THIS T1GKKT.
The ticket nominated by tho Democratic
part last Monday Is qtillo creditable to tl.o
Democracy of the county. It Is headed
with S. S. Drelier, for Judnc; Hon. Allen
Cralr, for Opngrew. and Hon. V. M. ltap-
slier, for Slato Senator; V. 1. Scrnmcl, for
lleglsler and liccordcrj James T. Mill
hearn, for treasurer; Henry filler and
Daniel Cannon, for commissioners; Hue.li
Ferry, for Assembly; CI. W. Jforthlmer
and A. G. l'ctcrs, for County Auditors.
The ofllces are pretty fairly equalized as
regards geographical location. Three go
to the upper end; Mauch Chunk gels two
and the lower end two. There aro many
however who llnd objections lo the geo
graphical situation without giving the
status of affairs due consideration. For
Instance the upper end only has but two
Democrats now filling positions of public
placp, via: Domiilck O'Donnel, count)
commissioner, of Summit Hill, and 11'. W.
Buck, coroner, of Wcalheily, while the
lower end lias the sheriff, treasurer, asso
elate judge, one commissioner, and the
jury commissioner. From this It can be
seen that no effort Is made to particularly
centre the ofllces of Ihe party to one sec
Hon of the county more than another, and
all this kicking and growling about the
geographical situation should be slopped.
It is tiresome.
SilUicics are not tilings that working-
men should rush heedlessly Into, for they
generally enlall a great deal of -suffering
to those who are connected with them,
They should never bo used only when all
other means fall, hut they are not the tin
mitigated evil that some would have us to
believe. They seldom occur, even though
they fall In their direct object or purpose.
but they accomplish some good. They
are the earnest protest of honest labor
against tho oppression of capital, and teach
those who are tyrannically disposed that
there is a limit lo their cruel selfishness,
boundary over which they cross at peril to
their Ill-gotten wealth, and the experience
and knowledgo thus gained will often tend
to deter them from encroaching too far on
the rights of labor. It is not their appre
ciation ot those rights that prevents them
from encroaching on lliem, hut theJear of
what may follow, Hut strikes are not
always failures. Of late years they have
been otherwise, notwithstanding the as
sertions made by prejudiced writers In the
Interests of the employers.
NOTES AND OPINIONS
Civilization, says an exchange, lias made
marvelous strides. Ananias wouh'n't have
been a patch on the nineteenth century
campaign Hat's trousers.
The greatest polltlcan raising section I
Carbon only got one man on the ticket at
the Democratic convention held at Mauch
Chunk yesterday and that was Hugh Ferry,
of Audenrled. Hazletou Sentinel.
According to a judicial opinion rendered
by Judges Bucher, Mayer and Rockefeller
It Is Illegal for any Individual pr commit
tee to present to any voter a receipt for
taxes, and where it is done the gift of the
receipt does not conyey with it the light to
yote.
Another proof that cheap labor is dear
labor has been brought to light by the cen
sus Investigation. 11 appears that the aver
age cost of producing a ton of Ituii Isabout
814 In the Northern foundries and about
$10.75 In Southern tonndnes. Higher
wages aro paid In the Northern foundries,
but the labor cost per ton of metal Is $1.40
In thu North and $1.00 In the South. So
the '"cheap labor" is 20 ceuts a ton dearer
than the more coUly and efficient labor.
Here Is another proof that efficient and
well paid labor Is the cheapest. American
wages, measured by output, are not higher
than foreign wages. Phlla. Ilecord.

Tho Albany Argus of recent date says
that It Is a mistake to say that the Order

until 1824, when It assumed the pre
