if it could be
had tor nothing."
