HOME AFFAIRS.
The official returns of the election
in this county do not vary materially from our re
port of last week. The Democratic and Union
Republican candidates are elected by majorities
ranging from over 600 to near 1200. It is pro.
dent as well as graceful to be modest in the hoer
of victory, hence we refrain from enlarging' on
this subject st present. -

OR. Colonel Christian Gloim, formerly a res
ident of this city, and Sheriff of "napkin county,
died in St. Louis, on the 23d of Ireptember, in the
82d year of his age. Ile . was a soldier in the" war
of 1312, and for his gallantservice at the battle
of Baltimore, was Made a Paymaster in the U.
S. army, but gave up that position for the more
congenial business - 'of civil pursuits. The St.
Louis precis speak very highly of Col. Gleim, as
a useful and enterprising citizen, and a most ex
emplary man in all his relations. His last illness
was -severe and protracted, but at the close, his
life passed serenely and softly away, a fitting
conclusion to an early career of singular purity
and goodness.—Rarrisburg Telegraph.
Mr. Gleim was an uncle to Messrs.
Joseph, and George Gleim, of this borough.
Lieut. John P. Ely, 19th Infantry,
U. S. A., passed through this place, last week,
having in chnrgs 14 secession prisoners, destined
(or Fort Hamilton, New York Boy.
STOCKINGS FOR THE SOLDIERS.—WO
have been requested to say to the Ladies, who
are engaged in the generous work of knitting
stockings for our soldiers, that it is desired they
should hasten their work, and send it on to Mrs
Hoffman as soon as finished. The cool weather,
and the liability of the Regiment being ordered
away at any time, renders this especially im
portant.
How co PRESERVE BEAUTY.—Nothing is more
becoming to a man or woman than a beautiful,
luxuriant head of hair, and a woman's beauty is
certainly incomplete without a fair complexion,
and be or t he who neglect! these great and im
portant adornments of nature must expect to
suffer the mortification of premature baldness,
and a wrinkled face and a sallow skin. Nothing.
is •necessary to preserve these essential attrac
tions but the use of Prof. Wood's Restorative.—
Louisville Tintee.

Pans , . WOOD'S HAIR RESTORATIVE.—We have
had occasion to use this tautens preparation of
Prof, Wood's, and after thoroughly testing its
qualities, we find that where the hair is thin it
will thicken it, if gray it will restore it to its
original color; likewise, it gives a glossy appear
ance, as well as keeps the hair from falling off.—
This invaluable ingredient is for sale at "China

THE WONDERS OF TILE MIOROSCOPR.—We un
derstand it is through the agency of this marvel
viewing instrumentlbet Dr. Ayer has at length
succeeded in finding the PALUDAL MIASM and de
termining its character. Of its effects we in this
section have abundant evidence in the Fewsat
AND AGUE which it alone produces when ah.orb
ed through the lungs into the-idea& It has
long beon.held to ben vaperor. Something in the
vapor of water from decayed and decaying veg.,
etation. Under a great magnifying power, the
Doctor has.found this vapor to contain distinct.
organisms nr living bodies, corresponding pre,
cisely with - those found in the blond of Aguesub , ;
Deets. They are 13,000 times less than visible to
the naked eye, but have distinct character and
form. lie thinks they are reproductive in decay
ing matter or in the blood, and hence there long
continued life or the remote effects of them in the
system. Ile ina!ntains that they resemble id
character the other fermentative poisons, nr such
as the virus of rabies or of a dead holly, ae., all
of which are known to reproduce them 6.lves with
great rapidity like yeast • in moistened flour, se
that the slightest quantity impregnates the whole
muss. Yeast through a powerful magnifier is
seen to be it forest-of vegetation which grows,
blossoms, mid goes to seed in a short time. Mi
asm is not itoilistinetly vegetable, but has more
the appertiimce of animal life, although its rim:
tions cannot he perfectly distinguished. What
the Doctor, claims to have-settled is that it is an
organic substance and he has further found and
embodied in his "Ague Core" what will destroy
it.—[Leader, St, Louis, Mo.

MILITARY UNIFORMS.—There le, per
haps . no department of military- business in which
there has peen amore marked improvement than in
the clothing of the soldiers. 'Not many years since
officers and:privates were clad in Raiment,/ which were
atm*. skin:tight. They wore leather stocks, which,
were Worthy of the rutme. for they kept the wearer in
tribulation; whiletheir padded breasts and Mg' t sleeves
made volition a matter of great difficulty. During the
present war '

HOSTETTER'S
STOMACH BITTERS'
The proprietors and manufacturers of HOS
TETTER'S -CELEBRATED STOMACH BID ,
TERS can appeal with perfect confidende to
physicians and citizens generally of the United
States, because the article has attained a repu
tation heretofore unknown. A few facts upon
this point will speak more powerfully than,
volumes of bare assertion or blazoning:puffery.
The consumption of Hostetter's Stomach Bit
ters. for the last year amounted to over a half--
million bottles, and from its manifest steady'
increase in times past, it is evident that during
the corning year the consumption will roach
near one million bottles. This immense swoon&
could never have been sold but for the rare
medieitialroperties contained in timprepara
tibn, and the sanction of the most prominent
physicians in those sections of the country
where the article is best known, who not only
recommend thenßitters to,t-heir ipatient,s, but
are ready at. all tirpos to give, testimonials to its'
cllivocy in all Eases pf stopiriefike derangements!
arid m
the diseases resulting therefro.
This is not a'teurporary popularity, obtained
by extraordinary efforts in the way of trum-•
Peting the qualities of the Bitters, but a solid'
estimation s of nn invaluable medicine, wbiela is.
destined to be as enduring as time itself.
Hostetter's Stomach Bitters have proved
a Godsend to regions whore fever mid ague
and 'various other bilious complaints have'
counted their victims by hundreds. To be'
able to. stone confidently that. the "Bitters"
are a certain cure for the Dyspepsia and like.
diseases, is to the proprietors a source of un-'
alloyed pleasure. It removes all morbid matter
from the stomach, purifies the blood, and'
imparts renewed vitality to the nervous system,.
giving it. that tone and energy indispen, able
for the restoration of health. It operates upon*
the stomach, liver, and other digestive organs,.
mildly but powerfully, and soon restores them
to aeoodition essential to the healthy discharge
of the functions of nature.
Elderly persons may use the Dillon daily as
per directions on the bottle, and they will find
in it a stimulant peculiarly adapted to comfort
declining years, as it. is pleasant to the palate,
invigorating to the bowels, excellent eaa tonic,
and rejuvenating generally. We have the evi- .
dence of thousands of aged men and nomerr
who have experienced the benefit of using t
preparation,while euffering from stomach de
rangements and general debility; acting undo
the advice of physicians, they have ahandonet.
all deleterious drugs and fairly tested tlti
merits of this article. A few words to the
gentler sex. There are certain periods whet .
their cares are so harassing that many of then.
sink under the trial. The relation of mothet
and child is so' absorbingly tender, that the.
mother, especially if she be young, is apt Io
forget her own health in her extreme . anxiet:
for her infant. Should the period of mat malt;
arrive during the summer season, the wear of
body and mind is generally aggravated. Here
then, is a necessity for a stimulant to reeupe
rate the energies of the system, and enable th.
mother to bear up under her exhausting trial,
and responsibilities. Nursing mothers gene,
rally prefer the Bitters to all other invigora,
tors that receive the endorsement of physi:
cians, because
. it is agreeable to the taste a.
well as certain to give a permanent inereus,
of bodily strength. •
