SAD CALAIIIITY.—On Tuesday of last
week a large boat containing a number of officers
add, privates of the 7tith Pennsylvania Regiment,
Bohlen's German Regiment, (Barkk's Division,)
Was swamped at Castlemai's Ferry, on the 'She
nandoah Myer, and Capt. Wilson, Capt. Ward,
and 4b privates were drowned. Among the pri
vates drowned we are'pained to record a resident
of this piace—Pniseenrox IlanAlt, a member of
Bohlen's Regiment. He leaves a wife, did we
think, children. He was a German by birth,
and a atone mason by eocupation,butin . sommon
with our patriotic adopted citizens he volunteered
last-summer to:defend - the Oars and stripes against
rebellion. • .

south of Lebanon, in Cornivall township, and is

for building purposes. Mr. Farrel has expended
considerable sum of money in opening this
quarry . , and:ie it is as beautifhl, can be furnished
- cheaper, and is viatlrmore durable than any im
ported Marble, it certainly should receive more
tintiod from those requiring anything in the mar
ble line.as well as front the Public' at large. We
have seen specimens of marble froin other sec
tions in this county,-one of which, if we remem
ber light,ls from the farm of Hon. Wm. Rank
in SWatattlownship, which are as beautifiil and
compact as -adY marble in the world. But of
what rise le It In the ground. It must bibrought
out. The attention of the public must be called
td it, Or , the public will continue to go to the
quarries of Carrara, seven thousand miles, while
GI pretty and infinitely more durable article is
at their very doors. If our marble gunnies are
of any considerable extent, and Mr. Barrel tells
us that babas traced his for miles, there are for
tunes upon fortunes in them which w ill hebrought

enterprising ones of coming years.

proved an act passed by. Congress, authorizing
the Post Office Department to return all deed let
ters to their writers, *itch 'new system works

don, instead of being burned, are now carefully
