Accident on the Y. Ceutral Railroad.
Mother Nonralk Bridge Case, almost—Tht
locomotive and Cars in a Creek—Several
Persons Killed and many Wounded.
The local mail train on the Central Rail
road which left Rochester Thursday afternoon
at 430 and which was due at Syracuse ai
8 15 Friday evening, met with a serious dis
aster when six miles west of the latter city
The cars were under full headway, and as
they approached Nine Mile Creek station, be
tween Warner's station and Syracuse, tht
engine suddenly plunged off the track, dart
ing down into the creek some fifteen or twen
tj feet. The couplings apparently broke in
Btantly, as the first baggage car plunged ovei
right on the top af the engine. This was fol
lowed by the mail car and three passengers
and the catastrophe was so sudden that only
one shock was heard above the noise of the
wheels, before all were heaped together in
cemmon ruin at the bottom of the gulf. The
list car only remained on the track, and
those fortunate enough to be on board that
carriage, instantly leaped out, and went to
the rescue of the other passengers. The
scene presented was most awful. The mail
car was turned bottom up, and was found to
be on fire, having caught from the hot stove.
The first passenger car had turned on one
lide, with the front part buried in the water
of the creek, which had risen high in conse
quence of heavy rains. In this car. Miss
Brown, of Toronto, daughter of Mr. Brown,
lite of the Toronto Globe, was riding. After
must of the passengers had been got out of
the ruins, one of the persoDs searching found
i shawl, which he pulled out, discovering a
human being, and he then, with the aid of
I others, dragged forth the body of Miss Brown.
She had been drowned in three feet of water,
and from a contusion on the head, she had
evidently been stunned in the collision.
The second car was turned broadside to the
train and the third car ran through the cen
tre of it, cutting it nearly in two. The third
car was all smashed to pieces, the passengers
being crushed together in one insiss. Here
Mr. Bronson of New Britain, Conn., sat. and
his bowels were torn epen by splinters of
seats. Some slivers of mahogany were ex
tracted from his intestines by the doctors to
day. His entrails are literally cut to piece
meal; and, although he still lives, his recov
ery is impossible. He is a man of iron build
and strong constitution. He crawled out of
the ruins on to the track literally holding in
his bowels by his hands. Fortunately, the
third car jumped so high that it went through
the second car above the heads of the passen
gers. Had it cut through a little lower, sev
eral more would have been killed.
From the nature of the accident, and the
complete destruction of the cars, it is mirac
uloua that out of sixty or seventy passengers,
uo more were fatally injured. There were
several narrow escapes of passengers. Mr.
Ogsbury, of Jefferson, was in the second car,
and the whole woodwork, not one foot above
bis head, was splintered to atoms.
THE INNER MISSION.

There is in Germany an organization, known
by the designation of the "Inner Mission,"

DIED, at Lewis town, Pa., on the 11th Oct.,
Mrs. MARY BANKS, wife of the Hon.
Ephratm Bauks, late Auditor General. The
deceased was about 64 years of age. Her
father, the late Andrew Keiser, Esq., was j
one of the earliest settlers in Lewistown.—
lie emigrated from Lancaster county to this
place iu 1798.
Mrs. Banks together with her husband
united with the Presbyterian church in 1814
at Mifßintown, which was then under the
pastoral care of the Rev. John Hutchison, I
deceased, ihey moved to Lewistown in j
181< where they have resided ever since. '
From the time of her union with the church,
until her disease, her walk and conversation ■
was such as becometh the gospel of Christ.
She was meek and humble, prudent and dis
creet, of a sound uiind and mature judge
ment, and excelled in those modest and re
tiring virtues which are the chief ornaments
ol the female sex.
By her kind and unliable deportment, she
endeared lierseli to those around her, and as
a wife, mother and friend, she was the cen
tre of confidence and affection. Her piety
was nut effervescent, but constant and uni
form. s>he was firm in her attachment to
the doctrine and order of the Presbyterian
church, and a tended constantly when Prov
idence permitted 011 all the means of grace.
Her health appeared to be gradually declin
ing for a short time before her decease. She
wa., however, able to attend to her domestic
concern? and the house of prayer until near
ly her last. She was in the house of God
on the Sabhath before Iter decease, and did
not complain of being unwell until Thurs
day. On Friday a physician was called, but
her friends were not al irmed until a few
hours before her death. When her husband
returned from church in the evening of the
Sabhath, he found her much worse than he
expected and asked her if she knew she was
dangerously ill. She answered she thought
so and at the same time stated that nhe
was not afraid to die, for she put her trust
in Jesus, and no doubt her ble-sed Saviour
was with her, as she passed through the val
ley and shadow of death, supporting and
comforting her. One of her sisters who was
present alien she died, said her departu e
was more like a person falling asleep than
one dying—it was so calm and composed,
without a struggle or a groan.
'1 iie loss of Mrs. Banks will be sensibly
felt by the church of which she was so long
a member, as well as by a large circle of ac
quaintances, as was evinced by an unusual
ly large attendance on her funeral, and nev
er can be repaired to her deeply afflicted
husband and family who are called to
mourn, but not a# those who have no hope.—
" Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord,
for their works shall follow them." " Mark
the perfect man and behold the upright for
the end of that man is peace." J. S. W.

PHILOSOPHY AND FACT.
HOLLOWAY'S PILLS.
THE EXCITISG CI USE OF SICKNESS.
THE blood is the life-sustaining agent. It furnishes the

the waste matter rejected in its productions is expelled
Upon the stomach, the circulation and the bowels, these*
Pills act simultaneously, relieving indigestion, purift ing
the fluids, and regulating the excretions.

but whatever its type or symptoms, however obsiinaie
its resistance to ordinary preparations, it yields readily
and rapidly to this searching and unerring remedy

The quantity and quality of (he bile are of most vital
