"Fruit Caitare In the Tutted States. In regard to fruit culture, our advantages rre soil greater. An on-hard of fruit trees MI this country, even when well attended, Joes not require as much care and labor 111 five vears as i'. does in one in the great er portion of Europe. A single peaeh tree in England or France receives more actual hard labor in one season, than an orchard of one hundred trees in Western New York ; and the price of a single fruit, or at any rate half a dozen, in the markets of London or Paris, will buy a bushel in New York or Rochester. We complain of a curculio destroying our plums and apricots, and this is one ol our greatest drawbacks here; but, notwith standing, 1 have seen more plums or apri cots on a single tree here, since 1 returned, that; on any dozen I saw in England. V> e have the aphis on our cherry trees here, but they are easily destroyed. In both France and England 1 saw both or chards and nurseries of cherry trees al most ruined by them, and they were said to be unconquerable. V* e have fire blight and leaf blight here, and both are sad dit ficulties, but in France and England they are not without both of these maladies. I saw apple trees very seriously affected in England with what we designate fire Mj-Mit—the ends of the branches black and dead, and there, as here, the real cause is quite unknown to the most skilful ctiltivs tcrs. In France, J saw as bad cases of our leaf blight in the pear as 1 have seen in America. The ravages of birds in Eu rope is tremendous. It is almost impossi ble to save a crop of cherries. Nets, •scarecrows, and a thousand expensive and troublesome devices are practiced, tiiat in this country, where labor is dear, would not be attempted, even though (he culture should be abandoned. Fruit stealing is supposed to be pecul iarly an American vice, birt it is not so by nnv means, though probably, quite as prev alent as elsewhere. In other countries, fruit gardens are better protected than in ours, and this gives them a greater degree of safety ; but in France I saw several nurseries at some distance from houses, where the fruits were removed as soon as they appeared, to save the fruit trees from being broken by the fruit stealers. If in America we were to apply ourselves to culture with the same regardlessness of labor that I have seen in Europe, we could produce results that we do not now dream of, and we will come io this by and b\ we are every year approaching it nearer and nearer—our culture is becoming more skilful, more thorough, and more success ful ; but we have only made a beginning. In horticulture as in agriculture, the United Slates of America has a great des tiny to fulfil. Our territory is not only immense, but so diversified in soil and cli mate, that all the most valuable grains and fruits can he produced in such abundance as will enable us to supply other countries less favored in these respects. The inti mate connection now established between all parts of the world has removed the barriers which distance heretotore created, and we have now a clear course. Culti vators mav* redouble their energies with a sure prospect of reward, and if our Gov ernment, in its wisdom, should see fit to lend a helping hand, all the better.—Let ter* of P. Barry, {of Rochester , A. 1.) To Compute the Weight of Cattle. Ascertain the girth hack of the shoul ders, and the length along the back from the square of the buttock to a point even with the point of the shoulder blade : sav the girth is 0 feet 1 inches, and the length 5 feet 3 inches, which, multi plied together, gives 111 feet. Multiply this by 23, tle number of pounds allowed to the foot, between 5 and ? feet girtli, and the result is 713 pounds, for the num ber of pounds of beef in llie four quar ters. Girths from 7 to 9 feet, allow 31 pounds to the foot. Cattle roust be fat -and square built to hold out weight. C.rowing I'iax with Barley. 1 will inform you of a practice which prevails here, of sowing flax with barley ; it may be new to some of vour readers. After the ground is plowed, two bushels of barley are sown to the acre, and har rowed in ; one peek of flax seed is then sown to the acre and cross harrowed. It is then harvested and thrashed together, and is very easily separated when clean ing, by the flax seed passing into the screen box. The barley seems to do quite as well as if no flax were sown. The past season, 1 had thirty bushels of clean barley and three bushels of flax seed to the acre. The land had been in corn the previous season, and was manured with -table dung and leached ashes.— Genesee farmer. 11. M.
