Hon. W. M. Ripshcr, of this borough, in
tho House of Representatives, on tho Oth
Inst, paid tho following eloquent tribute to
the memory of tho late Hon. David II.
Jones, of Blair county, Pa. :
Mr. Sneaker, since this House of Repre
sentatives adjourned on tho 23d day of
March, 1877leath,that enemy nf the human,
race, "that awful gulf, no mortal e'er repass-e-.l,"
has opened wide its portals and engulfed
one of our members.
The honorablegentleman.David M. Jones,
one of the members of this House, from the
county of Blair, has passed through the dai k
valley of the shadow of death never to re
turn, "To tell what's doing on the other
side."
It was tho inexorable will of that Higher
Power, which so frequently manifests itclf
in nature, that again triumphed over the
feeble and transient powers of mortal man
and deprived us of an endeared friend and n
valued member of tin's body. I had the
pleasure of an intimate acquaintance witli
tin deceased durins tbo session of 1877, and
I was forcibly impressed with tho belief that
his vital powers were then rapidly passing
ait-ay. I can freely say that I never knew
a man who practically exemplified more
riblimity in hope, courage and bravery than
our deeeaseil friend ami member did in that
lonz hopeless, gloomy and uneven struggle
with that ghuitly and unrelcntless foo of
mankind consumption, which had fastened
its icy old clutches with such a dcaillv grasp
npon his vitals, and like the vnmnlro was
slowly but surely drinking bis life blood.
I am informed that this sublime hope and
courage never failed him during all the
tedious and trying days, nights, weeks anil
months of suffering through which ho
valiantly struggled with that terrible foo in
tlat unequal contest.
Sucii hope, bravery and self-reliant in
such an emergency, and in such an ago of
emotional, artificial and sentimental ten
dencies, are truly noble nud worthy to be
hold. I cannot help but say this, because
iu my brief intercourse with him, ho forcibly
impressed me with it.
Thcso are virtues and manly qualities
worthy of emulation. Yv'e deenlv mourn
thol6js. Ho was a man of robust virtues,
nnd hisloas will bo keenly felt. Wo will
miss an esteomed and honored member, the
pablic a useful servant and his constituents
an hone.it and faithful reurescntalive.
At home ho was honored ond rospected,

Ho was also taken a prisoner ofwarnttho
battle of Clinncellorsville. Such sacrifices
as thc3e are tho greatest that tho citizen and
patriot can ofl'or to his country. It is stuk
liig life and all.
In the month of July last, ho started for

nnd hopes for an Improvement of his health.

A novel feature of tho doings at the Cap!
