ATTEMPT OF A NEGRO TO COMMIT A RAPE
'ON A WHITE GIRL—THE NEGRO HUNG EY
THE Cmzess —The Elkton (Md ) Whig
of Sept. 28, says :—A negro man, the pro
• erty of Capt. Pearce, residing in Elkton,
attempted to commit a rape on a young
lady, the daughter ofJohn V. Price, ofCe
cilton, on Thursday last. The young la
dy was out riling, and arriving at a set of
bars where thr. negro was, she requested
him to lay them down, when he seized
and dragged her from the horse. The
young girl fought bravely, and bit the ne
.gro'sfinger in her efforts to resist The
exact manner of the rescue we were not
able to ascertain, but the citizens of Cecil
ton seized the miscreant and hanged him
on the nearest tree.
EARTHQUAKES, AND GOLD ACCOUNTED
• FoR.—A paper, on "subterranean move
ments," by Professor Vaughan, of Cincin
nati, was read before the British Associa
tion for the Advancement of Science, at
.its last meeting. The Professor stated
that the amount of heat supposed to have
escaped from our planet during the past
aged called into existence greater forces
••than those indicated by the upliehval of
our mountain ranges or the existence of
•earthquakes. The solidfying of the ,igne
ous rocks from a fluid state would neces
sarily produce paroxysms, and, being de
pendent on gases for stahility, the Earth's
crust would in different parts extend a
depth into the lava proportionate to, the
elevation on the surface. lnmualities in
the crust of the globe. as indicated by lo
cal forces of gravity, and disturbences of
the pendulum, showed that the - inner side
was irregular. that our continents rest
on the bases of subterranean mountains.'
whose tops might be depressed three or
four hundred miles beneath the level of the
rectified matter. As the solid matter on
the internal mountains mast ultimately be
crushed by the extreme pressure, a mighty
avalanche of rock would continually tum
ble on the thinner part of the Earth's crust,
which would be imperceptible on moun
tains and continents, but on adjacent
coasts and islands would produce earth
quakes. This movement probably brings
the heavy metals from the central to - the,
superficial parts of the Earth, anti aecounta
tin -some measure for the general appear
.ance of gold in quartz rocks.
"Swsan - Hos xsoLET Hot Go.r—The
'best piece of satire upon the leniency ob . -
served by the authorities, in reference to.
rebels found committing depredations, is
in the shape of a story which is told, we
believe, by Gov. Pierpont. As the story
goes, some of the soldeirs in General Cox'S,
Camp, down in Kanav, ha, recently caught
• a large Rattlesnake. The snake maifest
.ed a most mischievous disposition, snap
ping and thrusting out its forked tongue
at all who came near it The boys at
last got tired of the reptile, and as nobody
wanted such a dangerous cornpenion, the
question arose, "what shall we do with
him r This question was propounded
several times without an answer, when a
halt drunken soldier, who was lying near
upon.his back, rolling over upon his side,
and relieved his companions by quietly
.remarking; "Swear him and let him go."
BREAD FOR THE Arow.--The national
army on the Potomac is well supplied with
'bread. A person who lately visited the
army baking establishments, says that the
troops are supplied daily "with about one
hundred and fifty thousand loaves of soft,
sweet bread, and all of beautiful qualit.
.besides crackers or heard bread in consid
erable amount. The entire consumption
of flotir each day, in bread and crackers,
is about nine hundred barrels,"

CATHARTIC
Are you sick, feeble, and
complaining? ~ 'Ardyeu out of
order,. with your. 'System de
ranged, and youi feelings un
comfortable? These symp.
toms are often the prelude to
serious illness. Some lit of
sickness is creeping upon you,
and should be • averted by a
timely use of the right rem
edy. Take Ayer's • Pills, and
cleanse out the disordered hu
mors-; purify the blood, and
let the fluids stove on Intob
eructed in health again.
They stimulate the flinctions
of the body into vigorous am
tivlty, purity the system from
the obstructions which make
disease. A cold settles somewhere in the bodyi and ob
structs its natural functions. These, if not relieved,
react upon themselves and the surrounding organs, pre.,
doting general aggravation, suffering, and disease:
While in this condition, oppressed by the derangement*,
take Ayer's Pills, and see how directly they restore the
natural action of the system, and with it the buoyant.
feeling of health again. What is true and so apparent in,
this trivial and common complaint, Is also true in many
of the deep-seated and dangerous distempers. The same
purgative effect expels them. Caused by similar obstrao ,
tionsm.nd derangements of the natural furetions of the
body, they are rapidly, and many of them .surely, cured
by the same means. None who Iszow the virtues of those
Pills, will neglect to employ them when suffering from
the disorders they cure.
