The Washington Uhroniele pub lishes, an article on the robbing of boicei sent to soldiers in the Army of the Poto mac., rite ;abuse - is one of the most shameful description and should be promptly remedied. We have known recent instances in which boxes contain ing valuable clothing were known to have reached Division Headquarters, and there disappeared—leaving no trace—in fact seem to have, been deliberatly plundered at Headquarters. There should be no, plea admitted in excuse of such shameftil robbery. The lower House of Congress refused, on Wednesday last, by the deci sive vote of 26 to 73, to repeal the cam- mutation clause of the Enrollment Act, and subsequently reduced the amount from $4OO, as it was, fixed in the Senate bill, to $3OO, as in the old law. ATTEMPTS . AT - 13URG Y LAR.—On Saturday night a week, s burglarious at tempt was made by font. or five men to enter the house of Mr. Christian Hershey, in the lower end of Derry township, Dau phin county, near the Lebanon county line. The movements of the noctural in truders awakened Mr. Hershey, who pro cured a loaded gun, and would probably have killed or crippled some of the party, but owning to some derangement of the lock of the weapon it fated to discharge. The burglars, alarmed at this hostile demonstration, and fearing that Mr. Her shey, would be relnforced by: some. of his iitliehhors, proved themselves is and heat `retreat: - -'lt supposed the' aieb belong to`Libanon county. ME LATER.--_Arrest of the having been ascertained, sey,l.thefierria. burg Patriot & Union, that the 'burglars were five desperadoes who have long been a terror to the people of that vicini ty, and the Hummelstown constable fear ing t i attempt their arrest, the Chief of Police of Harrisburg, Barney Campbell, was summoned there for that purpose, and proved himself fully equal to the e mergency. The men live 'about *seven miles from the Lebanon Valley railroad, and in different localities. He visited their respective residences, accompanied by the Campbellstown constable, and of ter much difficulty and several desperate encounter's with two of the gang, made the. following , arrests : Levi C. Moyer, William Craerner, A. Brant and Benja mm Ruthrauff. Brant; who is d'kiy 9f ,powerful muscle, when first captured Made some hostile'demonstrations, but officer Campbell finally brought him to terms. The 'prisoners were all securely ironed, placed in a wagon and taken to Campbellstown. After arriving there Brant and Ruthrauff managed to remove the iron bracelets from their wrists, es caped from the house in which they were confined, and fled to the woods. This occurred at night, and notwithstanding the intense darkness and bad condition of the roads, officer Campbell started alone in pursuit, armed with no other weapon than what is known in police circles as a , •billy." Proceeding to the neighbrAbed of Braritts'hottse he concealed hiniself in the woods to await the return of the es caped prisoner. In the course of an hour he heard some person cautiously ap proaching„ and discovering it to be Brant himsei he left liis`plaee of poncealment and started on i double quick towards the_ house. The movement was obseived by Brant, who at once took to the woods, followed by Barney, and an exciting chase was the result. Accident, however, fa. vored the pursuer, for after running a short distance Brant stumbled and fell, and before he could regain his feet he was again a prisoner. Alter a brief but des. perate resistance, during the progress of which Barney was obliged to use his "billy" several times in self defence, ,ii flicting some injury upon Brant, the fel low finally surrendered, and went quietly back to Camphells'fown. The other Pris oner, Riiihraiiff, who escaped in company with Brant, was not re.captured but has knee heen delivered up by his father.— Barney 'Paid a second viSit to his house sometime during the 'nt . ght,. and on de mending adMiltariee Was refined by Ruth. raiff's wide.
