RUNAWAY AND AGGIDENT.—M, 8.
Dan Rice's Circus, which was to have showed
here a few weeks ago, met with quite ft„ Serious
accident on Sunday week, on its way from Mauch
Chunk to Berwick. In descending La hilt near
Conyngbarn, Luzerne county,. the horses of, one
of the teams became unmantigeable.and ran off,
demolishing the band wagon and killing two
horses.

ver, is unprecedentod.in the annals of the mu
sic trade in this 'country. Within- the space of
a few months, 130,000 copies of it have been sold,
and the demand is increasing instead of falling
off. The publishers and owners of the copy.
right have a music store in Brooklyn, and have
hitherto done a limited local business. But
they have, through the agency of this one sim
ple ballad, become known throughout the trade
and can command every catalogue in the country.
The song is a fortune to them. The best work
by the most famous composer of the world would
not be as profitable. The music and the words
of the ballad are not remarkable for' beauty or
originality, but the melody catches the popular

we find the following :
Major John H. Ractoh, surgeon-in Wet and
, medical director of General Augur's Corps is a
ma-tire of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and graduated
all a doctor of medicine at the 'University ofPenn
sylvania, Dr- Rauch lived for some years at';
I . B nriingtost, 'lowa, but subsequently removed to
'Chicago, where he was a professer in .the Rush
Medical College. He acted - as volunteer surgeon
on the field at the first battle of Bull Run, and is
mentioned in General Hunter's report in.high
terms. He was commissioned as brigade sur
geon Angus t 3, 1361, and has been ever since
one of the most active medical otheera in the ar
my. He was attached last year to General-Keys'
Brigade, which was subsequen tip oommanded_by
General Augur. When General Augur had coin- ,
wand at Fredericksburg Dr. Rauch was coed ieal '
director there. During the memorable Pope
campaign Dr. Rauch Was assistant medical' di.
rector of the Army of Virginia, and at' Cedar
Mountain, Bull Run, Centreville was untiring
in his exertions. When the great battles of 1
South Mountain and Antietam took place he was
ordered to General Mealellan 's army. There he •
bad the entire supervision of all the rebel wound
ed in the vicinity of Sharpshurg, some f i ft een
hundred in number, and filled that delicate and
most arduous position with prominent ability.
Before his labors in that field were fairly brought
to a close, he was ordered -to j join the Batiks ex
