    AM ACT
To Facilitate tiie Collection of Taxes in tiie Counties of
Caiibon and Luzerne.
Section 1. Do It enacted by tho Sunato and House of Representatives of the Com
monwealth of Pennsylvania, Id General Assembly mat, and It Is hereby enacted by
tlia authority of the same : That the collectors of all taxes which may1 be levied In the
counties of Carbon ami Luzerne, shall wlt!iln thirty days after the receipt of their du
plicates, give notice by not less thai six written or printed handbills, posted In con
spicuous places In their respective boroughs, townships or districts, that payment of
the taxes contained In their duplicates, will be required within a certain tlina from
the posting of such notices, not less than thirty days thereafter.
Sgctioh 2. That after tho expiration of thf time mentioned In such' notice, It shall
be lawful for the collectors, In addition to the methods provided by existing laws for

overy person, firm or corpoiatlon, whom, or

payer or taxpayers named In his duplicate or duplicates, or the supplements thereto,
which list or notlco shall cou tain tho namcjind occupation of such taxpayer or tax
payers, and the amount of the taxes due and unpaid by him or them ; and the person,
linn or corporation so notified, shall from time to time within six months after re
ceiving such list or notice, pay to the collector the whole amount of taxes charged In
such notice, except as hereinafter provided, taking his, the collector's receipt, for the
several Items In euch list or notice, in tho name of the taxpayer, which receipt shall
be a sufficient voucher for the person, firm or corporation so notlQed lu settlement of
his account with the taxpayer, and shall, upon such settlement, by euch person, firm
or corporation, be delivered to the taxpayer. Provided, That the person, firm or cor
poratlon shall be released from the payment of any tax contained in such list or no
tice at tho expiration of six months from the date of the receipt of the same by due
proof, by affidavit or affirmation of himself, or the clerk or bookkeeper of such firm
or corporation, or by other evidence satisfactory to the collector, that said tax had
been paid by the taxpayer to the collector after the receipt of said list or notice, or
that he or they were not at any time after the receipt of said list or notice Indebted
to the taxpayer an amount equal to bis tax, or that having been so Indebted, the tax
payer was in such indlgeut circumstances ns to entitle lilm to exoneration from the
payment of his tax. Provided further, That nothing herein contained shall In any
manner Interfere with the rights of any taxpayer by application to the proper author
ities to procure exoneration tor mistakes, Indigence or other lawful cause.
Section S. That unon the payment of the amount of such list or notice, or such
portion of the same as the said person, firm

for any default of payment by said person, firm or corporation of the amount so col
lected or retained by him, or them, tho collector shall have the same process as he

Sectiok 4. That overy collector who shall
the lists or notices aforesaid, within tbe time
shall bo charged upon settlement of ms duplicate with an taxes, vtliicu, in tho opin
ion of the authorities bv whom the duplicate was Issued, could have been collected
If such lists or notices had been delivered ; and nothing in this act contained shall be
so construed as to prevent any tazpayer whose name may be contained In any such

convenient after the receipt of any tax contained In any such list or notice, notify the
person, firm or corporation holding such list or notice of the payment thereof, nor

lecting any tax included In any such list or notice by distraint or other process pro
vided by existing laws.
Section 5. That all acts or parts of acts
