Hi! the Steamer Xiitirara at llostou.
France.
An Aid-tie-camp of (Jen. Paraguay de
llilliers has just reached Paris with iinpor
taiit despatches —the nature of which has,
in pari, transpired. It would seem that
tl,ere is little likelihood of an understand
ing being come to between the gallant Gen
eral and the government of the Cardinals,
owing to the manifest jealousy of French
influence, entertained by the latter, while
the Cardinals are for placing the Pope un
der the protection of a mixed garrison of
Austrians and Italians. Gen. De llilliers
insists upon having a French force of 12,-
000 men in the city of Home. This pro
position has been met by the Cardinals
with a decided refusal, and affairs are as
far as ever from being arranged.
The French Funds continue to rise.—
The five per cents have reached 92f. 55c.
Austria.
The Breslau Gazette , of the Gih, says
that the public mind in Vienna is much ta
ken up with reports of a coup (fetal—re
ports which are even current in military
circles. The day named for putting it
into effect, was the 6th orTih instant. The
military measures are really formidable.
Within a circle of six miles around Vien
na, the houses are full of soldiers. There
are at least 50,000 men in Vienna, and
50,000 more could be procured by the
railways in the course of three or four days.
The reply of the Austrian Cabinet to a
note from Prussia, on the subject of the
Erfurt Assembly, is as follows :
The Austrian Cabinet is sorry to find
that its former communications, instead of
producing the desired effect upon Prussia,
have elicited replies which, though evasive,
are full of signification. In its tormer re
monstrances, the Austrian C abinet fully
stated its view of the question, and of the
step which Prussia was taking.
Since these remonstrances were unheed
ed. Austria will not condescend to wage a
Mar of words with the Prussian Cabinet,
but reserving all her objections, protests,
and rights till a further opportunity, she
wishes it to be understood that her silence
is not to be construed into an acquiescence
with the Prussian project, nor with a dere
liction of her rights.
Gen. Count Urina, who commanded the
Imperialists when they were defeated at
it.iab by the Hungarians, has committed
suicide at Verona.
The tvphus fever was raging fearfully at
Verona, on the 20th ult. No less than
ihirty medical men had been seized with it
from visiting their patients.
Prussia.
BERLIN, Jan. 7.—lt is understood that
the ministerial crisis was over, and that on
this day the Chambers would receive a
Royal message, proposing the oath to be
taken to the Constitution, and accepting
the same, with some slight amendments.
Turkev--Tbe Hungarian and Polish
Refugees.
The correspondent of the London Times,
under date of Dec. 19th, says : A courier
has arrived here from St. Petersburg, with
the Emperor's answers to the last commu
nication made to his Imperial Highness,
by the Sublime Porte, with regard to the
questions of the Polish and Hungarian ref
ugees.
In a former letter I told you that the Tur
kish ministers were willing to consent to
the expulsion of the Poles who had been
concerned in the late Hungarian Insurrec
tion, but that they objected to the expul
sion of the Polish Rul'ugees who were res
ident in Turkey previously to that event,
and who were provided with French and
other passports.
The Czar lias agreed to the terms pro
posed by the Porte, and Dembinski and tfie
other Holes who served in Ilnngary are to
be expelled. Their countrymen resident
in Turkey, who were not concerned in that
insurrection are to remain unmolested.
If, however, any one, without reference
to the country under whose protection he
may be, shall, whilst resilient in the Otto
man Empire, be guilty of any act hostile to
the government of the Emperor Nicholas,he
shall, at the demand of the Russian Envoy,
be expelled from the Sultan's dominions.
Kossuth and the Hungarian refugees
are to he confined in a fortified tower in
the interior. They are not to be close
close prisoners; but their place of resi
dence will be under the constant surveil
lance of the Turkish authorities.
The correspondent of the Morning Her
(Ud, however, writing on the same day,
averts that the Emperor of Russia has refu
sed to accept the Sultan's guaranty for the
conduct of the Poles, and that the matter
is as far from being settled as ever.
The trial of David Knepley, for the murder
of his father, was commenced in Ilarrisburg

plea of the defence will be insanity, as is usual
in euUi cases.

OPPRESSIVE TAXATION. — We learn from the

given up their commissions, rather than incur

Cheap Cash Store, and buy some warm clothing.
JONES has a Tery large stock, and sells inuch
cheaper than any body else.
ECOIO.VYi-The amount of money deposited
in the Savings Bank of Great Britain is over
<£21,000,000 sterling, or more than one hundred
millions of dollars ! This is an enormous amount
of money, and is the savings of many who have .
labored hard, and by pursuing a habit of strict
economy they have succeeded in maintaining
themselves handsomely, and laid up a compe
tency for old age. The question then arises,
what is true economy ? lit the exercise of econ
omy it is essential to have good judgment—a cor
rect notion of matters and things. Every indi
vidual has in the courseof a life time, to purchase
a large amount of goods, even if for his or her
own support, merely. It will, in the course of
years, amount to a considerable sum. Then the
way to practice economy in this respect is to
buy for CASH, as it is very dangerous to go in
debt, particularly with the storekeepers. Buy
for CASH, and buy always OOOD GOODS, and at the
lowest prices; and to enable the public to get
goods of every grade and quality, at the lowest
possible prices that they can be sold over the
cost of manufacturing, C. L. JONES is conduct
ing a large establishment on the CASH SYSTEM,
and his business has now grown to such an enor
mous extent that he buys nearly all bis goods
directly of the importers and manufacturers for
cash, and sells them at the smallest considerable
profits, and in this way he is enabled to sell his
goods at least TWENTY PER CENT, lower than all
other merchants. Let any one make a calcula
tion of the amount of goods they would proba
bly buy in one year, and they will find that 20
percent, or one-fifth of the amount would be a
considerable item. Let this run on for some
years, and they will have a sura saved in amount
of no little consequence.
It is now admitted i>y all other merchants, as
well as by the public generally, that C. L. JONES
has the largest and best selected stock of goods
ever shown before in Lew is to wn, and that he
can undoubtedly bnv goods cheaper than any
other merchant—his business being so large and
purchasing in such immense quantities.
Country persons visiting Lewistown to pur
chase goods for CASH will soon be convinced of
the foregoing by calling at the Celebrated
-Vri c Cheap Cash Store of C. L. JONES, and in pro
portion to the population of this country with
Great Britain, the amount cf savings might be
quite equal, and probably greatly exceed tbo
estimate made.
