The race for the Great Czarawitch Handi
cap. at ew Market, resulted in the triumph
of >1;. Ten Broeck's " Prioress." The suc
cess of the American horse was received with
great cheering, and she immediately became
the first favorite in the betting far the Cam
bridgeshire stakes, to be run for at New Mar
ket, on the 27th of October. Before the race
one hundred to one was laid against Prioress.
The American horse Lecomte died from an
attack of cholic. Pryor had been stricken
out of all his engagements for the present
year.
Later dates from India have been received
at London by telegraph from the overland
mail. The Calcutta dates are to the 10th,
and from Bombay to the 17th of September.
The siege train was expected to reach Delhi
on the 3d of September, when the assault
would be commenced.
The Indian dispatches state that Gen. Nich
olson had defeated the rebels near Najafghar,
w ith the loss of three guns. Gen. Ilavelock
bad also defeated the rebels near Bithour, on
the 16th of August. The garrison at Luck
now had made a gallant and successful sortie,
capturing the guns of the mutineers, and also
a supply of provisions. The Dinapore muti
neers had been again defeated by Major Eyre.
The rebels were threatening Allahabad and
benares. Largo bodies of troopawere march
in"- from Calcutta toward Allahabad. Troeps
were also arriving at Calcutta from England,
their transport having been effected with great
rapidity. A dispatch to the London Post
„ a vs that the British forces had attacked
Lucknow Castle, spiked the guns, and inflict
ed a heavy loss upon the enemy.
THE KANSAS ELECTION.
From the Lawrence Kansas K.-publican, Oct. IS,
Flection returns have been received from
nearly every county in Kansas, and the re
mit is, every district, except the Leavenworth
sud Atchison Districts, has gone ovcrvrlielm
iu 'lv Free State. Such a display < f strength
was scarcely ever before exhibited between
two contending parties for power us is seen
in the vote throughout all Kansas, except on
the immediate Missouri border. 70 to noth-
l5O to 3, 240 to 0, 1)05 to 11, this is the
wny the vote runs where the polls were not
convenient of access from Missouri. We
said the Free State ticket was overwhelmingly
victorious except in the two districts mention
ed. In this we slightly erred. According to
the true vote cast iu this district, the Free
State Party carried the day by 1300 majority,
out of an aggregate of about 2300 votes. All
was right so far, and would stand so, except
for the fraudulent returns mentioned else
where.
Admitting, however, the Johnson county,
and all fraudulent returns, Marcus J. Parrot
ie elected by about throe thousand majority,
and Secretary Stanton has indicated bis read
iness to give him his certificate of election.
Johnson county has sent up to the Secre
tary's office returns giving for the county
some 1700 Pro Slavery majority. The mass
of the returns are from the Oxford Precinct,
a little town on the Missouri line, or rather
the village, what there is of it, is on the Mis
suuri side. There are not thirty legal voters
living at that Preciuet, and only some 80
were polled the first day. But the polls were
kept open, or pretended to be, another day ;
and now the pretence is made that froin a
thousand to fifteen hundred vote* were polled
the second day. Now, according to the cen
sus of the Pro Slavery men themselves, John
sn county contains only 4DG voters, and a
t ul.population of only SUt) inhabitants ! Of
(Murse, Mich monstrous returns prima
facie evidence of being fraudulent through
o .t. A majority of 10,000 would be just as
reasonable and honest from Johnson county
;.s this 17W majority.
The Kansas Herald of freedom says; GUT. ,
Walker and Secretary Stanton were on Wed
nesday on (heir way to the border, to inquire
in person in regard to the fraudulent election
returns from the Oxford Precinct, in John- !
•on county. They exhibit the poll books,
which are upwards of 40 feet in length. On
enquiry they found, as they report, about ICO
"f the first rotes polled, residents of the
ciunty; the balance of the names arc un
known t- any body in the region, and are
merely fictitious names, entered for the ooca
SKID.
By telegraph we have the following addi- j
tional in reference to the above:
ST. Louts, Oot. 20.—A protest, signed by
several prominent citizens of Kansas, was i
hlel on the 15th inst. against the fraudulent j
returns from Oxford Precinct, Johnson county; '
•>n<] in reply to it. after a personal examinn-!
bun, Messrs. W alker and Stanton published
a proclamation in the Herald of Freedom of
• -oth, in which they express a (leteriuina*
bun to reject the entire vote of Oxford, and
tusjive certificates to the Free State candidates.
he proclamation produced intense excite- j
ment amongst the extreme Pro Slavery men,
Mid throats of vengeance against Gov. Wal
ker and Secretary Stanton were made.
Hn the l'.ith inst. a protest was made against
the Constitutional Convention by
j, n Convention of the people at Lecomp
trom (he Clearfield Rrjnibfican.

been compelled finally to abandon was also
recovered. He was accordingly brought hack
to bo again lodged in jail, but ere he could
reach that sanctuary, a crowd of excited per
sons, as soon as the wagon upon which he
was conveyed in charge of the persons who
had arrested him, reached the centre of our
town, mounted the vehicle with a rope, decla
ring their intention to hang the prisoner with
out further ceremony. By the exertions of
our citizens however they were induced to
desist in case he would make a confession,
and give the names of his accomplices. This
the fellow proceeded to do as well as his fright
would permit him, and implicated several cit
izens of our county, several of whom have
been arrested and some of them committed '
for trial.
Of one thing there seems be but little doubt.
Our county is evidently infested with a gang
of depredators who are engaged in all kinds
of lawless and criminal occupations, and
whom it seemed impossible to detect, although
everybody was aware of its existence. Wo
hope that the late incidents may be the means
of its being broken up and its members
brought to punishment or compelled to leave
the country entirely. We regret to see the
tendency of our usually orderly and quietcom
munity towards Lynch law, the worst species
of lawlessness in existence. Our iaws are
both wholesome and efficient, if properlv ad
ministered, and the people should rest satis
fied with their action.
A Grass Hopper Shower. —By a letter from
Kansas we are informed that on the I4th of
August last, at 2 p. m., a cloud of a singular
yellowish appearance arose in the north, near
the village of Manhattan, and soon the storm
burst upon the inhabitants. It was neither
rain, hail or snow, hut grasshoppers, and in
about ten minutes the ground was covered
with them. They came in droves, and struck
the houses like large hail stones. Soon the
ground was strewn with corn leaves and ears,
some of wliioJi, two inches through, were eat
en off' half their length, some with the huskß
and corn trimmed as with a knife, leaving the
bare coh standing. . Two and a half acres of
buckwheat, three acres of turnips, watermel
ons and all vines on which they feed, were
eaten up, exeept those on the south side of a
piec-T of millet. In fact, they cleared out ev
ery crop except sugar cane, 'there was a
field of sugar cane with corn on both sides of
it; the corn was taken and the cane left. The
grasshoppers remained at Manhattan forty
eight hours, and seemed to be travelling
south, stopping there to feed. When they
left they passed over Ogden high in the air
and did not descend. The cloud seemed to
be about ten miles wide.— Uaadilla Times.

DR. HARDMAN treat! Consumption, Bronchitis. 1 aryng
tis, Asthma, and all disease! of the Throut by MEDICA
TED INHALATIONS
The great point in the treatment of ail human maladies
it to get at the disease in a direct manner. All medicines
are estimated by their action npoa the organ requiring
relief. This is the important fact upon tvhicli Inhalation
is based If the stomach is diseased, we lake met itine
directly into the stomach. If the lui gs are discus d, •
breathe or inhale medicated vapors directly into them.
The reason why Consumption and diseases of the Limes
have heretofore resisted all treatment, lias been because
tfey were not approached in a direct manner by medicine.
They were intended to be local, and yet they were so ad
ministered that they could only act constitutionally, ex
pending lh< ir immediate action upon the stomach, whilst
the foul ulcers within the Lungs were unmolested. In
halation brings the medicine into direct contact with the
disease, without the disadvantage of any violent action.
Its application is so simple that it may be employed by
t lie youngest infant or feeblest invalid. It docs not de
range the stomach, or interfere in the least with the
strength, comfort or business of the patient.

"NO SUCH WORD AS FAIL."
A RESISTLESS REMEDY.
HOLLOWAY^OINTMENT.
Circular to the Sick.
fTHE first hospital sittgeons and medical publicists of
-C Europe admit the unparalleled anti inflammatory and
healing properties of this Ointment ; governments sanc
tion its use in their naval and military services ; and the
masses in this country and throughout the world repose
the utmost confidence in its curative properties. It pen
etrates tlie source, of inflammation and corruption which
underlie the external evidences of disease, and neutral
ize the fiery elements which feed and exasperate the
tnalady.
Rheumatism, Scrofula, Erysipelas
These are among the most terrible and agonizing di
seases of the muscles, the fleshy fibre and Uie skin ; yet
in their worst forms, and when seemingly insticable, they
invariably disappear under a persevering application of
this soothing, healing antidote to pain and inflammation
Salt Rheam, Fever Seres, Stiff Joints.
In cases of Salt Rheum, where medical waters, lotions,
and every recipe of the pharmacopeia have proved use
less, the Ointment will accomplish a thorough cure. Fe
ver Sores heal quickly under its influence, and its relax
ing effect upon contracted sinews is truly wonderful.
Discharging I leers.
A most remarkable and bappy change is produced in
the appearance of malignant ulcers after a few applica
tions of this Ointment. The surmundin: redness van
ishes, and granules of healthy flesh begin to take the
place of the discharged matter. This process eoes on
more or less rapidly until the orifice is filled up with sound
material, and the ulcer radically cured.
A Wrd to Mothers,
The young are most frequent sufferers from exteruar
injuries, and therefore every n other should have tins
healing preparation constantly at hand. It is an absolute
specific for sore breasts, and quickly removes the encrus
ted sores which sometimes disfigure the heads and faces
of children.
Significant Fact?.
This Ointment is universally used on board the Atlan
tic and Pacific whaling fleet as a cure for scorhutio SVc
lions, and as the best possible remedy for wound-' and
bruises, l-arge supplies of it have recently been ordered
by the Sultan of Turkey for hospital purpts.-s.
Both the Ointment and Pills shoutd be us<.d in
the following Cases:
