OLD "LUXDY'S LANE."
Alß— ' Carry me back,' <£c.
Fling out! Fiing out!
With song and shout,
Our banners from the wall;
The Old Hero,
Of Mexico,
Receives his country's call!
A thousand times,
In many dimes,
Hath victory graced his brow ;
Shall we fall back,
In this attack.
And leave hi 3 colors now ?
Chorus —At 'em again.
Old " Luudy's Lano,"
From MVme to Georgia's shore,
Our battle cry
Is, ' do or die—
For Union, evermore!'
TU • Loco's grin.
And think they'll win,
By shouting 'feathers and fuss !'
Soup —they say—
Uan't gain the day.
In a Presidential muss!
But Luudy's Lane,
'Tis very plain,
Can well afford to smile,
When such small game
Attack his fame,
Why dont they size his pile ?
t 'horus —At'om again, &c.
C'HAPCLTEPEC,
Without a speck,
Flings up against the skies:
The flag we raise,
With songs of praise
' ■ / it ion and Compromise!"
The South will stand,
A steady band,
\\ ith North, and Last, and 11 est,
Now Locos, pray,
Do fire away,
We'er charging all abreast 1
Chorus —At 'em again. <ic.

Our town has been in a constant buzz of i
xcitcinen; the whole day. Early this morn
ing the delegation from Philadelphia arrived,
iieccmpariic-J hy Gaul s Brass i-.aii<i an 1
Glee Glub, nnci with their music and songs i
. tarred up the enthusiasm of our M citi
zens ; and the subsequent arrivals ot our
delegations were received with cheers and
ether demonstrations of rejoicing, Among
the delegations that arrived were represent
atives from the counties <d Lancaster, York
Perry, Cumberland, Franklin, Huntingdon,
Blair, Mifflin, Juniata, and Union. Most of
them' displayed banners and other tokens of
their devotion to the Whig cause, and a de
termination to elevate Scott and Graham to j
the highest post within their gift. There
were aiso many line bands of music, so that j
our streets resounded with their inspiriting
strains.
At half past two o'clock the grand mass
meeting was organized in the Court House
yard, by the selection of Gen. m. 11. Irwin, j
of Mifflin county, as President, assisted by a
large number of Vice Presidents and Secre- .
tanes. , . , , .. ,
The President, on taking Ins seat, delivered
a brief address, thanking the meeting for the
honor conferred upon him. He was followed
by Judge Conrad, of Philadelphia, the lion. ,
Mr. Sevier, of Lousi'ana, Gen. Leslie Combs,
of Kentucky, and Judge Johnson, of Ohio,
in most energetic and enthusiastic speeches,
which excited much applause from the mass. ;
The speeches were interspersed with the
music of Gaul's Band, and the Scott songs
sung with much ppir.t by the Philadelphia
Glee Club. . !
At half past six o'clock the meeting ad- ;
journed for an hour, after enthusiastic cheer- ,
ing for Scott and Graham.
At half past seven o'clock the meeting as- ,
sembled again in the Court House, w..ich j
was most densely crowded. Speeches were
there delivered by Messrs. Foote, of V ermont,
Merrick, of Baltimore, and many others. j
An assemblage -was also gathered in the
Market Square, and listened to spirited ad
dresses from Messrs. Campbell, of Ohio, and
Williamson, of Pennsylvania.
The proceedings of both meetings were
kept up until a late hour by the speakers,
whose eloquence enkindled gn at enthusiasm
in the multitudes in attendance, and who
were frequently interrupted by the most voci
ferous applause, '
Sinking of the Steamer Atlantic on Lake
J-'.ric !
ERIE, Pa., Aug. 20.—The steamer Atlantic
last night came in collision with the Propel
ler Ogdensburg, on the Lake, and sunk in
about half an hour, with 200 of her passen
: gers.
j The Propeller was damaged, but succeeded
• in getting into port with a portion of the At
lantic's pilksengers. The steamer Clayton
I has been despatched from here to the scene
of the wreck.
The accident occurred during the preva
lance of a dense fog.
At the time of the collision, the passengers
j were all in bed. When the steamers struck,
j the utmost consternation ensued, particularly
, among the steerage and deck passengers, i
I who were chiefly Norwegian emigrants.—
! Many of these, in their fright, jumped over
board. The water gained fast, and the fires
in the furnaces were soon extinguished. It
was quickly apparant that the boat was
rapidly sinking.
The scene which followed was terrible— j
women and children cried for succor from
their husbands and fathers, whilst the terror !
produced by this sudden calamity, deprived
the stoutest heart of the presence of mind j
which was so necessary. The confusion j
which followed was such that even those
who had sufficient- self possession, could do ■
I hut little either in aid of themselves or \
| others. The emigrants, who could not un- i
| derstand a word of what was spoken to them, j
| added to the horror of the occasion by cries of !
| frantic terror, The cabin passengers, and
j others who could understand the exhoria
! tious of the Captain, were comparatively
calm and provided themselves with chairs,
settees, beds, &c., and all the patent life pre
servers on board, Many were thus saved |
i who would otherwise have been drowned.— i
Great numbers of the emigrants jumped
overboard and rushed to certain death with
out making an effort to save themselves,
Amid the wildest shrieks of the hundreds
of human beings struggling in the water, or
. clinging to the boat, the noble steamer rapidly !
! settled, and in a few brief moments the dark
I waters of the Lake closed over her,
The Captain of the Ogdensburg did all in
lils power to save the lives of those who were
| struggling in the water, and 200 passengers
; wore picked up, and taken to Erie.
From Mr. j lonian, of the Michigan Cen
tral Railroad office, we received information
that the following were the number of tickets
issued from his office:—Steerage passengers,
(emigrants.) 217 : deck do., 21; second class
do, 10 ; cabin do., -IS : making 320. In ad
: dition to this number, Mr. Ij. thinks there
may have been 13-3 other persons on board
| including crew, &e., Making altogether about
450. This estimate reduces the probable ! ->
to about 200 souls. This, it is feared, how
ever is a little below the mark.
The emigrants were Norwegians, who came
through by lake Ontario steamers from Que
bec. About 75 or 80 of these emigrants
were left on the dock hy the agent of the
boat, who refused to saner them to go on
hoard. These have now to rejoice over their
own preservation, and mourn the loss of
many of their friends.

FATAL AFFRAY. —Two men, Willliam Jack
son and Armstrong Powell, citizens of Beale

a newly married couple, on last Thursday
evening, got into a quarrel with each other.
Powell stabbed Jackson three times in the
abdomen, and twenty-one times in the side
near the heart and in "the back. Jackson lin
gered until Friday, when he died, after endur
ing great suffering. He leaves a large family
who were dependant upon him for support.

SINGULAR OCCURRENCE. —The Thomastowp
Miscellany states that the schooner Lefrette,
which arrived at Rockland a few days since,
landed a cook dangerously sick with "the Cha
gres fever, who, after lingering a day or two
in the poor house, died, The body* was as
certained to be that of a woman. It appears
that she hqd been on board the last schooner
this fourteen months; she would go aloft
with alacrity, and did all her duty promptly.
She has left papers which state that she run

WONDERFUL ESCAPE. —Lothrop Smith, of
New Orleans, a few days since, while on a
visit t0 the White Mountains, made a misstep
over the precipice near the Flume House in
the abyss below, lie fell into the pool, from
which by great presence of mind, though the
water was icy cold, and he was en umbered
with his clothes, he made his escape : / swim
ming to a crag of the rock on a level \v : th the
water. Here, we are told he was lodged
about forty feet beneath the distance from
which he fell. There was no means of as
cent except by ropes, which were procured
by friends who wore with him at the time of
the fall. He fastened a rope round his body
and was raised aloft, drenched and bruised ;
but the only human being, we presume, that

n large It WELLIXG and STORE STAXD,
Stabling for 8 horses, Kitchen, Wood House,
Smoke House, and other out buildings thereon
erected. There is also aw ell of water on the
premises, Apple, Peach and Plum Trees in full
bearing—in fact everything calculated to render
it a pleasant home.
The store stand is undoubtedly one of the >
best in the country, being situate on the great j
avenue (the Centre and Kishacoquillas Turn
pike,) on which hundreds of thousands of bush- ;
els of grain are annually taken to market; the j
new turnpike from Milheim, in Centre county, '
! intersects the Centre and Kishacoquillas road
between the store and tavern, and this, now
j nearly finished, will largely increase the busi
tiess—so that few places offer more inducements
i to an enterprising business man than this.
The location in other respects is highJy favor- i
able—being six miles from Lewistown, but a
short distance from Brown's well known Mills,
; convenient to Schools and Churches, and an un- j
surpassed valley beyond, whose thrifty popula- '
