Wm, M. Basstatf, Sir , write from this
Place to give you a small synopsis of my travel
to this=place. On leaving Lebanon, I arrived at
Harrisburg at l Tessin through a fine •
agriewitrtral -district. In Harrisburg I had to
wait a Aort,Ainie, for the western train for Pitts
burg. By and by the Iron horse stood ready to
take me off for thp smoky city. Off_he went with
me, passing through'the heart of the coal and
iron producing regicTh, and the grandest and
piotnresque of mountain scenery in the Keystone
State. The Logan House at Altoona. is a fine
and commodiously emastruoted building, of fine
architectural proportions. The traveler who sees
it for the first time does not fail to feel . surprise
that so suburb a house has been erected there.

,lover of nature : On leaving the. latter
,ilace I
was taken through the awesome dark tunnel.
Its total length is 3,612 feet; its width 24 feet
its height above the rail 24 feet. The depth
below the summit of the mountain 203 feet.—
The next and greatest engineering work on the
road, is the curvature (the horse-shoe bend,)
which is one of the grcates engineering triumphs
of the age. The road grades at a curve of 95
feet to the mile. From which place I was soon
taken to the smokey city, where I changed cars,
which was the only length of time I stopped in
Pittsburg. From thence I was almost in a twin
kle of an eye taken into the Buck eye State. then
on to Dayton. On which route I passed through
some fine agricultural districts on to the 3liatna
valley. The Minnie valley is one of the Emeat
agricultural sections of the country I ever saw.
There is a great quantity of Tobacco raised in
this section of the country. . •
The soil is very rich, and of a sandy nature,
all through the valley.
-Dayton is a very fine place; dfie bitildinge in it;
` , and very nicely situated on the banks of the
Miama. The City contains the finest streets I
ever saw in any City—the streets' have the ap
iiearince, in firmness and cleanliness, of a barn
floor. .
Some iarta of Ohio NT hieh have passed
through is very wet. Y have seen farms which
have the appearances of Lakes more than of
farms, partly owing to the heavy rains they have
here LtOW and have bad. ,
The wheat crap though shows to become a
promising one as far as I have come.
Yours, Truly, M. R. REAM.
Just as we go to.prekis we received
a letter from the 107th Regiment, whidh, among
other interesting information, informs us that
Lieut. John U. Bowman has resigned on account
of, ill health. We shall publish the letter in full
