"LAY STILL SONNY,"
A Parkersburg paper.F.v3-s that sev
eral members of the Legislature took
the cars at Grafton, late on the eve-
_ning of the 10th ult., for Wheeling,
and among them was a Mr. G., of
seine'what - large proportions physic:o
- and a Mr. D., of proportional under
size. These two—the stalwart Mr.
G., and the
,smooth faced little Mr.
D.—took a berth together, it seems,
in a sleeping car. The little man
laid behind, and the good-natured
waggish Mr. G. before. Mr. D. soon
was sleeping and snoring furiously.
Mr. G., more restless under the legis•
lative burdens, soon arose, and was
sitting by the stove, when an elderly
lady came aboard and desired a sleep
ing berth. "All right, madam," said
Mr. G., "I took a berth with my son,
and you can occupy my place in that
berth wheie my boy is sleeping." -.--
Taking Mr. G. at his word the lady
disrobed, and laid down with the boy.
After a quiet repose of some time,
the boy began to kick around to the
annoram of the. old lady. SO, in a
maternal manner, she patted the boy
on the back and said t "Lie still,
Sonny ; Pa said I might sleep with
you." "Who are you ?" said the
Legislator—"l'm no boy I I'm a
member of the West 'Virginia Legis
lature I" It is said tbo old lady
swooped.
PALPABLE HIT,
A. friend who was present daring
the late term of the Court of Common
Pleas, in this city, relates the follow
ing amusing•ineident that took place
some days before the adjournment.
There was a trial pending before
the Court in which the plaintiff was
a white man, and the defendant a ne
gro. After the jury was full, the
Court asked if there were any'objec
tions to the jury Y Whereupon , Mr.
W., counsel for the defendant, arose
and earnestly enquired of said jury,
if there were any of them who enter
tained any prejudices against the
colored race ? There was no answer.
Thereupon Judge counsel for
the plaintiff, solemnly arose, and
with gravity and earnestness, asked
thejury, if there were any of them
who had any prejudices against the
white man ? The hit was so palpable
that both Court and spectators join
ed in a hearty laugh over a joke that
was fully equal to ono of Father
Abraham's best.—Chillicothe Adv.
z France has had sixty-seven
queens. Miserable liven they led.—
Eleven were divorced ; two execu
ted ; nine died young; seven were
widowed early ; three cruelly treat
ed ; three exiled. The rest were
either poisoned or broken hearted.
