some interesting Statements respecting the
load. In the matter of feeding he says the
totd is not very particular) cither as to qual
ity or quantity. Anything that creeps or
crawls will do for him Wood lice, hectics,
spiders, slugs, worms, even snails with their
shells, are put out of sight as if by tnagic,
for he has a peculiar way of catching his
prey. lie watches the moving Insect for an
instant or two; then suddenly darting out
his" tongue while at n disUnro of one or two
Inches, the insect is snatched tip and swal
lowed Instantly. One evening he gave one
a wasp and a humble bee. Both were
snatched up directly tbey commenced to
move, apparently without causing the toad
the slightest discomforti though they must
have reached his stomach In a tolerably
active condition. In plant houses especially
forcing houses, whero insects Increase their
numbers so rapidly at all seasons, the toad's
services are especially valuable; and if a
suitable ladder, made of a narrow hoard with
bits of lath tacked on it two inches apart, be
set In a corner, slanting from tho floor to
the stage, he will climb it, and thus bo en
abled to make himself still moro useful
But perhaps the most remarkable fact con
cerning tho toad is, that though he can, and
does, eat a great deal, he can exist a long
timo without eating anything. Years ago
ho buried one lor a month In the earth, as
an experiment, and when dug up it was op
parently as well as ever. Mora recently,
having been bothcrou with myriads of wood
lice In an early cucumber house, and not be
ing nblo to find toads in February, he, later
on when they becamo plentiful, buried throe
in a nine-inch pot, with a slate on the top,
eighteen inches under the ground, that he
might have them handy for the next early
forcing season. But that season he did not
require them, so they remained buried un
til the following one, and were then, on be
ing taken up, apparently not much tho
worse for their eighteen months' fast,though
they didn't have uny ice water or alcoholic
baths.

then forces the rap or butt end of the shell
otT, and then has a chance to straighten his
neck, thereby louiening his logs somewhat
aud so by their help, furcing the body ftom

nounced by Mr. Mygett, n farmer of Napa,
Cal. For five years past he hss used it till
every vino Is freed from phylloxera, and
eyery fruit tree cleared of insect posts. lie
bores a small hole III the lower part of tbe
trunk, slightly slauting, pours in a small
quantity of quicksilver, and plugs with
putty. Sulpher has been used in the same
way with aucei3,also petrolcum,bul tbe latter
injures the trees. Mixed with castor oil,
however, petroleum is a sovereign remedy
fur scale bugs and other insects which de
stroy plants, but It should be administered
moderately.
Hydraulic cements do not shrink in
hardening and make an excellent mortar
without any admixture of sand.

most complete with firings or charges at In
tervals of from fifteen to twenty minutes.
- Be sure that the corn you plant has a
good pedigree. Tedigree In seed is of as
much importance as pedigree in horses and
cattle. Buy It from none but reliable seed
tores, though it may cost you a few cents
more a bushel) It will amount to but little
