Mr. Lyman Hakes, well known
throughout this Stateas a great criminal
lawyer, died In Wilkes Barre, Monday
morning, aged fifty-seven years. His

Chunk, nnd a brother of Hon. John
Lelscnrlnc nnd A. W. Lclsenrlnir, Esq.,
died at his residence of dropsy on Tues
day afternoon last, aged about 38 years.
Tho funeral took placo from his resi
dence on Wednesday afternoon, at two
o'clock, and was largely attended.
Bev. E. Ferrler, of tho Presbyterian
I'hurch, officiating. Mr. Lelsenrlng
lor the past two yearn had been confined
to his house nearly all the time. He at
one tlmo was ngent for the DuPont
Powder Co., nnd was ono of tho firm of

well known throughout the county, hav
ing resided here nil his life. He leaves
a widow and several children.

Mason, of your place, paid' a visit to
Mauch Chunk this week.
The steam which heats tho Mansion
House passes through more than a mile
of pipes. How is that fur high ?
On Saturday afternoon last a number
of Mauch Chunk sportsmen, In com
pany with Mr. LaFayette Lentz, took
n trip to his farm in Beaver Bun, and
amused themselves with plgeuu shoot
ing. Most of them were supplied with
tho latest patter u of breech-loading guns,
and tlility pigeons wero let loose from
a trap, one at a time, and after Hying
filteen feet away from tlieboxthey wero
open to the aim of the marksmen. Out
of the lut about half of them were killed
and a number wounded. Several very
skillful "on tho whig" shots wero made.
It seemed to be great fun for tho gun
nlsts but death to the pigeons.
Since tho L. V. B. It. reduced 10 per
cent, on the wages of their employees,
nt tho foundry of Albright & Stroll they
have been reduced 10 percent., and nt
i'alkeld & Boberts' foundry, 25 per ct.
This seems to be rather ioigh on the,
mechanics who are, as it is, only work-'
Ing short hours.
Jury Commissioners Adam Christ
man, of Peuu Forest, Charles Lentz, of
Mahoning, and Sheriff O. Breinlser,
placed Vuew selection of 500 names of
taxpayers in the wheel for 1874, and
drew the juries for the January term of
Court, which begins on Monday, Janu
ary 19th, 1874. Among the traverso
Jurors drawn from the wheel was tho
name of Lemuel de Bailey, a servant of
Major Klotz, of this borough, the llrst
colored man ever drawn on a Jury In this
county'. However wo live In a progres
sive age.
Miss Annie Kenhner died, in Mauch
Chunk, on Tuesday night, of an affec
tion of the liver, aged about 37 years.
She was a daughter of tin late John
Keuhuer, an old resident of this town.
Sho was qulto well kuown in this vicin
ity as a skillful seamstress, and of lato
years had been ailing considerably.

Mauch Chunk cemetery on Friday af
ternoon, Bev. A'oble Frame, officiating.
" Beautiful mud " has been flowing
through our htreets for the past week,
and sleighs have been assigned summer
quarters.
E. K. Stroh, Esq., has been employed
by Thomas Kemerer, Esq., tho new
Prothonutary, as his clerk, and Edgar
Twining has been appointed Deputy
Treasurer by W. E. ifevan. Both aro
good selections.
Drowned,
At 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon
last, while five little hoys skating on a
pond in Westwood, n suburb of Potls
vllle, Schuylkill county, the Ice gave
way, letting them Into the water. The
brakeman of a passing traiii went to
their rescue, nnd saved two of their
lives. Three weie drowned, Samuel
blmmons, James Flun nnd Francis
Boppert, aged respectively 0, 11 and 13
years. The father of James Finn was
drowned in the same pond six years
ago.
Mine Accident.
An accident occurred at No. 3 Slope,
of tho Honoy Brook 'Coal Co., near
Audenried, at seven o'clock on Satur
day morning of last week. Two men
were instantly killed and several others
seriously injured. The car was nbout
being let down the slope when 15 men
got in. Just at they started and got
over the tip, the staple ring broke, the
car went down about 170 yards and
landed among the skids, throwing all
out, killing Alex. Brown and John
Blchards, and thrco others have since
died from. their injuries.

succeed. It could at least do no harm.
