agricultural. MTMEL WTItTZEL. The following extract from a paper by ihe Abbe Rozier, will show very conclu sively the great value of this root as a ma terial in the food of stock. He says " In living these roots to cattle lor foou, thev are first washed and then cut into pieces about the size of a nut. It is alu ays best to accompany them, when given to horned cattle, with clover, or other hay or straw, and if the hay or straw has been previously cut fine, it will be preferable. • • If horses are fed with this root with a proportion of cut hay or straw, (half of each) they will be fat, vigorous, and healthy. If they are worked severely, a little oats or corn may be added. It is thus they are treated in Germany, where this root stands in the stead of meadows or grass lands, and whose excellent horses are well know n. " Hogs fed upon them raw , alter they have been cut up and mixed with milk or other drink, fatten as well upon them as upon boiled potatoes. . As to the eattie, much will depend on the proportion of other fodder which you allow them. Cows fed twice a day in u inter upon eighteen pounds of these roots at each time, together with four pounds of liav or chopped straw, will give as much milk as in summer, and they will be kept in the best possible state. .. Oxen fed with forty weight of these roots per davy with ten pounds of hay for one month, and after that with fifty weigh; per dav of the roots alone, will be fat enough for sale in two months more. cgcrlia u r o u a. BOYS AYD GIKLS, The times have indeed sadly changed. One entir? portion of liutnan life struck out. It is now boyhood or manhood. There is no conservative state —(we do not speak politically.) Once there were intermediate states of boyhood—barefooted and bean porridge eating suite—a spelling and cyphering period—when there were bovs to do the chores and go errands— when apprentice indentures were in fash ion. and manhood was well defined by the " freedom suit.'' But there are no such things now. The child steps out of his diaper and frock into a long tailed coat and high heeled boots, lie exchanges the breast for the cigar. Not one of the present generation has ever seen a real bona-fiJe " nine-day-old" pot of bean-por ridge ; and Noah Webster's spelling-book is crowded out of school by high works on philosophy and metaphysics. There are no apprentices now. Young men take a few lessons in the trade they fancy, and then set up for themselves. But the present generation is as destitute of girls as boys. It is either baby or lady 1 —nursery or parlor. The mother tends her infant or waits upon her daughter. Instead of spinning flax for her father's shirt they reel silk for the ladies' fair : and instead of knitting stockings and mending trousers for their brothers they work lace and make stays for themselves. The mother milks, churns, mends, washes and irons—and their daughters—the " ladies" —read novels, dress, and make parties in stead of puddings, and cook from the book rather than from knowledge. We should be delighted to see a genera tion of boys and girls, in looks, actions, and dress ; we should then hope for health and strength, industry and sobriety, frugal ity and economy, prosperity and happiness. We go for protection to this class of the community. Every father should impose a tariff, one that should amount to entire prohibition, on the introduction of fashion able follies into the family, lie should protect and enforce home industry. lie and his wife and children should enter into a 44 Home League" on the subject. This is the tariff that will restore confidence. This is the bank that will freely discount' and never suspend.— .llex. Index. THE HEART. —The little 1 have seen of; the world, and known of the history of ■ mankind, teaches me to look upon the er rors of others in sorrow, not in anger. But prepared as it com monly is, in the form of tea, it can seldom be given to children in sufficient doses. In Harris. Turner & Hale's Compound Syrup, it is so concentrated that the dose is very small, so combined as to ensure a purgative opera tion, and so palatable as to be taken, not only ith ease, but with positive pleasure. The precise composition of this syrup and the mode of preparing it, are the tesult of a series of experiments continued for years. Before offering it for sale, it was subjected to the test of experience in the hands of emt ncnt physicians, in Philadelphia and elsew here, w ho have recommended it in the highest terms, and still employ it in their practice. In addition to this evidence of its mer its, we offer the following, selected from a number of un solicited testimonials. Ist A distinguished physician of Virginia, of much experience, writes of It thus : "I should have written before this, but felt disposed first to try the efficacy of your Vermifuge. I have used more than half the quantity received, and the experiment has been most successful. ! really belie re that it posses ses adrant lges ortr any other f 'irmifuge I hart erer used. Independent of the smallness of the dose, and the plea santness of the syrup (great advantages in dosing chil dren) the advantage of administering it under a variety of circumstances, enhances its value; indeed there is scarcely a condition of the system in which it may not be administered. Yours, Ac." 2d. A respectable physician of Lebanon county, in this state, writes— " 1 have been iti the habitofpresrribing your Compound Syrup of Bpigrlia for some time past, and have found it an excellent worm medicine, particularly for rhildren.— Please forward per bearer 2 doz. bottles.—Yours. Ac." 3d. —An intelligent merchant of Virginia to whom we had previously sold the. syrup, writes : "Since my return home, 1 find that your Syrup of Spi gelia has come into general use inthis neighborhood. We have sold what we had on hand, and it gave such satis faction that it is now calledforevey day. You will please put us up 5 or 6 dozen in a small package, and send to the care of \V. Anderson & Co., Richmond, as soon as possi ble, and forward the bill per mail.—Yours, Sec." 4th.—A respectable merchant of Ohio, on a late visit to Philadelphia, stated, that some lime since he had been ap plied to by a customer for a vial of ' Ver mifuge for his son. Not having the article asked for, tie advised a trial of Harris, Turner & Hale's Compound Syrup of Spigoliu ani| gave him a part of a bottle which was all that remained in tlie store. A day or two after this the gentleman returning to the store, expressed his surprise and delight at the effect of the Syrup, declaring it had expelled 200 worms and entirely relieved his son The merchant added an expression of his great regret that he had not had on hands a bottle of the Syrup at the time when his own little daughter died, as he confidently be lieved it would have saved her life. sth—A gentleman of Hudson, N. Y., having sent a bot tle of Harris, Turner Ac Hale's Compound Syrup of Spi gelia, to a young friend w ho had tried in vain a great num ber of worm medicines, writes, that his friend was imme diately relieved ; the words of the patient were : " It took every worm out my body." READ AND BE CONVINCED. CHAS. ROBINSON, Esq., Easton, Mi, in a letter to Dr ; Jackson, January 9, 1650, said — ! "My wife and myself have received more benefit from your medicine than any other we have ever taken for the Dyspepsia and Ltver disease." j "THE TENTH LEGION," published at Woodstock, Va January 10.1650, said— "A GREAT MEDICINES j "We have uniformly refrained from recommending to j the public any of the various Patent Medicines of the day, unless thoroughly convinced of their value. Among those we consider worthy of notice is the German bitters, invented by Dr. Hoojland, and prepared by Dr Jackson, in Philadelphia. One instance in particular, in which the 1 superior virtues of this medicine has been tested, has fa!- : len under our observation During the last summer, a j son of ME. ABRAHAM GRABILL, of this county, was very seriously afflicted with Liver Complaint, and after trying i In vain various remedies, he purchased a boitleofthe Bitters, and after using it, was so much relieved of his distressing malady, that he procured another bottle, sn< is restored entirely to health." READ FURTHER A FEW FACTS FROM " THR WSLDON HERALD," published at Wehlon, i S. C., January 24,1650, which said — " PATENT MEDICINES j "It is very seldom that we make any allusion to Paten! Medicines, either approving or otherwise. Unfortunate!; for the country, and for honest and conscientious i tors and venders of these medicines, the land is becoming j flooded with quack'preparations, that are made alone for profit and are fit not even for the dogs. In this state of j things it is bard to tell which are, and which are not worth having If a person gets an indifferent medicine the first j time he purchases, he is very apt to condemn the whole of them and buy no more, and inventors must only blame ! those of their number, (who ignorant);- combine ptisn medicines together for the purpose of making money,) for the ill success which attends the efforts of the deserving ." " We believe Dr. C. M. Jackson's * Hoofland's German Bitters' to be a most excellent medicine, and one that should be highly popular in these days of Temperance; for they are altogether Vegetable in their composition, I without one drop ot.Hcoholic Spirits in tbem. This cied , icine is innocent, but strengthening in its effects, and rich- I Iv deserving of an unbounded popularity, which, w hen it becomes known, it will, no doubt, fully enjoy." JIDGB M. M.NOAH said, in his " WEEKLY MESSEN GER," January 5,1550. " Dr. Ilvofiand's German Bitters —Here is a prepara tion which the leading presses in the Union appear to be unanimous in recommending, and tha-ceason is obvious, it is made after a prescription furnished by one of the i most celebrated physicians of modern times—the lale Dr. Christopher Wilhelm Hoofland, professor to the Uni versity of Jena, private physician to the kiug of Prussia, and one of the greatest medical writers Germany has ever | produced. He was emphatically the enemy of humbug, and therefore a medicine of which he was the inventor i and endorsor may bo confidently relied on. lie specially recommended it in Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia, Debility, | Vertigo, Acidity of the Stomach, Constipation, and all ' complaints arising from a disordered condition of the stomach, the liver and the intestines. Nine Philadelphia papers express their conviction of its excellency, and sev eral of the editors speak of Us effects from their own indi vidual experience. Under these circumstances, we feel I warranted, not only in calling the attention of our readers to the present proprietor's (Dr.C. M. Jackson's) prepara tion, but in recommending the article to ail afflicted." MORE EVIDENCE. The "PHILADELPHIA SATURDAY GAZBTTK," the best family newspaper published in the United States. The editor says of Dr. Iloofland's German Bitters: " It is seldom that we recommend what arc termed Pat ent Medicines to the confidence and patronage of our readers; and, therefore, when we recommend Dr. Hoof land's German Bitters, we wish it to be distinctly under stood that we are not speaking of the nostrums of the day, that are noised about for a brief period andjthen forgotten after it has done its guilty race of mischief, but of a med icine long established, universally prized, and which hi! met the hearty approval of the faculty itself." Evidence upon evidence has been received (like the foregoing) from all sections of the Union, the last three years, and the strongest testimony in its favor, is, that there is more ot it used in the practice of the regular Physi cians of Philadelphia than all other nostrums combined, a fact that can easily be established, and fully proving that a scientific preparation will meet with their quiet approval when pre sented even in this form. That this medicine will cure Liver Complaiot and Dyspepsia, no one can doubt after using it as directed. It acts specifically upon the stom ach and liver; it is preferable to calomel in ail bilious diseases— the effect is immediate. They can be administered to FEMALE or INFANT with safety and reliable benefit, at any time. BEWARE OF COUNTERFEITS. This medicine has attained that high charac ter which is necessary tor all medicines to at tain to induce counterfeiters to put forth a spu rious article at the risk of the lives of those who are innocently deceived. Look irell to the marks of the genuine. They have the written signature of C. M. JACKSON upon the wrapper, and the name blown in the bottle, without which they art spurious.
