C01U Trade.
During the last week, says Monday's
Ltiqtr iu agreement has been arrived at
atnorjg all the anthracite coal companies re
gulating the production for the entire month
of May, at the end of which It Is supposed
the restriction of production will be suffi
cient to enable full work to go on continu
ously thereafter for some considerable length
of Unto. Wo understand there Is some
blockade of coal at New York, though the
Wharves at Port Richmond are very bare
and tho Philadelphia and Reading Coal
and Iton Company lias practically no slock
of ItVd or three sizes of coal. The Now
York companies requested tho Schuyl
kill region to agree lo a suspension of llireo
days in each week for the entire month of
May, but Mr. Gowen on Thursday, In on
swer to their application, requested that full
work might be allowed to go 011 for the next
week, agreeing that If that was consented to
the receivers of his company would unite In
a suspension for three days out of each of,
.the remaining weeks of tho month of May,1
and late on Friday afternoon this arrange
ment was agreed to by Ihe New York com
panies. It is therefore understood that for
tho present waek full work will bo had,
and thereafter only half time uutil the first
day of June. Wo understand that there is
a strong probability of an advanco of prices
on the first day or June, and that arrange
ments are being made by which tho allow
ance, or 15 cents commission off circular
prices for the present month shall bo made
only to purchasers who purchase quantities
of Irom five to ten thousaud tons. The out'
look of the anthracite coal trade from this
point to the end of the year is good. Tho
Potlsvllle Miner's Journal of the 29th ulti
mo say si "The heavy buyers are slow in
their movements, purchasing only up to the
line of their actual necessities, waiting and
hoping for a break in prices, as Is their uni
form custom early in the season, especially
tyben prices are stiff. It is this action
which, while it does not change tho volume
of the trade, makes it very irregular, by
throwing much the heavier portion id the
fall months, and continuing It even in the
winter when the collieries ought to have
rest. There is not much at present upon
which to build a hope thut prices will be
any more favorable a month or three
months hence than at prese.nti indeed, the
indications ail point to higher prices. They
arc now only fairly remunerative, and have
been brought up to that point solely by last
season's judicious policy of concert of action
It Is not likely that with the bit.er experi
ence uf 1879, resulting from want of co-ope
ration, there will be a disposition to change
tllo programme this year. Tboso who are
holding oir for a break will, therefore, be
likely to discover their error when they
have to add 25 cents a ton lo the present
market price." The following is Ihe print
cd circular of April 29th, 1881, directed to
tho coal operators of Schuylkill county;
"The anthracite coal interests have agreed
to woik full time next week, and to the
stoppage of coal mining the last three days
uf each of the following weeks in May, that
s to say, stop work on May 12th, 13th, 14Mi
19th, SOth, 21st, 20th, 27th and 28th. To
fully carry out the spirit of the agreement
it is essential that the mining, hoisting,
preparation and loading of coal during
tlume days be entirely discontinued, and it
is earnestly hoped that the above agreement
for suspension will be carried out by every
one Iu perfect good laith. Ucspccliuiiy

The MxIns and Mkdiuhs Uskd to Cosvxr
Instructiuk to Infant Classes.
1. By words and language. This stands
at tho head of all plans used to convey in
struction to those who cannot read; it Is in
fact the plan of plans. The Infant class
teacher must be a ready talker; he should
be able to talk childlike, bnt not childish.
He must adapt his teaching to the capacity
f the youthful mind, and in order to do
is it is necessary fur him to choose the
plainest, tho commonest, the most Idlomat-
words. To impress the infant scholars
1th what you are saying, you must be na
tural; ayoid that whining, monotonous and
artificial way or speaking, cultivated by
solno or the would -be artificial) or the pres-
nl day. What you say should be said
ilh magnetism, and il will bo sure to
make an impression if it is worth saying.
Ayoid, also, all that is unfamiliar nad ser
monizing in language. Do nut talk much
or long at one time without frequent review
and repetition. It is not all of teaching to
talk; talking is not leaching. Never talk
for the sake of talking; if you have nothing
r interest to tell tho little ones, it Is more
prudent to stop than to keep on telling
them What tboy know as well as you do.
Speak With authority, weight and certainly
n a manner evincing love, sympathy, Com
passion and auimalion. Speak as If yuu
heartily believed all you are teaching; be
positive. Animation is especially necessa
ry; speak last, and speak with energy;
speak like little children speak. Speak in
short sentences; speak to be understood by
the smallest mind. Use only such words
and language as you would liko to have
used in teaching you, II you were an infant
scholar. To be continued in our next.
