= THE CORNER. A DOWN EAST JURYMAN ["Ethan Spike'' contributes to the Port land Transcript a sketch of his experi ence as a juryman The first cases he was called to try were capital once—the erimirials being a German and a "nigger" respectively.] "Hey you formed any opinion for or agin the prisoners?" said the judge. "Not perticular agin the Jarmin," says I, "but I hate Diggers as a general princi ple, and shall go ibr hanging this here old white-wooled cuss, whether he killed Mr. Cooper or not," says I. 'Do you know the nature of an oath r clerk axed me. orter,' says T. 'l've used enough of 'em. I begun to swear when I was only about—' 'Thrill do,' says the Oak. 'You kin go hum,' says he, 'you won't be wanted in this ere case, says the clark, says he. 'What r says I, 'aink I to try this nigger at all 1' 'No,' says the clark. 'But I'm a juryman,: says I, 'and you can't hang the niggers onless I'v sot on him, says I. 'Pass on,' says the clark, speaking rath er cross. 'But,' says 1, 'you, mister, you don't mean as you say; I'm a regular juryman, you know. Drawed aout of the box by the seelick man,' says I. 'l've oilers had a hankering to hang a nigger, and now, when a merciful dispensatory seems to have provided one for me, you say I shan't sit on him! Ar this your free institutions! Is this the nineteenth century I And is this our boasted'—Here somebody hol lered 'Silence in Court' 'The Court be—!' I did'nt finish the remark, for a couple of constaples had holt of me, and in the twinkling of a bed post I was hustled down stairs into the street. 'Now, Mr. Editor, let me ask, what are we coming to, when jewrymen—legal, lawful jewrymen, kin be tossed about in this way Talk about Cancers, Mor mons, Spiritualism, free love and panics —what are they in comparison Here's a principal upsot. As an individual, per haps, I'm of no great account ; t'an't fur me to say ; but'when as an enlightened jewryman, I was tuk and carried down stairs by profane hands, Just for assertin my right to sit on a nigger—why it seem to me the pillows of society were shook ; that in my sacred person the hull State it self was, figgeratively speakin, kicked down stairs! If thar's law in the land I'll have this case brought under a writ of ha bees corpus icksnek Dicke. A HAYFIELD ANECDOTE.—An old gen• tleman who was always bragging how folks used to work in his younger days, one day challenged his two sons to pitch on a load of hay as fast as he could load it. The challenge was accepted and the hay wagon driven round and the trial commenced. For some time the old man held his own creditably, calling out— " More hay ! more hay Thicker and aster it came. The old man was nearly covered ; still he kept cry ing-- "More hay! more hay 1" , At length, struggling to keep on the top of the disordered and ill arranged heap, it began first to roll, then to slide, and at last off it went from the wagon, and the old man with it. "What are you down here for?" cried the boys. "I came down after hay," answered the old man, stoutly. THE AWFUL BENEDICTION. The Saviour demanded his disciples to return good for evil, assuring 'them that by such a course they would heap coals of fire on the heads of their enemies.— The following historical incident may be considered an illustration of that policy : General Steenbock commanded the Swedish army, which in 1713 reduced the city of Altona to ashes. In order to a vert this calamity from the city, a depu tation was sent to the General, at the head of which was seen the Lutheran minister, John Came, who on appearing before Steenbock, went down on his knees, and for the sake of Jesus' wounds sued for mercy in behalf of the city. Spurning the clergyman away, he exclaimed : 'Tor the sake of the wounds of Jesus, the Rus sians gave no quarter to a single Swede !" Sasse,.however, determined not to be re pulsed, endeavored, at the last interview to prevail upon the enraged General to adopt more pacific principles But all his prayers and intercessions proved unavail ing. Steenbock pleading that he was act ing under orders from his superiors, Sas se said, in a firm tone of voice : "If that be the case, if you must apply the torch to the ill-fated city, according to the command of your superiors, while yourself are innocent ofthe dreadful deed, take hence with you, upon your con science, blessing of that Lord, who will one day be the judge of us all !" and with that, he blessed the General in fhat awful hour, with that well known benediction : "The Lord bless thee and keep thee." &c. Steenbock trembled and quivered un der this benediction : yet, notwithstanding, he executed his horrible design. But from that very hour, like General Tiny, (who during the thirty years' war had laid waste the city of Magdeburg, with inhuman cruelty,) nothing but misfortunes befell him, and the closelof the Swedish war in Germany saw, their General ground his arms, and surrender himself with his whole army prisoners of war to Danes, near Tonningen. Some time af ter, Steenbock himself died in prison. On his dying couch, he said to the clergyman who adminfstered the sacrament to him: "No cursepof all those with whom I have waged war, rests with such weight upon my soul as the benediction of that minis ter; it will , continue to torture me, even in my dying moments, for It proved to me the source of dreadful consequences." The most dreadfully savage contrivance upon the Western gunboats, now ready for operations on the Mississippi, is that to prevent boarding. Each boat is sup plied with a number of large hose pipes for throwing hot Water from the boilers, with a force of two hundred pounds pres sure to the square inch. Any human be ing who will encounter this terrible stream of hot water will be boiled in an instant. OZ," The federal troops opposite Ilan. per's Ferry, after being annoyed for a long time by firing from concealed ene mies, and by the violation=ofa flag of truce, have shelled and burned' the lower part of the town.
