Mrs. Ann Carroll FiUhugh Smith,
tho widow of tlio lato Gorrlt Smitlylled
nt retcrboro', on Saturday, surround
ed by her Children, grandchildren, and
other relatives. It will bo remembered
that In December last Mrs. Smith was
spending soiuo tlrao in New York for
medical treatment, when sho was visited
by her husband to enjoy tho Christmas
holidays, who was then stricken down
with npoploxy, nnd died. About four
weeks slnco Mrs. Smith returned to
Pclerboro', with health greatly Im
proved; but tho rigorous winter cllmato
of that high tablo land proved too so
voro for her feeblo body, and after on
illness of ten days sho died of an in
flammatory complaint. Mh. Smith was
borne at Ilagerstown, In .Maryland, on
tho 11th of January, 1803, consoiuent-
ly had just passed Into her 71st year at
tho time of her death. Sho was tho
daughter of William Frltzhugh, a weal
thy citizen of that State.
A correspondent of tho Cincinnati
Commercial writing from Now York,
says: "I have gut Into tho Insldo of tho
mystery about tho calling of Dowcn as
a witness In tho Bccchcr case. It Is this:
Neither sldo wishes to cal 1 ZJowen, for
reason that both sides aro anxious to
have tho prlvllcgo of cross-examining
him. It Is on this account that tho op
posing counsel aro working sharply
against each other In regard to him.

Ills bill embraced schools, churches and
other Institutions, whilst tho law as fi

boen proposed sufficiently early lu

action. Wo havo' already a case In
point that Illustrates both theso
observations. In tho dying hours of
tho Congross, and while tho "Sundry
Civil .Bill" was being rushed through,
and when the members of both houses
wero exhausted .after ,au all-night ses
sion, a very small amendment, was
tacked upon that bill which makes a
large and Important change lu,the post
