DAWSON ' S ALE.—The following

too good to be lost, although it oc

tdWolin a hottel not many miles from
the railroad :

It was produced by the bar. tender,
creaming over the edge of—the' tum

"Thank ye," said the -recipient, as
he placed it to his rips, and said :
"This is - very fine ale—vers. Whose
is it?"
"Dawson's."
"It is Dawson's ' eh 7 W ell, give ns
another glass of it."
It was done; and -heliting'it tip' to
the light and iedking through it, the
connoisseur said :
"'Pon my work, it is superb ale--
superb I—clear as •Madeira. .I. must
have some more of that. Give me a
mug of it."
Tho mug was imrnished; btit be

A PUN THAT IS NO JOKE.
A Pren'ehman near the Canada
line, in Vermont, sold a 'horse to his
Yankee neighbor, which herecommen=
ded as being a very sound animal, in
spite of unprepossessing appearance.
To every inquiry of the buyer re
specting the-qualities of the horse,
the Frenchman gave a favorite reply,
• but alwayscommenced his common.
- dation - with the depreciatory re
mark- •
"Re's not. look ver good."
The Yankee caring little for the
looks of the horse, of which . hejudged
for himself, without the seller's assis
tance, and being fully persuaded, af
ter minute inspection, that the. beast
was worth the moderate sum risked
for 14m, made the purchase' and took
him home; A few days afterwards
be returned to the seller in high dud
geon, and declared that ho had been
cheated in the quality of the horse.
"Vat •iwele canter r said the French

"Matter I" said the Yankee, "mat
ter enough; the horse can't see; be

lißev. 'James 'Thom peon, `Rector .- of
.St. Andrew's church, preached to a
large concourse of - people on Sunday
last. This was his last sermon. in
a few weeks he will bid farewell to
his congregation, as his physician ed

exhorted his brethren and sisters,
and'after the conclusion of a. abort
prayer, took a whim to cut up some
frantic feats. lie ran up Trinity

of the proceedings a couple of boys

`"LOYAL" PARSONS.—The chureh as
:a general thing, has become an im

of the peculiar tenonts of the Aboli

ing the work which was formerly
done by the most despicable of all
politicians-=the pot house pettifog

lost its purity and became a State

of the church, and -the downfall
of the State political fabrier----
The worst enemies to their country'

in any which has gone before. The
renowned commentator, Dr. Clarke
was doubtless impressed with the
truth of this assertion when ho wrote
the following:
"He who while lie professes the re
ligion of Christ, disturbs society by
his preaching or writing, who es.
eludes from the salvation of God those
who do not conform to his religious
or political creed, never know the na
ture of the Gospel, and never felt its
power and influence."
Otr The Missouri "Legislature"
has passed a bill providing that a per
son whose husband or wile has been
engaged in rebellion against the Gov

What a saintly people those Missouri

Oily how pass a resolution instruct

celestial heaven against the same dia

The' Wit deseryedly won his bet
who, in company, when overy ono

"two half brothers, .each measuring
