MR. DATTON'S HOUSEKEEPER.
"Wanted A housekeeper. No
ono but an elderly perMia, competent,
and ot the hlehest respectability need
apply. Call between tbe hours ot thtee
and (our, Thursday, April sixth, at
No. Michigan Avenue."
Kate Franklin read this In the paper
wbl' h lay on the counter In tbe little
grocery while waiting to have an ounce
or two ot lea done up, and a roll ot
baker's bread.
She repented the number of tbe
house over to herself, as she received
the' change from tbe grocer.
She prepared the lea after she return
ed to the li.tle bare aula, and ate her
scanty mal mechanically. She forgot
how unsatisfied her appetite still waa,
In her busy thought.
A stranger In a strange place, suc
cessively she had trio I to find a situa
tion as a teacher, copyist, In a store,
sewing. She had failed on tbe first
three, and was starving on the last.
She would apply for the place, but
she would need references. Qnly one
person she knew In the whole great
city, of sufficient Influence Mrs.
Davenport, the rich, haughty step-sister
who had il I treated Iter gentle mother
while she lived, and had hated Kate
herself. Perhaps, Kate thought, she
would permit me to refer to her, be
cause glad to have ber descend to
menial employment.
Kate was competent for the situation,
for during her mother's long lllneas.aud
durlus her father's absence, she had
tho entire charge of their large family
and splendid house.
But, an "elderly woman." Now
Kate was not an elderly woman, being
only twenty ; but she remembered,
with a sort ot pleasure, that in private
theatricals In happier days, she had Im
itated the voice, and assumed the char
acter of an old woman with great suc
cess. She knew how to stain the skin
to give an old and wrinkled appearance,
and sh'e had iu the bottom of a box,
some false gray hair and a musllu cap
worn on one of these occftsslon?.- She
did not need to look so very old only
to present a mature aud matronly ap
pearance. Mr. Edwatd Dayton waited at home
after dinner to see the respondents to
his advertisement. He was a hand'
some man, not yet thirty, with a gay,
frank, good-natured countenance.
Be leAiied back in a nonchalant
way, with his feet oo another chair.
" There ought to be a Jrs. Dayton
o manage these housekeeping matters.
Well, there's time enough."
Two applicants were seen and dis
missed In Mr. Dayton's gentlemanly
way.
A third was ushered in. Mr. Dayton
Instinctively laid aside bis cigar, and
placed a chair for his visitor.
The ladyllkeness and propriety of her
manner pleased him at once. "Fallen
fortunes," he commenced to himself.
Sho answered his questions readily,
but In a few words.
"A silent woman a gooJ thing,''
was bis Inward reirark.
" I think you will suit roe, Mrs. ,
what may I understand your name ?"
"Franklin."
" Mrs. Franklin, you will be requir
ed to 9 out of town, about seven miles,
to uiv country house. Oak Grove In

She answered, quietly, that they did.
" Then it Is all settled, lly the way,
I suppose you have references, though
that is a mere matter ot form."
The name of Davenport was given.
" Davenport V Robert Davenport 7
I know them. All right. If conveni
ent, you will go to-morrow.ATrs. Frank
lin, or the next day. I shall not come
till the middle of uext week, and prob
ably bring a friend or two with me.
Have tbe chambers In the centre aud
wings prepared, if you please. Tbe
housekeeper there now will not leave
until Saturday. Sbe will show you
round."
" Is Mrs. Is your wife there, or to
go soon ?"
lie laughed
" Mrs. Edward Dayton ? No, she
Is not there, aud I do not know of her
going at present." Adding more seri
ously, "I hare not the pleasure, Mrs".
Franklin, of having; a wife ;" with a
slight stress on " pleasure."
A vivid color caiuo to the brown
cheek of the housekeeper, and her man
ner showed evident embarrassment.
" I thought I believe I cannot"
and stopped.
He did not notice it. His mind bad
turned to other things.
' It's all settled, I believe. By the
way," bis eye falling on tbe rusty
black dre s, "you may like an advance
as an evidence of the bargain. It Is
quite customary, I believe, to do so."
The housekeeper's hand closed on the
liltwi dollars that he gaye ber ; and
the words elie would have said vrern
left unuttered. She moved to the
door. He opened It for h:r courteous
ly' " Good morning, madam."
' Good morning," she replied.
"I cannot starve. muxt go. I can
beep up my disguise," she murmured.
Mr. Dayton, accompanied by a
friend, arrived at his country basse the
ensuing week. Everything within and
about tbe bouse was In pt-rfeet order.
If the new 'housekeeper had made a
fear mistakes at first, they were soon
roctlSed. Every room she bad touch
ed thuwed a magical change.
Tier predecessor bad 0n one of tbe
kind who believed In the sunlight nev
er entering a room for fear of fading
the carpets. '
Ut. Dayton felt the change without
knowing the reason of it. He looked
around him with a satisfied air.
It was not possible to find fault with
the variety and quality of the food
filaced before them, nor the manner ot
ts being served ; and the table appoint
ments wete perfect ; and Dayton con
gratulated himself upon having secured
such a jewel of a housekeeper.
The week passed, and a holiday came.
Mr, Dayton had gone to town the day
previous to remalu the rest of the week.
The housekeeper had given permission
to the servants to go also. She felt
welcome relief to have the house and
tho day to herself. She locked the
doors carefully alter the last servant.
She would make the most of the day.
She would' make no dinner, only a
lunch. Sho had almost forgotten her
real character In that which sho had
assumed ; but to day' she could be her
self without fear of Intrusion or dis
covery. She laid aBtdaher cap and( gray tres
ses, washed tko stain from ber .skin,
and arranged her luxuriant hair in be
coming curls, and donned a' pretty,
fresh muslin, which fitted, well the
slight, graceful figure. This done, she
entered the parlor and stood before the
mirror, as attractlvo a figure as one
would often see.
Truly I have forgotten my own
looks I I am Kate Franklin after all I"
laughed she.
Removed from tbe long restralr.t,her
spirits rebounded. She felt gay, light
hearted, and like committing any fool
ishness. " Miss Franklin," said she, in tbe
mincing, affected tones of an exquisite,
" It would be Inexpressible pleasure to
hear the music of that long silent voice.'
" It would be a great pity to deprive
vnn nf It then." she answered. In her
1 natural voice, " and myself also," she
added ; and going to the piano she
opened It anil played a few pieces with'
exquisite taste and skill, and then sho
sang song after song, In a sweet, dear,
cultivated voice. She chose at first tho
brilliant and triumphant, then the sad
aud plaintive succeeded. There were
tears In her eyes when she rose. Rut
to-day her moods were capricious.
" Mrs. Franklin, who Is playing the
piano?" she asked, in excellent imita
tion of Mr. Dayton's voice.
" It Is only I, sir, dusting tbe keys.
They need dusting so often," she re
plied. In Mrs. Franklin's mature tones:
and she dusted them vigorously with
her p(ket handkerchief.
" Ah, roe," she said. " Now what
other foolish thing shall I do to prove
to myself that I am not an elderly
housekeeper, but a young lady, who,
by virtue of her age, should be gay, by
1 right ot birth, wealthy, and of consid
eration, visited and visiting, as Mr.
Dayton's lady visits and Is ylsited. He
' Is noble, good and hnndsnmn'sbe Bald
I with a ftlgb. ' She will be happy now
gracefully she danced at tbe party tho
other evenlng.when the old housekeep
er was permitted to look on. She looks
good and amiable, too. Mr. Dayton
danced with her three times. I won
der If I have forgotten bow to dance?"
and humming an air she floated grace
fully about the room.
She stopped, breathless, her cheeks
brilliant from tbe exercise, her splendid
hair disarranged.
" I believe 1 feel like stiff, old Mrs.
Franklin, with whom dauclog dosen't
agiee."
" Ono more song by that heavenly
voice, Miss Franklin, and I shall go
away dreaming I have heard angels
sing," In the ludicrously affected voice
she bad before Imitated
" Ah," she laughed, yet half sadly,
"the compliments poor old housekeoper
Franklin receive. I hope won't spoil
her, and turn her silly old head."
She sat down again at the piano, and
sang " Home, Sweet Home;" tlten
played one of Beethoven's grandest,
most solemn pieces.
She rose and closed the piano.
The carulval'is ended. Kale Frank
lin disappears from the scene, and
Madam Finnklln enters.
Nei'her Mr. .Dayton nor the servants
would bave suspected, from the placid
and dignified deportment of the house
keeper when they returned at evening,
ot what strange freaks she had been
gallty.
The housekeeper, as usual when Mr.
Dayton was alone, sat at tbe table. It
had commenced to rain violently, and
the weather had grown suddenly cold.
Mr. Dayton, as he had done occa
slonallv. Invited her to the library,
where a cheerful fire burned In the
grate. He read the letters and the
papers which he Lad brought with him
from town, while she knitted.
An hour or more passed in sllenco ;
Indeed, the housekeeper seldom spoke
except when asked a question. At
length Mr. Dayton looked up at her,
and said, abt upty :
" Yours must be a lonely life, Mad
am. If It h not a painful subject, may
I ask how long since you lost your bus
band?"
Two bands suspended their employ
ment, two eyes looked up at hi in with
au alarmed expression. In bis serious,
sympathetle countenance there was
nothing to frelghten or embarrass, bat
tbe red grew deeper on her brown
cheeks,
" It Is a painful subjtet," she said at
last, faltering. " If you will please, ex
cuse uie."
One morning he was speakiug of the
great Joss to children la being deprived
of their parents.
