I are of such frequent occurrence in Bnu around Hatleton that they aro no longer ... . ... I considered as a matter or sensational news, either by the press or people. The fre quency of these bmtal crimes finds an ex planation, no doubt, In the fact that though there are dozens of murders eyery year there are no hangings. A more stringent observ ance of the penal laws and the Hungarians will begin to understand, If not appreciate American Justice. IN A CAREFUL AND NOT UNFRIENDLY discussion of Henry George's single lax Idea the New York Times says: "Each man's contributions would be closely apportioned to his ability as an earner or a purchaser. In other werds, the tax would be 'diffused,' as all real estate taxes are, and the adjustment would bo much more nearly equitable than any artificial device could make It. Considered simply as a scheme for raising the needed public revenue the single tax idea has much to commend It." The encounters between white and colored men of the South are becoming of such frequent occurrence and of so vicious a nature as to call for some Immediate and prompt measures by the authorities to pre- vent further outbreaks. The looseness and general Inefficiency of the laws haye much to do with It It seems, and the sooner they are so modified as to conform with tho wel fare, protection and general safety of the South the better It will be, not only for that section of the country, but for the United States. For get the past and live In hoDO of the future; In anticipation of our nation's Increased greatness; In health and happiness, in pros perity and plenty. The Advocate sends gretting to everybody wl.h wish for a Happy .New Year. the earnest We are told that some months ago the Council was discussing the matter of a general reform or revision of the ordinances governing the borough. By reference to the laws tho practicability of a thorough change becomes at once apparent. Lehigh. ton has outgrown her swaddling clothes since Its Incorporation twenty years ago and now stands in tho light of a vigorous and healthy youth merelng Into manhood. The town council could do nothing more worthy of hearty commendation than to revise the borough ordinances so that they will con form with our Increased population and general growth. It embodies views on education which haye through bis addresses and papors already made an Impression on the public, as they have upon the teachers and the schools, during his service. Mr. Balllet bases education on the nature of the human mind and soul, and therefore all the work of schools assumes in his treatment a char acter of life and yalue It cannot otherwise attain. Prof. Balllet's report, like everything else he does, is clear and to the point. DEBATOH .CDUUNDS, KNOWN TO TUB reporters' galleiy as "St. Jerome" from a strange resemblance bis head bears to a popular likeness of that martyr, ls one of the acknonleged leaders of the Itepullcan organization in the Senate. S.n tlm tug or .ogle seemed to overcome, i'o the six Hebrew gentlemen seated at tho table In that humole restaurant started the Prog ress Club. " Tall trees from little acorns grow It was not long before the news got nois ed abroad that the new club was In exist ence, and applications lor membership came In rapidly. They soon found It nec essary to move to more convenient quarters. Established In a club-house of their own, ihelr membership Increased moro rapidly than It did before, and It was onlv a couple of years till they were compel! id to move again. The second move enlisted some of the wealthiest Hebrews in New York, and It was formally resolved to purchase a site In the most fashionable quarter of the city, and erect a club-house that should throw tn the shade everything In the way of clubs that we haye yet seen In New York. The hackers of the project are men whoso for tunes arc estimated with seven or eight figures; they are thoroughly In earnest In the matter, their blood ls up, and when It is completed It Is safo to say It will not be surpassed by any club-house on this side of the Atlantic or even In -Europe. The fact la that clubs are netting to be a marked feature In our social life. Forty years ago not one business man In a thousand be. longed to a club. .Now cub expenses are regarded amongst the legitimate expenses of the concern. Almost every business man you meet belongs to a club of some kind; and it ls not unusual to see the lady of the house step in amdng her husband's guests after dinner and say, "You will kindly ex. cuse me, gentlemen, we have a business meeting to-night at our club Apropos of women's clubs, tho Sorosls still holds Its own. Other clubs there are, very good of the kind; but for general high tone, excellence of entertainment, Intellec tual culture, decency, purity and thorough enjojmenl there is no club within my ken that will compare with It. It has always been fortunate In its officers, and, all re porla to the contrary notwithstanding, there are neither short-haired cranks nor women who care to weir breeches prominent a- mong Its members . No club In New York, or anywhere else, cau give such a delight ful entertainment among Its own members as the Sorosls. It has the best speakers, the wittiest story-tellers, tho most talented singers and the most skillful instrumental performers that can be found anywhere. The members aro proud and happy to en tertain each other. It ls considered quite an honor to be called on to do so talent to them costs nothing; and It Is easily In Its way the foremost flub of the kind In the country. Of course, In clubs, like seeks like, In the Union Club, which Is the swell est club In New York, there ls a strong mingling of patriotism and piety. Not that they are all saints by a long shot, but the act of your bdng the ,ns,do of tho Un Ion goes a very long way on your endorse ment for sanctity and patriotism, though I know quite a number who, If they were on the outside to-day, would find it difficult to get over the fence. There are now over a thousand applications for admission; many of them haye been waiting for years, and the chances aro that before 75 per cent of them ever tuck their legs under the ele gant tables of the reception-room or restau rant, that, encased in a very magnificent pair of golden slippers, they will be climb ing up De Golden Stairs. While the Union favors the Republican element the .Manhattan ls composed of Democrats. It professes to be quite tony too, but on Its rolls are to be found all of the Democratic politicians; gentlemen who rejoice In lucrative offices, and lucky strikers who haye fat contracts and In flucntlal political friends. At the present time tbcie Is war to the knife between our two great athletic clubs. ine Hew York and Manhattan are at swords' points, and as all of their differences are supposed to be settled in an athletic wa7' ''"A " nil of the members of each C'UD are taking lessons In boxing from an experienced tutor, I expect In the next six mouths to see a series of encounters by gentlemanly amateurs, according to the Marquis of Queensberry rules, which will rival the best efforta of tbe P. It. The rival feeling between these clubs was very bitter and Intensely personal last week, The Manhattans made a policeman put four reporters out of tbe press gallery at ifadlson Square Gardoo because they espoused the cause of .the New Torks and unmeiclfully scored tbe .Manhattans. Tbe .Manhattans had their Innings with the re- porters last week, The reporters are yet I to be heard from; when their time comes there'll be music In tbe air, Ever since the Irish team was here and were tabooed by tbe League clubs because they refused to turn their backs on the Manbattaus, the feeling has been most bit- ter. and what the outcome will be no one cau tell We are putting on a great deal of style this winter. Young men are beglnrlng to wear their hair long and hanged In front like a girl's; aud tbe ladles ah, bless me I well, to see them to advantage or dltad - vantage jou want to go to tbe Metropolitan Opera House. There you can see In Its fullest perfection what fashion calls full - dress. Mercy on us, full dress I It comes as near undress as anything I have seen since I visited tbe opera In London. As you sit in the parquette of the Metropolitan Opera House and survey tbe boxes, which are at an elevation above you sufficient to cut off tbe occupants about the armolts, you might suppose that at least one half of the audlcBoo bad xergotten to cut on their 1 clothes, and had come to the opera In tho ' 1 .. - I n , ...nil..- KWa..., -1. n knew an) thing of applet or snakes. There Is nothing of the prude about me and I don't profosa to be over nice on matters aesthetic Of otherwise) especially thoottierwiso. I have seen tnascullno and feminine beauty under all potslblo con ditions, and havo little to learn un that score. I visited Madagascar before the Christian missionaries got a foothold there and saw a delegation of over two thousand march along tho beach, where tho only con cealment of nature's charms was a necklace of shells and a ring In the nose. I have sat for hours In the l'ails Life School where the models were minus tho Qg loaf that composed mother Eve's first apron, so that an ordinary display of feroalo charms has no moro effect on mo than a wooden Indian. But I confess a modest blush mantled ray sensitive cheek as I looked around the Metropolitan boxes the other night. I realized that I was not quite as case hard ened as I thought. This sort of thing earned to Its present excess, might be borno with resignation If none but the young and beautiful Indulged tn It; but tn somo of the most fashionable boxes, you will see fat, flabby old grand, mothers sitting beside their granddaushtcrs, displaying bare arms and nocks from which all charm had departed forty years ago, and anatomical frights that remind you of Calvin Edson whom Barnum used to exhibit a quarter of a century ago as the Skclton IKonder. But clothes or no clothes, the opera Is doing a rushing busi ness, and Anton Sledel, the leader, says that New York will shortly be the musical eenter of tho world. It reads llko a story of the cowboys; two jewelers' windows smashed In one of our principal thoroughfares, and thousands of dollars worth of diamonds stolen; and a gentleman sandbagged In ouen day In a public street, and the robbers get off with his purse. People are astonished when they read of robberies In tho west or south, holding up a stage coach or a railroad train, but that is mere child's play alongside of some of these New York robberies. Mrs. Parsons, tho negro wife of iho Anarchist, arilved here this week from Europe, and the reds were going to receive her with a band of music, and make a ble time oyer her. Inspector Bjrnes refused them a permit for their procession, and at first they talked of defying the authorities and having the reception anyway; but they were given to understand, that if the undertook It, there might bo wigs on the green, so the reception was private, and she departed in peace. Tho holidays have been enlivened by revival In tho Salvation Army, caused by the arrival among us of the younger son of General Booth, commander-in-chief of the army, and brother of Ballentlno Booth, who now has charge of the United Slates con ttngent. After painting New York a bright vermilion forthree nlghls.tho Army crossed over to Brooklyn by the Big Bridge, drums beating and colors flying, and gave the ciiy of saints a roustabout. Songs, duets, quar tets, banjo solos with tambourine accom. panlment, sandwiched with an occasional handspring and jig, mado the occasion ex ceedingly pleasant, If not spiritually profit able. General Booth himself went, off In something that looked very much like a double shuffle which could scarcely be called an evidence of spiritual grace. It Is not for a poor sinner like me to call in ques tion the methods that our salvation breth- ern pursue to call reprobates like mjself o repentance; but If this ls true religion, I can only say with Watts, "God moves In a mysterious way his wonders to perform."
