Several years ago he came to this
sjuuly, landing In Ousllo Gat-den, New
lork, from.whcro ho footed It tliroiigli
the wild and rough of winter storms to
lolllet, Illinois where ho .secured em
ployment. He had been lit the town
but a short time when tlie smiles aud
wiles of woman lured him lo the snares
of matrimony. Ho wedded and for 11
time life run . smoothly enough
and then whon all seemed brightest a
cloud lloated over the horizon of their
bliss, aud John decided to come east.
A man was sold to be at the bottom of
it. Tho amiablo Mrs. Mardo preceeded
hlni to friends in Nesquohonlug and
wheu tho unsuspecting anU confiding
husband followed on he found his
suonse quietly domiciled with another
man. Tho fellow was a Polish Jew and
Johu Mardo's heart revolted. All old
hopes were crushed, life was not north
living. Therl in a compassionate mo
ment Mrs. Mardo relented and they
kissed aud made up aud they came to
Lehlghton. Hero John spent a brief
poiiod of unalloyed bliss, when In evil
moment ho took to drink. It went to
his head. His wholo body was on tiro
as their rushed back to him u memory
of Ids wrongs aud he started in to do
up the repentant Mrs. Mardo. He
pushed her through tho window anil
she dropped "ker smash'' among the
rose bushes; then ho punched her, and
she scratched. The longer they fought,
the madder John got, until he made
up his mind to kill her. That settled
it. Constable Raworth was taken to
scene aud an hour later John .Mardo,
tho once proud husband, was figuring
out the costs in jail. This was Thurs
day and next morning when Johu had
slept off tho entanglements ot his
drunk, he found that ho was "busted,"
nnd his liberty lit litigation. There
was only one thing lor him to do. Ho
put his back against Lehlghton, shook
tho dust of our macadlmized streets
from his shoes. He and Mrs. Mardo
may never meet again, but this as It
may, John will bear the scars of unlov

The Investigation into the manner
uud means whereby William F. Keck,
the condemned murderer, secured tho
poison with which ho committed suicide
on tho night before the day fixed for
hU execution in Lehigh couuty prison,
has resulted in failure as far as dis
covering the person who gave him the
poison. The coroner's jury oxamlnnd
witnesses all Friday until late in the
evening, and after deliberating an
hour, rendered the following verdict:
"We find the cause of death was ar
senical poison, self-administered, with
suicidal intAt, procured and provided
by some person or persons unknown
to the jury; and furthermore, we find
that the apparent laxity of prison dis
cipline and the evident conflict of the
authorities calls for prompt action and
reform, and stricter enforcement of
prison rules."
