i here were 407 deaths in New York
last week, 313 of this number being chil
dren under five years of age—o7 were by
cholera infantum, 30 by diarrhoea, 47 by
dysentery, 33 by convulsions and 33 by
consumption.
The bill of mortality of Brooklyn last
week, shows a total of 55 deaths—f I being
children, and 12 by cholera infantum.
There were 202 deaths in Philadelphia
"last week, of which number 100 were
children under live years of age—3o were
caused by cholera infantum, 27 by dysen
tery, 17 by diarrhoea, and 10 by consump
tion.
The citizens of Brookville, Jefferson
county, have been much afflicted of late
with a disease which is called dysentery.
The last papers of that place record the
deaths of some twelve or fourteen for the
week, and state that about 30 cases then
existed.
THE SEVENTH "CENSUS.—The popula

In 1819 it was 072—increase 037. There
are 95 persons in the town over 20 years
of age who can neither read nor write,
150 colored persons, and 232 pupils in the
schools. Freystown, York county, has a
population of 594, being an increase of
258 since 1810. Hanover, in the same
county, has 1240, being an increase of
180 since 1840. Woodbury township,
Blair county, has a population of 1441.
Catharine township 890, and Williams

duties, but thus far we have heard of no
results.
DROWNED. —On Wednesday morning
last, a little girl about live years old,
daughter of Samuel Hay, was drowned by
falling into the canal near the lock above
this place. She was first missed about
thine o'clock in the morning, hut as it was
supposed she had accompanied some other
children after berries, no uneasiness was
felt for her until a bucket was found in
the canal which site had been seen to have.
It was then ascertained that she was not
with the other children after berries, and
supposing her to be -drowned, the water
was drawn out of the canal, and the body
was found between the waste-way and the
river, it having floated near half a mile,
and passed through the gate. — Juniata

Correapuiulence of the Deily News
WASHINGTON, Aug. ID, 165*1.
I have taken some pains to inform myself of
the state of feeling which exists in Congress
towards President Fillmore and his Cabinet, and
become satisfied that the fair-minded members
of both branches, and of both political parties,
(1 omit as unworthy of mention the abolitionists
and disunionists,) entertain high respect for
theui, both as individuals and as an administra
tion. Thoroughgoing Whigs are enthusiastic in
their support of the Chief Magistrate, and the
high-toned, patriotic portion of the opposition
—which I am proud to acknowledge, is by far
the greater portion—seem disposed to ant with
liberality and justice towards him. The im
pression which the President has already made
on the public mind, is highly salutary, and his
increasing popularity is evident to all. His
prudence, firmness, and patriotism are impressed
upon every administrative act, and these quali
ties modestly displayed, as they arc by Mr.
Fillmore, cannot fail to command the admira
tion of the country at large. By a firm and
steady progress, Mr. Fillmore has attained his
exalted eminence. Great talents, purity of
purpose arid action, and unfaltering perse vc
rence, have carried him to a height whence his
fame and renown will now radiate the world
over.
The Cabinet has gotten along thus far admi
rably. Their movements are spoken of in
high praise. Webster is Webster; and what
more need be said of hi in ? Corwin is well
seated in his " wagon and who shall say the
crack of his " whip" will not be heard present
ly ; Graham stands at the helm of the Ameri
can Navy*, and, "sink or swim, live or die,
survive or perish," neither old ocean's billows
nor his country's foes can disturb bis firm foot
ing. And within hailing dis'anee may Conrad be
seen, quietly seated upon his "War Horse;"
"did you ever hear of the battle of New Or
leans?" The noble McKennan is "at llume." ;
Where else should he be? Echo answers, no
where. The übiquitous Hall is everywhere. !
Now on horse back, in the Stage Coach, on the
Railroad, on board Steamships, all at the same
moment; and, certainly, he should he nowhere
else. To close the file cotncs the peerless Crit- j
tenden, " in all the majesty of the law ; so clear
the track for old Kentncky." To be serious, j
a better Cabinet could not well be formed ; nor
one which would ensure more certainly the re
spect and confidence of the public.
The Compromise Bill though torn to pieces in
'he Senate, has, nevertheless, in all its essential
parts passed that body. There are Senators
who, when engaged in the work of defeating ;
'he combined measure, misrepresented their
constitueneies knowingly and wilfully. 1 hey
d-erve the execration of every lover of the
' nion, and will doubtless receive it. Look at
Mason and Hunter, of Virginia, and Houle, of
houuiana, arid blush for their shamclessness.

hp- 'I that the detracting questions which have
tearfully agitated Ihe hearts of our people

A man named Cliarles Bird, keeping a small
jewelry store in Fifth street, near South, was
stabbed by u party of rowdies this evening, and
injured so badly that be died in a few minutes

southern part of the city are suspected, and will
doubtless be arrested before morning. This
makes the second murder in our streets during
the past forty-eight hours.
Hon. Lewis C. Levin was nominated for Con

NEW YORK, Aug. 21.—The steamer Philadel
phia, Capt. Pearson, from Chagres, 7th inst ,

The accounts from the various diggings are
favorable. New diggings have been discovered
lately, on the upper waters of the Yuba and
Feather rivers, which promise well, hut the wa
ters are yet too high to work them successfully.
A lump of gold and quartz, weighing thirty
pounds, has been dug at the dry diggings.
In tfce Southern mines many murders have

The settlement at Trinidad Bay was in a state
of conflict with the Indians, and eight had been

At Humbolt and Klamath the same difficulties

WASHINGTON, August 14th, 1650. —Portugal
has made an offer (under duress) to pay every
dollar claimed by the citizens of the United
States without deducting a penny ; but she
states to Mr. Clay, our Charge at Lisbon, that
she did so, not because she was convinced of
their justice, but because she had not the means
of repelling force by force ; and for this reason
she is ready to do anything for the sake of
peace. As to tiie Armstrong, she thinks that
the obligation of neutrals only consists in this,
that they shall not favor one of the belligerants
more than another. At the time the Armstrong
was taken at Fayal, the British lieet carried 240
guns and 1200 men, the Portuguese had seven
dismounted guns and eight artillery soldiers,
with one hundred militia, without flint stones,
to keep the peace between the belligerants;
while John VI., her King, was in Brazil, pro
tected by a British fleet, and Portugal had only
been saved from the hands of Massena by the
Duke of Wellington at Torres Vedras. Before
all this the Paris Moniteur, of 11th November,
I*o7, had declared that the house of Braganza
bad ceased to reign. There was no way of sav
ing Portugal but by British assistance, which
was freely rendered. If the United States in
sists that all neutrals are answerable for dama
ges done to our vessels in their ports in time of
war, without taking into consideration the means
these neutrals may have to make their own
rights respected, the consequence will be that
in the breaking out of a marine war, they will
close their ports to us, and Portugal, I believe,
has said so to our diplomatic representative in
Lisbon. Otherwise Count d'Ojal, the present
minister of foreign affairs, is a man of scrupu
lous diplomatic etiquette, and it is yet possible
that the quarrel about the Armtrong may be
referred to the arbitration of a third power; or
that Portugal may average the claim for which
provision ought to have been made at the Trea
ty of Ghent.
Dreadful Tragedy.
We learn from the Danville Intelligencer of
the ICth inst., that quite an excitement existed
in that community for a week past, in conse
quence of the mysterious death of a young and
I beautiful girl, named Miss Smith, from Luzerne
county. Tho circumstances that have come to
light show conclusively that there has been foul
- play somewhere, and that of the most inhuman
and depraved character—indeed of such a na
ture as to cause the ruin and death of a young
and beautiful girl, at that age when life is so
eminently desirable, and which has also caused
the inevitable disgrace and unhappiness of a
highly respectable family. She was on a visit
to a sister residing near Danville, and shortly
after her arrival thero was taken dangerously ill
—a physician was called, but to no purpose,—
and life was fast ebbing away. She seemed to
' be greatly distressed, and after earnest entreaty,
she disclosed the cause. Her disclosures irnpli
; eatod two persons in the transaction, who reside
in the village where she did—one a lawyer and
the other a physician. The latter has since been
arrested. We hope, if guilty, they may both
receive their just reward at the hands of the law.
