Clover---Time ol' Sowing.
To the I hilt or of the Ohio Cultivator
The great consideration of the farmer
should he to keep up nrni increase the
strength ami fertility of his lam!, ll tins
proper!v attend; <! to, it v, ill constitute a
deposite upon which he can freely draw
without danger ot ha\ inn his dralts pro
tested. Hut this grand oi'ject is lost sight
of by a large portion of our farmers, and
consequently each succeeding crop taken
I'om tlie land, leaves it worth less to the
owner, with the certainty of yielding -a
more scanty return to the tiller.
Where the cultivation of grain is the
principal object of the fanner, without a
corresponding amount of stock being kept,
to produce manure sufficient to keep up the j
soil, it becomes indispensiblv necessary to
clover largely, and turn down a heavy coat ;
-of vegetable matter. As a fertiliser, no
crop is better adapted to a variety of suiis, j
than clover, or a mixture of clover and ■
timothv. i-md not intended lor the plow ;
for a season, should invariably be well set
with clover. I have ne\er known a farm j
run down, that was regularly seeded in j
clover.
In regard to the best time for sowing
elowr, there is some diversity ol opinion,
and different results in practice. Much de
pends upon the season, and a time that j
may succeed best in one season, may Ut
terly fail in another. I have practiced fall
sowing with the most complete success ;
iincl in order to guard against contingencies
would prefer sowing with a fall crop iti
September, or as laic as the fifth of Octo
ber. but no later, as it requires a warm sun
to grow, and became well set to protect it
from the winter. There is no danger of
its hi ing hoven up w hen small; that never
occurs until the roots become large. Fall
sowing has this advantage, it gives the clo
ver a better start in the spring before be
eo ning shaded by the growing crop, and
if it should fail, the ground can be re-sown
m the spring.
For spring sowing i consider the two i
last weeks in March the best time. If
sown too early, it may sprout immediately, j
and so be killed in the cold weather that
follows, if sown late, it is frequently killed
by drought. The best signs to sow in. is
when the ground is hoven up. so us to al
low the seed to settle in the openings. I
have generallv found lrorn seven to eight
pounds of seed to the acre sufficient.
Intimately connected with clover, is the
use of plaster, upon which I may give iny
experience and observations hereafter.

to a greater variety of constitutions and states of the
constitution, than any other. But prepared as it com

children in sufficient doses In Harris, Turner A Hale's
Compound Syrup, it i so concentrated that the dose is
very small, so combined as to ensure a purgative opera
tion, arid so palatable as to be taken, not only with case,
but with positive pleasure.
The (wrrise composition of lhi lyrtip and the mode of
pre paring it, ate the result of a series of experiments
continued fur years. Before offering it for sale, it was
■objected to the test of experience iu the hands of emi

recommended it in the highest term*, and still employ it
in their practice. In addition to this evidence of its mer

Ist A distinguished physician of Virginia, of much

Independent of the smalitiess of the dose, and the plea

of circumstances, enhances its value; indeed there is
scarcely a condition of the system in which it may not

this the gentleman returning to the store, expressed his

it had expelled 200 worms and entirely relieved his son
The merchant added an expression of his great regret thai
he had not had on hands a bottle of the Syrup at the time

GERMAN BITTERS,
PREPARED BY
DP- C- M. JACKSOW,
At the Gerrnaa ScJicine Store, 120 Are'i st.
PHILADELPHIA.
Their power over the above diseases tj> not erxclied-if
equalled—by any other preparation tut he United States a
the cures attest, is many cases after skilful physicians III';
failed.
These Bitters are worthy the attention of invalids.
Possessing great virtues in the rectification of diseases of
the I.iver and lesser glands, exercising the most search
ing powers in weakness and affections of the digestive or
gajis, they are withal, safe, certain and pleasant

C'KAS. ROBINSON, ESQ., KasJoti, MJ , in a letter to I>,-.
Jackson, January 9,1550, saidh
" My w ,ie and myself have received more benefit from
your medicine than any other we have ever taken
Dyspepstaand I.iver disease."
"THE TENTH LEGION," published at Woodstock V.
January 10, ISSO, said—-
" A GREAT MEDICI NET
" We have uniformly refrained from recommending to
the public any of the various Patent Medicines of
day, unless thoroughly convinced oftheir value. AMONG
those we cons-dcr worthy of notice is the German Bitter..
invented by Dr. Hooftand, and prepared by Dr. Jackson'
in Philadelphia. One instance in particular, in which the
superior virtues of this medicine has been tested, hasf.il
len under our observation. During the last sun, iter 1
son of MR. ABRAHAM GBABILL, of this county, was very
seriously afflicted with I.iver Complaint, and "after trying
in vain various remedies, he purchased a bottle of th*
Bitters, and after using it, was so much relieved of in
distressing malady, that be procured another bottle, and
is restored entirely to health."
READ FURTHER A FEW FACTS
FROM ' THE WSLDOX HERA LD," published at Weld, n,
X. C , January 24,1850, which said —
" PATENT MEDICI NEST
" It is cere seldom that we make any allusion to Patent
Medicines, euher approving or otherwise. Unfortunately
for the country, and for honest and conscientious inven
tors and venders of these medicines, the land is becoming
flooded with quark preparations, that arc made alone for
profit and are fit not even for the dogs. In this state of
things it is hard to tell which are, arid whichare not wr.rtb
having If a person gets an indifferent medicine the first
time he purclwses, he is very apt to condemn the whole
of them and buy no more, a®d inventors must only blame
those of their number, (who ignorantly combine plain
medicines together for the purpose of making money.) for
the ill success which attends the efforts of the deserving."
" We believe Dr. C. M. Jackson's ' lloofland's German
B.iters' to he a most excellent median*, and one that
should be highly popular in these days of Temperance;
for they ar n altogether Vegetable In their composition,
without one drop of.Hrokolte Spirits in them. This med
icine is innocent, but strengthening in its effects, and ricS
ly deserving of an unbounded popularity, which, when t:
becomes known, it will, no doubt, fully enjoy."
Jt noc M. M. Noah said, in bis " WEEKLY MESSES
CER," January 5,1530
" I?r Hoof.and's German fS'.tters. —Here is a prepara
tion which the leading presses it; the Union appear to be
unanimous in recommending, aiul the reason is obvious
It is made after a prescription furnished by one of the
most celebrated physicians of modern times —the late
Ur Christopher Wilhelm llooflnnd, professor to the Uni
versity of Jena, private physician to the king of Prussia,
and one of the greatest medical writers Germany has ever
produced. He was emphatically the enemy of humbug,
and tlierefore a medicine of which he was the inventor
and endouor ina> bo confidently relied on. lie specially
recommended it in Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia, Debility.
Vertigo, Acidity of the Stomach, Constipation, and all
complaints arising from a disordered condition of the
stomach, the liver and the intestines. Nine Philadelphia
papers express their conviction of lis excellency, and sev
eral of the editors speak of its effects from their own indi
vidual experience. Uniler these circumstances, we feel
warranted, not only in calling the attention of our readers
to the present proprietor's (Dr C M. Jackson's) prepara
tion, hut n recommending the article to all afflicted."
MORE EVIDEISCE.
The " PiiiLxoELrHt* SATVBDAV GAZETTE." the best
family newspaper published in the United States T. .
editor says of
Dr. HonflantTs German Bitters:
"It is seldom that wcrecommend lut are termed Pat
ent Medicines to the confidence and patronage of oar
readers ; and, therefore, hen wc recommend Dr. Hoof
land's German P tiers, we wish it to be distinctly undcr-
I stood that we arc nut speaking of the nostrums of the day,
that are noised about for a brief |>eriod forgotten
after it has dune its guilty race of mischief, but of a med
icine long established, universally prized, and whiefctw
met th - hearty tpproval of the faculty itself."
i Evidence upon evidence has been received
(like tke foregoing) from all sections of the
Union, the last three years, and the strongest
testimony in its favor, is, that there is more ol
it used in the practice of the regular Physi
: cians of Philadelphia than all other nostrums
combined, a fact that can easily be established,
and fully proving that a scientific preparation
will meet with their quiet approval when pre
sented even in this form.
That this tucdicine will cure Liver Complaint
and Dyspepsia, no one can doubt after using it
as directed. It acts specifically upon the stom
ach rnd liver: it is preferable to calomel in a
bilious diseases— the effect is immediate.
They can bo administered to FEMALE or INFANT
with safety and reliable benefit, at any time.
