Hut those who hold him guilty will not bo changed by It; they will hold him guilty still The practical re sult of the 6ltllng of this commltteo, so far us Mr. Rcccher Is concerned, Is that the charges against him havo failed to bo proven, and his friends adhere to him as to a slandered man who Is lno cent. It Is true a largo part of tho public aro not his friends;, but, thanks to 'tho Introduction Into his defence of thochargo of blackmail, tho opinion even of those not wholly favor able Is divided, and so Plymouth Church heartily sustains him, and ho can con tlnuo to preach. Signs of Reviving Business. There aro abundant signs every wnere that tho summor holiday Is nearly over. Railway trains havo more than their usual number of "through passengers," and thoso which have their terminal points at or near tho populous summor resorts find a great deal mote travel from thosa points then towards them. The currents of travel are alt tending either homeward or toward tho centres of business. Looking to tho reglstors of the hotols of tho atlantlo cities wo And them growing fuller, and thedlffer- enco Is made up bj thoso who are go ing back to work and business after tho 'dull season" vacation, or by thoso who are taking a look about them to fore cast tho probabilities of the "fall trado." Many business places are beginning once more to put on their business as pect. Bales, boxes and other packages aro moving about, and somu of the folks who complain occasionally of tho obstruction of tho sidewalks by mer chandise In course of transit are writ ing to tho Ledger to that offect, forget ful of tho fact that these temporary im pediments to easy passage along tho pavemenlsaronoarly always Indications of lively traffic, and are annoyances to be borno with a toleraut philosophy for the sake of trade. Our Xow York letter tells of the presence of country merchants In that city, and of tho ani mated appearance which Is being as sumed thero by some of Ihe Jobbing houses and auction rooms. Unusually largo quantities of grain and Western produce are coming eastward ovor tho Pennsylvania Railroad. Three hun dred and fifty thousand bushels were shipped to Europo from Philadelphia by tho streamersof the Pennsylvania lino during the last month; and oq one day of that month there were sixteen hun dred cars loaded with Western bread stuffs and produce on tho tracks in West Philadelphia at ono time. It theso cars had full loads, as wo presume they had, their freights wero equal to five hundred thousand bushels of grain. At ten tons to a car; their aggtega e load amounted to sixteen thousand t 'ns, or sufficient to furnish full oargoes for sixteen largo sailing ships of ono thous and tons burden each. If those six teen hundred cars had beon made up into contlnous trains, tho procession would have been nearly, If not fully, flvo miles long. This Is wlut Is meant by the "movements of the crops," which newspaper readers occasionally flndnieutloiH'd in tiro money and market reports lu thu seasons when business is resuming Its activity. There are numerous other signs that tho lethargy of the dull season Is over, and wo trust that thoy aro all tho fore runners of wholesome activity In all kinds of useful industry, manufactures, commerce and trade. Wo aro now with in a few days of the anniversary of that unfortunate September day, ono year ago, which saw tho beginning of what Is popularly termed the "panic." Slnco that time there lias been a sus pension of overtrading, or at least a great check upon that crying evil of the pat. Manufacturing of nearly all descriptions, durluj the greater part of tho past twelve mouths, has boon very far short of what it had been lu any equal period of time for nt least ten years. The only stocks which have been attempted to be kept up to the fullest measure pro the products of the farm, All others must bb pretty well rundown when measured by tho standards of a fow years ago "Tho people who for tho past year havo been wearing out and using up the old at tides thoy had on hand, trusting to tho return of better times before venturing to spend their money for something newer or more convenient or satisfactory, must havo got pretty well to tho end of their reserves of old stock, This has been a wholesome experience, bringing with it lessons of economy and utility, but still, like all other lessons and experi ences, thero comes a tlmo wlion these, liko all others, have tp be practised un der now conditions or upon new materi als and new articles, because tho old ones are no longer usable. Such drafts upon reserved resources and old stores carried on for nearly a yoar must havo left a good many gaps to fill up among the stocks of goods, wares and merchan dise that makes up the essential stock in trade for a country like ours, and tho filling up of these vacant spaces ought to set Into motion nearly all of thoso uumcrous wheels of Industry that havo been Idlo or partly Idlo slnco October a year ago. These aro soino of tho con ditions which, In tho nature of things, Indicate that thore ought to bo whole some activity In production, manufac tures, commerce, and In all that makes up a healthy "business" during tho business season, which Is now at hand. Some may think that the adoption by Congress of this or that "financial scheme" may havo a largo Iptiuonce In tho matter. Rut all such theories wo deem to bo delusive, and feel persua ded that thoso who wait for such con- tlngenencles are likely to bo disappoin ted. Phlla. Ledger, Sept. 1st. POLITICAL.
