THE PIIIST KISS.
now dollclous is tho winning
Of a kiss at love's beginning.
When two mutual hearts are slghinir
For the knot theie's no untying I
Yot remember 'midst your wooing,
Lovo has bliss, but love has ruing ;
Other smiles may mako you fickle,
Tears lor other ihnruis may trickle
Love he comes, and love he tarries,
Jtut as fato or fancy cariles
Longest ctavs when sorest chldcn,
Laughs and lUes when pressed ami bidden.
Bind the soa to slumber stilly,
Rind Its odor to thellly.
Bind tho aspen ne'er to quiver
Then bind Love to last forovcr 1
Love's a fire that noods renewal
Oriresh beauty tor its fuel;
Love's wing moults when caged and capturod-
Only freo ho aoara enraptured.
The Strange Prophecy.
They were two stalwart whaling cap.
tains- Barker and Stephens. I thould
say that tho former was six feet six in
ches In helfiht, while tho latter lacked
no more than two Inches of. reacnlng
the samo altitude. As those tall skip'
pers stepped on board of our ship, when
wo were trylng-ouUblubher on the coast
of Japan, they reminded mo of Cooper
and Conway on tho boards of tho old
Park Theatre.the former as Hrutu3,and
the latter as Marc Autony, lu tho play
of " Julius Cjosar."
These two captains wero slender and
straight and moved as If they wero
rather proud of over-topping our Cap
tain, who, though a man of modlum
size, looked qulto diminutive when con
trasted with his lofty visitors.
It lias been, said that large and power
ful men are good natured. Such b not
always the case. We had a man on
board tho frigate Guerrleru named John
Mncauley, who was nearly seven feet
iu height, ami who would never attack
but one man on board tho ship whoso
name It Is not necessary to mention
who was nearly as tall and much
stouter than himself ; while on the other
hand, this man would tly at little fel
lows and give them a druhbllug when
thoy offended him.
Tho two gigantic whaling captains
resembled the latter more that they did
Macanley. On a previous voyage they
had ill'treattd a poor, friendless boy
nearly killing him, for which they had
to pay heavy expenses on their ship's
return to port. At that tlrno Stephens
was capttln and barker was his ruato.
But oi.e would hardly have suspected
them of being such cruel fellows when
they caioo on boird of us. They wero
very smiling and pleasant, and Joked
with our captain and mates, and even
looked kindly upon our crew.
Their two ships sailed In company
with ours a few days, when wo patted
from them in a galo that Battened the
seas llko a marble ffoor. Wo saw no
more of them till we wero ou tho way
home. We bad not yet broken up and
thrown our try works overboard, as wo
still hud room for a few barrels ot oil.
Wo wero runniui; down the coast,
and were near tho latitude of Lima,
when tho men aloft cried out "Sail
O I"
We soon raised the hull of the stran
ger j and the captain, after examining
her through his spy.glass, said she had
hauled her wind to fall in with us.
She proved to bo the ship commanded
by Stephens. Wo hovo aback, and tho
latter having dropped a boat in the
water, tho long whalemen's stroke soon
brought her to our side.
I was at the helm wbllo Stephens con
versed with our captain, and Listened
to a queer story told by the former In
which I took little Interest, as It then
seemed to bo of trivial Import.
Cantaln Stenhens mentioned that. Itr.
Ing at Valparaiso, ho and a filend paid
a visit to the city of Santiago. On their
return his companion, who was an old
resident of Chill, told him they were
uot lar from the abode of an aged Scotch
woman, who bad lived forty years In a
deep gorge of the mountains, and who
was supposed by tho natives to bo a
witch.
Captain Stephens, being a merry vein,
proposed that they should call and see
her. Ills fellow-traveler told him It
was lmpossiblo to Hud her as her hut
was completely hidden imong tho rocks
and exuberant foliage.
Stephens replied no doubt tho natives
knew wbero she lived j and Anally thoy
i.ave a ragged cholar a dollar to pilot
them to the witch's eyrie. They found
the place and the witch was at home.
She was a very old woman, wrinkled
and shrunken almost llko a mummy,
and was nearly deaf. She did not seem
plessed by the euteranco of her visitors,
though the tall form of tho whaling cap
tain at once arrested her attention.
Stephens insisted that she should iell
his fortune. She refused to do anything
of the kind, averrlnjj that she was no
fortuno-toller, but cn honest woman
who minded lier own business, though
sho knew that many lies had been told
about her.
When, however, tbo captain pullod
out a gold coin and offered It to her.Bho
exhibited a more tractable disposition j
but still, she fought shy, and It was not
until the money had ben given her
that sho fixed her small groeu e'tea ou
the face ot Captain Stephens arid said
" You will bo shorter before you are
longer."
"That's no foilune-tfilllncf." aald
Stephens "come, tell ma something
more than that."
" It Is tnouyb for you, ' replied the
hag ; " go a9-thaf your fortune.
Yuu will bo shorter than you are now
buforo ycu will bo longer."
" All that I could do, "added Captain
Stf phens, " I could not persuade the
old witch to explain hcrsclt or to tell
auythtng raoro."
" And what more did you want of the
old fool ?" demanded the coptaln. " Of
course It's all nonsense You and I,
Captain Stephens, aro not a couple ot
silly girls to believe in the slang of that
,klnd of people."
Our captain then Invited Gtophens to
go below with him, and soou the jing
ling of glasses and uproarious laughter
annnnnced that the two skippers wero
enjoying themselves,
Their merriment was of short dura
tion, however, for Just as a hand camo
aft to rellovo mo from tho lielm, tho
man at tho mast head cried;
" There she breaches I"
" Where away i" demanded our little
mato as ho scrambled up the malu rig
ging. "Four points on tho lee bow," was
the reply.
"Ah? that's Just whero wo want
'em. Keep her off, you at tho helm.
There, that'll do. Steady as sho goes.
A pull on the weather bracoi, here."
By tills time the two captains wore
on deck, and running forward, they dis
cerned the low, bushy spout of sperm
whales right ahead.
Captain Stephens signaled to his ship,
and a boat came for him, already equip
ped aud manned for acttou. Ho sprang
into her and dashed forward towaidtbo
school.
Our boats wero down In a trice j the
shlpkccper received his orders, and half
a dozen gayly painted, clinker built
shells rose and fell on tho billows, wbllo
tho whales wero all around us.
I was at tho tub-oar ln tho captain's
boat, and distinctly heaid Capt. Steph
ens call out to our captain:
"Jkt you an ounce I kill tho first
whale."
In the next moment I heard a hoarse
cry as of a number of voices, and look
ing in the direction whence it came, I
saw all three boats of tho other ship ly
ing on their oars, wbllo tho crew ot
tho captain's boat wero bending over
something in the bottom of It.
Our captain looked very gravo, and
worked nls steerlng-oar till our boat
headed for that of Captain Stephens.
When wo reached tho latter a horrlblo
sight met our gazo. Tho headless trunk
ot Stephons lay ln tho bottom of bis
boat, and tho blood spurted In torrents
from the arteries and jugular vein.
It'appeared that tho mate's boat had
been nearly abreast that of his captain.
A young hull whalo had comq up sud-
denly ahead of tho mate's boat. Tho
boatsteerer darted both Irons, and just
grazed tho whalo, which whirled about
and with a horizontal stroko of Its flukes
took oil tho head ot Captain Stephens.
The gory head was thus driven forci
bly tn ward the mate's boat, and struck
tho mate on tho breast, knocking him
overboard, He was not so much hurt
but that ho quickly regained bis place
lu tho boat; but bo looked very pale
and much agitated when hp joined the
cluster of boats that gathered around
the scene ot blood and (.laughter.
As I looked upon the body ot C'aot.
Stephens, divested of Its head, I felt a
sudden shock as tho words ot tho old
witch rccuired to mo :
" You will be shorter beforo""you aro
longer."
Tho prophecy had been terribly ful
filled and yet It was a safu one, tor
there was no Imacluable Drocess. now
that tho rack Is no longer In use, by which
Stephens could bo luado longer, while
there wero many ways by which he
uiigiit imvo oeen mauo snorter.
Even If a man lives to old aco ho be
comes a little shorter than bo was In
his prime. It may thereforo be doubt
ed whether the witch really gave any
tangible meaning to her words. How
couiti stio havo conjectured that Capt.
Stevens would havo his head knocked
oil by tho flukes ot a whale ?
Slowly and sadly wo returned to tho
6hlp, while tho whales, blowing furious,
ly, went off to windward llko a routed
tquadrou of Arabs.
Both ships went Into Cailao, where
the decapitated commander was burled
with the usual rites, .after which our
captain sat down to tho melancholy
duty of Informing tho wife and child
ren of tho departed, ot tho catastrophe
that had deprived them of their best
friend.
