COUNTY TEACHERS' COX\ LMIOX.
Mr Editor —With your kind permission I i
xrould remind the Teachers and friends of cd- :
ueation generally in Mifflin county, of the
tall which has been issued for a meeting " to
organize a permanent County Association
and make otlier arrangements to improve our
Public Schools." The meeting will be held,
a* per advertisement in the Gazette and the
Democrat of this place, in the Town Hall,
Lowistown, organizing at 10 o'clock, a. m.,
on ]fridav, 20th inst.; and as business of im
portance" will be before the Convention, it is j
to be hoped that the county will be represen- |
ted by at least a majority of her teachers, and !
many other friends of education.
The ob'ect of this Convention is " to orga- j
nize a permanent County Association."- \
Heretofore we have had no permanent and
properly organized Association. The Teach- j
. rs' Association of Lewistown was called the i
M-fflin County Teachers' Association, ttnd it
ge.'ins that most of the duties of a County I
association devolved upon it. Lately the |
Constitution and By laws of this Association i
have been revised, re modeled and reformed, j
so as to name it "The Lewistown Teachers' j
Association," and, as a natural e naequence j
of this revision, we have now no County As
sociation. We want one—we need cue—and
1 t us have one.
It may be asked, "why has the Lewistown
'Teachers' Association done this?" For nu
merous reasons, only two of which I shall
give, as being the tuost prominent. The As- j
sociali >n huti never been properly organized j
nor conducted (according to the views of its 1
present members) tut a County Association. |
Again, according to the old Constitution and i
Bv laws "f the Lewistown Association, its

County Association —being itself the County
Association. The members of this Associa
te m, therefore, being of opiuson that, as since
their organization otlier similar Associations
had sprung up (prominent among which
stands the "MoVeytown Association"/ it had :

The Lancaster Bank. —An adjourned meet
ing ol the stockholders of the Lancaster
Lank was held in Fulton Hall, on Saturday.

Mr. Ditmars argued in favor of this plan,
which would give, with oilier argued assets

Mr. liic-ier said the loan proposition had
been considered in committee, but considered
impracticable. It would work very well un
it! they came to collect the money.
Mr. Mark Gunnel was in favor of adopting
tbe committee's proposition, and opening the
hooks at once. They had lost valuable time
by not doing so at the previous meeting.

tute and lost.
Tlie report of the committee was adopted
unanimously.
Judge Long moved that a committee be
appointed to obtain subscriptions to stock in
tne city and county. Carried, arid the Chair
directed to appoint the committee. The
books were then opened, and over 2700 shares
subscribed on the spot.

Abstract of the Report of the Secretary of
War.
The authorized strength of ihe army is
now 17,891 men. The actual strength at
tlie date of the reltirns, July 1, 1850. was
15,562. 'Fiie number ol enlistment made
during ihe twelve months ending Septem- !
ber 20, 1856, was 4,440. The number
; of offers refused on account of minority
and unfitness for service was 5,594. The
number of casualties during the same time
was 6,696 of which 3,223 were by deser
-7 lion.
All our Indian troubles in the West
have ceased* except with the (Jheyetmes. j
The disposition of the trooops is given
in detail.
It is recommended to extinguish tlie
possessory rights of the Hudson Bay Com
pany, as they owe no allegiance to our j
government and would be disposed to ex
ercise a powerful influence among the ln
! dians against our people if occasion requi
red.
A vigorous campaign has been projected ;
1 against the Florida Indians, General liar- !
ney commanding the military posts.
Much space is devoted lo the considera- j
i lion of the present system of military '
posts on the Western frontiers, and a com- i
plete revolution of the whole system is |
urged. 'File expenses at present are
I enormous, without any corresponding hen- j
j efit to the country or Irontiers.
The great number of resignations in the
1 arinv shows the necessity lor an increase of
pay. It evidences a policy injurious to
professional pride, while the hard service
! and frontier stations of the officers require
of them sacrifices which no other officers
i of tlie government are called upon to make. !
The expense of living has been greatlv
| augmented, and the pay is about the same
|as it was fifty years ago. It is bad econ- j
i otny the report continues, to drive the ac- j
tive and intelligent lioin the service which
they adorn.

A Washington correspondent of the Phil- '
fidelphta Inquirer writes:—Have i ever
told you of a wild speculation here, on a
small, scale? Just after leaving tiie Rail
road Depot, one notices on the right a new
i building of considerable dimensions, and |
i evidently intended lor manufacturing pur
poses o! some sort. It appears that some
one or more adventurous individuals have
purchased of the proprietor of Mount
Vernon ali the trees and shrubbery left on j
the estate, at a cost, it is said, of twenty
! thousand dollars. The building and ma
chinery spoken ot will probably cost ten
J thousand more, and tins ou lay is to he re
! imbursed hv the manufae.ure and sale ot :
Washington or Mount \ ernon canes.—
A ou will readily perceive that it will re
quire a sale ol at least thirty thousand of
| ihese canes, at as low a price as one dollar
i apiece, in order to repay the original cap- j
ilal invested. Ii is easy to sec that the
' speculation is a rabidly crazy one, and that
the only party likely to make anything out
i of it is the owner ol Mount V ernon, pro
vided hp gets his price. But how will
| thai sacred spot appear to American eves j
when it shall have been denuded of every ;
noble tree and graceful shrub, and meet
! the gaze with ail the arid sterility of a i
j barren desert? I cannot avoid a mental j
i connection ot such sacrilege with a course
of conduct that would strip the rich gar- |
' incuts from an unprotected corpse.
