FARMERS' COLUMN.
Oats and Peas.
We have for many years grown oats and
pess together. On gold, rich latnl, sown
early, you can gat a great mass ot folder
and grain. The drawback In the ilder
States is (he pea-weevil. The peas are
affected with llio "bus," and we do not
sell them, but feed them out oa tho farm to
pigs nnd sheep, principally to the hVmer
The pigs do not object to the bugs. What
the bugs think ot It Is not reported The
funning mill will separate nearly all thecals
from the peas. No matter If a lew of the
split peas will remain with the oils.
If cut before thu oats get too ripe and (he
c.rop is carefully cured, the fodder is nearly
as good as hay. Aslolha variety of pens,
sow any that you can buy cheap enough.
Ttiesrcdimen chaigeloo touch for it, or
the While or Wack-eycd Marrow fat would
be good. The common Canada Creeper ir
any other small, round pea answers a good
purpose, and a bushel goes farther than the
larger varieties. Wo mean tlnit tt Is nut
necespary tu sow them so thick. Two
bushels ufoals is enough seed per acre.
Tho marrowfats should be sown at the
raeol not less than three bushel per acre
and a bushel lo a bushel and a bulf of oats,
thoroughly mixed together.
Early powiug is vrrv desirable, and as
tod eiii bo plowed earlier iu the spring than
s:ubbto land, wo prefer la. sow on sod,
putting in the seed as fast as I lie land is
plowed. The crop tun bo drilled in or
a iwn broadcast. II a drill ts used, keep the
grain well tulxerl, or the peas will be apt to
pink to the bottom. If sown broadcast and
the laud is well plowed iu narrow furrows,
sow on the furrows before harrowing. Then
liarrjw and roll, and the peas will be well
covcrel. You can rely on that. Am.

Eowing Clover Seed.
Experience ni:d scienco are agreed In

In many cases this is dun to the difficulty
ol gutting a ''good catch." The seed falls
to gi-nuinate O cjiiooilly this is altti-
'.butabio In poor peed. It is mnch Inoro
likely, however, that the trouble is in the
toil. The longer our soils nr cultivated
and especially when little manure is ueed
T jreeu crops pb wi l under, the poorer II. e
s il becomes Iu (fjauic mitter. We tie no
-l cciul diminution in the yield of crnin
cropi. This is bec.iito we cultivate
bo'ter but at the same lime llicro "ran bo
no il,r,ubt tliat the mechanical condition nt
the soil is less favorable for tbo germination
of small seed, like clover. The soil is hard
-ind the surface less luellcw and 1ooo than
when it wns full of decaying lepvea and
o her organic matter.
When we eoiv clover and grats seed nn

Tie. are scarce and hi demnnil. and even
if lliey were not, we do not want to lose
them. If we lose a, calf wo can no the
milk of the cow, but n dead bimb or a dead
pig is a dead loss. When pig come in cold
weather, a few hours settles tho question of
life or (tenth. If the rw Is rrns. the best
wny is not tn disturb her ; but w.(h a quiet
sow, much may be done tn injure the life
of the pig.. We Lave In extremely cold
weatlier us'd rubber b ittles of hot water
with great ndvantige, or a two bushel bag
of hot chair, or cut rtraw j but our favorite
p'aii is to cover sow nnd little pigs with n
blanket. 'J bo details of the iiieUiod" will
vary aecrding lo eireiimstancis. Tli
priucipil dilllculty is, to get Ilie low to tie
down when you urc with her in Ilie pen,
ho. I lo let you put the blanket on her.
Itubhlng her tents with the band will
usually induce her to lie down, and then
you can put on the blanket and keep it on
until all tne Igs are br i and safjly mo er

believe that the value of the lit'.le pUstb
are now lost every spring iu the United
States, and which might be suyed bv a
lilll fi.r'Picli', care, and Ilie use of a lm ae
blai.k-l, w mid nmra than pay the entire
subscription lists of all our agricultural
papers. The writer ol this has a gcol
farmers' library, numbering hundreds nf
Volume', but his losses nn pigi (pure bred,
it Is true, ard sold for bio-ding), before be
adnpte I Ilie blanket, would buy such n
library twice over. Now, we rarely lose a
pig. If the pigs are alrea ly chilled, o warm
brick or a b.iltle nf hot wter, may be put
on tue s'.deof the sow under the blanket.
Thehiatof the inolher, retained bv Ilia
bl like!, will soon warm the liil'n pigs ami
they will lake Ind.) ot the teats and look as
lively and vigorous as can be desired. Of
course, 11 Is necssary lo have an eye on the
sow wlule the blanket is kept on. An hour
or ao, at a lime, is all that is needed. When
the pigs are warm and cnmforlaole, and
have bail a good supply nf warm milk, Il
blanket can be removed. Watch how
matters progress, and put it on again, if
necessary, after the tow has had her food.
