I, 7th Pa. cavalry, was killed a few days ago, on the IVlarietta and Cincinnati railroad, while on his way home from Nashville, on a furlough, h v. ing re•enlisted. He was from Bethel township, this county. Isaac Hoffer, Esq., has been ap pointed a Notary Public of Lebanon - by Govetnor Curtin. As we were not present in the Court House at the reception of the 93d, and as the editor of the Courier was, we took it for granted that he reported the proceedings correctly. We were mista ken however. His favorite -National air —""Old John Brown" was not played by the Band as he stated, but what he thought was the glorification of that .old traitor was a good McClellan song. The soldiers knew what it was, and no won der it was received so.enthuslaitically. T. *er ner Co., Avon, rrem our new establish inent, which compares in beauty and con struction with any on the road. • John Meily, Esq., is the proprietor of the works.. The abuse and misrepresenta tion of an aged and upright man like Mr. Bucher by the Courier, is one of the bad characteristics introduced upon our peo ple by this civil war. Mr. Bucher's course as Commissioner, andifiis resigna tion, were in conformity to at he reli giously and conscientiously felt to be his duty. If the - Cpurier had asked any one knowing Mr. B. it would have been told so, and the abuse which does not injure Mr. B. is also of no benefit to the courier, politically or otherwise.— When he could not act with them he re signed, and there the matter should.have begl . allowed to rest—and particularly in the Ease of Mr. Bucher, when all was ac complished that . could have been de sired. Jonathan Bender, Esq., Sheriff of Lebanon County, died atter a shot ill ness, in this borough, on Monday morn frig last. Sheriff sender was elected on t.l'&lTltin Ticket in 1861, and hence his term of office would have expired next fall. Coroner, by law, acts as Sheriff in case , of a vacancy by death or other wise, until a new • Sheriff is commissioned by the Governor. Peter L. Stouchi Esq , is the Coroner of this county, and accord jng to the practice prevailing in this Com mon wealth, would be entitled to the new Commission, but we learn that it has al ready been decided that Joseph Shantz, Esq., will receive the appointment, if he 'has it not already. The Deputy Sheriff, George Houck, Esq , who has been very prompt and efficient in . the performance of his duties, is also, in this arrangement given the go-by in a very cavalierly man ner. The performances of Smith & Hayes' Troupe, in Funcles Hall, on Wed nasday and Thursday evening of last week, were better than any of the kind ever before given in Lebanon. The Mc- Clellan song by Miss. Walton brought down the house every verse, and a slight attempt to hiss met with a deserved re buke. McClellan is in the hearts of the soldiers and the people, and it cannot be Ignored or smothered. The Flour Market in Philadel phia is firmer but sales are limited. In Wheat there is no material change to no tice. Corn is firm with less offering, at $1,12. Oats are steady at 86c. weight. The demand for Beef Cattle was good; and prices firm ; Hogs and Sheep were also firmer, Dftniel Fegan, Esq , Ex-Slidnit of Lebanon county, died in Annville, on Monday, from Typhoid Fever. Mr. Fe gan was sheriff from 1856 to 1858. A NEW WINTER SPORT.—AMOng the sports on the ice at St. Louis, the Democrat of that city has the following : Some enterprising genius had placed a live duck - in et box - ,- leaving about six inches of its head and neck out, and this box was placed ip a hole cut in the ice, the upper portion, showing the ducks head, being exposed to view. He had a stick about two feet long, and charged ten cents for the privilege of throwing the stick at the duck's head—the lucky individual who struck and killed the duck, to have it as the reward of his skill. Many persons, , struck with the novelty of this trick, and not doubting that they could knock- the duck's head off in three throws, invested their money, and hundreds gathered around to witness the sport. Now the duck is one of the most artful dodgers extant, and he saved his life several hundred times by the quick. ness with which he drew in his head . at the approach of the murderous stick . The proprietor of this institution pocket ed about thirty dollars in a few hours, and when we left the stick was still whirling and the duck was saving his neck with a certainty that gave promise of a long and eventful life. Important. Legal Decision.—A case was tried in the District Court of Philadelphia last week, which is of con• siderable interest to purchase of property, inasmuch as it involves the question, who is to pay the stamp cost attending the transfer. A party had purchased a prop. erty for a certain sum of money. The deed tolbe made out to the purchaser, of course requires an internal revenue stamp, amounting in the present case to Sip. The purchaser paid the same, but arterwards brought suit against the party selling to recover it back, taking the ground that the seller of the property was bound to furnish a lull deed of the title, and the affixing of the stamp was neces sary to make the title full. Judge Shars wood, in delivering the opinion of the Court, took the ground that the custom everywhere is, for the purchaser of prop erty to pay the expenses of the transfer, and in this case, the stamp duty was but an item of such expense, and accordingly gave judgement for the plaintiff. The de cision may be considered as settling -the much agitated and important question, so constantly corning up in almost all busi ness relations as to whether the seller or the purchaser is to pay the stamp duty in transfer of property. The deC.l.sion will, we presume, hold good also in personal as well as real property, and In all kinds of personal property. Philip F. McCaully was last week awarded a contract for 250 pairs of handse wed Bootees, in Philadelphia, for the Government. We are grieved to learn that the Rev. H. S. •Miller of this place had the roofs taken off three of his tenant houses in Easton by the storm of last Sunday a week, entailing a loss of near $lOO. Private D.,S.
