WHAT WE PAY FOR GUANO. j
The Genessce Farmer says: "The quan
tity of guano which will be brought to the
United States this year will be about 200,-
000 tons."
Two hundred thousand tons of guano
purchased at fifty-five dollars a ton, (the
price in New York) will take out cf the
country eleven million dollars for imported
manure. For a comparatively new coun
try, this is a startling fact. All the corn
and meal exported in the last fiscal year
amounted to less than two and a half mil
lion of dollars. When will our people
see the folly o! wasting so much of the
elements of crops in all their cities and
villages, and in almost every rural district,
and then sending to the west coast of South
America for ten millions' worth of manure.
Scientific American.
There is no doubt that a farmer living in j
the vicinity of Lewistown could readily
gather street scrapings, manure, Ac. within
the borough every spring to cover 6 or 8 ;
acres of ground, yet nearly all this is suf-
fered to go lo waste by being deposited in
holes. What this will do can be seen on
the lots formerly known as the brick pond, I
which was reclaimed by the borough, rilled
up, and alter bestowing two sixty feet lots
to the school board, the remainder sold for
several hundred dollars, — ED. GAZETTE.]
HOW TO MAKE GOOD YEAST.
"A Country Cook," writing upon "the
bread question," says she cannot make
good bread because she cannot always get
good yeast where she lives, in the interior
of Indiana, and asks the N. Y. Tribune
to aid her, which it does as lollows: Take
3 ounces of good fresh hops, 3] pounds of
rye tlour, 7 pounds of India corn meal,
and I gallon of water. Rub the hops so
as to separate them. Put litem into boil
ing water, and boil half an hour. Strain
the liquor through a tine sieve into an
earthen vessel. While hot put in the rve
Hour, stirring the liquor well, and quickly i
as it goes in. Next day, put in the Indian
meal, stirring it well, and the mess will be j
still' dough. Knead it well as you would
pie crust, roll it out to the thickness of
about a third of an inch, and cut it up into
cakes with a tumbler or something else,
O 1
and lay the cakes on a clean board or tin,
and put them to dry* in the sun. Turn
them every day; let them receive no wet; i
and they will become as hard as ship bis
cuit. Store them in a bag or box, perfect
ly free from damp. When you bake take
two cakes, and crack and put them into
hot water over night, in a vessel near the
fire-place, where they will dissolve by '
morning, and then you use them insetting
your sponge it is called.) as you would
use the yeast of beer; and these yeast
cakes may be kept as long as you desire.

Doubtless this world contains many a

those nnlder forms of Throat and I-un* Diseases,

Hoarseness, Catarrh and Catarrhal Affections, Inflam
mation of the Lungs, Bleeding of the Lungs, 4c. But
j its superior excellence is seen and tested in the more ad

above statement and the efficiency of the preparation as
! an antidote, we refer ttie public to the following testimo

Allegheny, July 19, 1556
Mr. 11. M. Bowman—Dear Sir.—l feel it my duty to let
; you know what your compound lias done for iny daugli
! ter, and wish you to publish it if you can in hope that
1 some suffering one may be induced by it to try your val
I uable medicine and be cured. My d uighter was married
i in 1553, and went to Cincinnati to live, where her hus
i band (James Hoyt,) was engaged in business In six
months after her husband died, and I sent for her to route
I home, where in four months she wasconfined and caught
i cold which settled on In. r lungs. It seemed as though we
could get nothing to help her We tried six different
t physicians for over one year and then sent to New York
to a celebrated physiciin there, and she look medicine
from him for eight months; but be could not cure her.—
j Her rough was fixed and stubborn and seemed as though
i it would tear her breast during the paroxysm of cough,
i and her breathing was at times very difficult. Failing to
get relief from physicians, we thought we would try Ay
er's Cherry Pectoral, and she look it regular for seven
weeks, but it did her no permanent good. We then tried
I Sellers' Imperial Cough Syrup, but with all she still be
| came worse, and it secined as though she was beyond
cure, w hen one day my wife was in at one of our neigh
bor's houses (Mr M tyness') and she saw them give your
Vegetable Compound to one of their children for a cough
and she got three or four doses to bring home and try it.
After iny daughter had taken it she breathed a little eas
ier, and we sent and got a bottle of it, and when ii was
taken there was a marked change for the better. I then
1 got six bottles, the most of which she took as directed
until finally cured —it is three months since, and she has
not had a synipt'Uii of the old complaint, and is gelling as
lusty as she ever was We all uniie in our prayers to
: Gnd that you may be prospered and that your Vegetable
Compound may be the means uf restoring health to many,
as it has to one who is dear to us ; we cheerfully recom
mend it to the public as the best medicine for Lung Dis

I believe B iw man's Vegetable Compound to be the best

Hear what Dr Benson, of Cincinnati, says—(extract
from a letter);
Bowman's Vegetable Compound contains a virtue 111 it
is not possessed by any other popular medicine in my
knowledge. It does not only smooth the disease over
giving it only temporary relief (I ke most cf patent med

performs a perfect cure. G. W BENSON, M. D.

THE GREATEST
MEDICAL DISCOVERY
OF THE AGE.
DR. KENNEDY, of Itoxbury, has discovered
in one of our common pasture weeds a.
remedy that cures
Every Kind of Humor
from the worst Scrofula down to a common Pimple.
HE has tried it in over 1100 cases, and never failed ex
cept in two cases, (both thunder humor.) He has
now in liis possession over two hundred certificates of
its virtue, all within twenty miles of Boston.
Two bottles are warranted to cure a nursing Sore
Mouth.
One to three bottles w ill cure the worst kind 01 Pimples
on tile Face
Two to three bottles will clean the system of Biles.
Two bottles are warranted to cure the worst Canker
in ihe Mouth and Stomach.
Three to live bottles are warranted to cure lire worst
case of Erysipelas.
One to two oottles are warranted to cure all Humor in
I the eyes.
Two bottles are warranted to cure Running of Ihe
Ears and Blotches among tile Hair.
Four to six bottles are warranted to cure corrupt and
j running Ulcers.
i One buttle will cure Scaly Eruption of the Skin.
Two to three bottles are warranted to cure the worst
case <>f Ringworm.
Two to three bottles are warranted to cure the most
desperate case of Rheumatism.
Three to four bottles are warranted to cure the Salt
Rheum.
Fiveto eight bottles will cure the worst case of Scrof
ula.
A benefit is always experienced from the tirst bottle,
and a perfect cure is warranted when the above quanti
-1 ty is taken.
Reader, I peddled over a thousand bottles of ill is in the
! vicinity of Boston. 1 know the etfect of it in every case
So sure as water will extinguish tire sosure will this
cure humor. I never sold a bottle of it but tiiat sold an
j other; after a trial it always speaks for itseif. There
! are two tilings about this herb tiiat appears to me sur
j prising; first that it grows in our pastures, in some pia
I ees quite plentiful, and yet its value has never been
known until l discovered it in 1810—sect mi, thai it should
cure all kinds of humor.
In order to give some idea of the sudden rise and great
popularity of the discovery, 1 will stale that in April,
I 1853. 1 peddled it and sold about six bottles per day—in
April, 1554, I sold over one thousand bottles per day of it.
Some of the wholesale Druggists who have been in
business twenty and thirty years, say that nothing in the
annals of patent medicines was ever like it. There is a
universal praise of it from all quariers.
In my own practice I always kept it strictly for humors
—but since its introduction asa general family medicine,
great and wonderful virtues have been found in it that I
! neversuspected.
Several cases of epileptic fits —a disease which was
always considered incurable, have been cured by a lew
bottles. O, what a mercy if it will prove effectual in all
j cases of that awful malady—there are few who have
| seen more of it than 1 have.
1 know of several cases of Dropsy, all of them aged
i people, cured by it. For the various diseases of Ihe Liv
er. sitk Headache, Dyspepsia, Asthma, Fever and Ague,
Pain in the side. Diseases of the Spine, and particularly
in disease- 1 of the Kidneys, Arc ,lhe discovery has done
more good than any medicine ever known.
No change of diet ever necessary—eat the best you
get and plenty of it.

testimonials and official reports, vouching the
superiority of this machine over all others now

following points, viz: Its easy convertibility
from a Mower to a Reaper and rice versa; its
construction for adaptation to uneven surface :
the ease with which it can be raised or lowered,
for cutting from two inches to eighteen inches

its ease of dratt, portability, and cleanness and
