    THE CORNER.
LONGEVITY OF TOE RomaNs.—Among the Ro
mans, M. Votaries Corvinus was above the age of
one hundred at the time of his death ; Patties
and Cato, above ninety ; Tereutio, the wife of
Cicero, one hundred and three. There aro sever-
al instances of Roman actresses who became old,
a piece of good fortune which their profession in
these days can rarely least. One Linetja per
formed a whole century; and made her appose..
anee publicly when in her hundred and twelfth
year. Onleria Copiele was a sprightly damsel of
ninety when the appeared upon the boards. Ac
cording to 11 valuable collection in regard to the
duration of life, in the time of the Emperor Vas
pasien, preserved by Pliny from the record of the
census, an unquestionably creditable source, it
appears that in the year when that numbering of
the people took place, the seventy•sixth of our
era, there wore living in that part of Italy !teltich
lies between the Appenines and the Po, one lien
dred and twenty four men who had attained the
age of one hundred years and upwards, via
ty.four of ono hundred fifty-seven of a !tendril
and ten, two of it hundred and twenty. five, four
of a hundred and thirty, four of from one hun
dred
and thirty five to one hundred and thirty.
seven, and three of one hundred and forty. lle.
side* these there wore in Parma three men of one
bemired and twenty and thirty; at Forentbt a we.
man of one hundred and thirty two ; mid in Vel
lejecium, a small town near Placentia, six persons
who bad attained the age of a hundred and tell,
and four to that of a hundred and twenty.
VALISE Or AN EXPLANATION.—A certain King,
It is said, sent to another King, saying, "Send me
a blue pig with a black tail or else-." The
other, in a high dudgeon at the presumed insult
replied, "I have not got one, and if I had-."
On which weighty cause they went to war for
many years. After a satiety of glories and mis.
cries, they finally be thought them that, as their
armies and resources were exhaustell, and their
kingdoms mutually laid waste, it might be well
enough to consult about the preliminaries of
peace; but, before this could be con cludecl•a di
plomatic explanation was first needed of the' in
sulting language which had formed the ground
or the quarrel. "What could you mean," asked
the mond King of the first, "by saying *send
me a blue pig with a black tail, or else-r "
"Why," said the other, I "Meant a blue pig with a
black tail, or else some other color. Dot," re
tort,rd he "what could you moan by saying
Lave not got one, and if I had -r "Why,
of course, if I had I should have sent it;" an ex
-planation which was entirely satisfactory, and
peace was concluded accordingly.
SUMPTUARY Lows.—ln England, in the year
fifteen hundred and thirty-eight, it was enacted
that "no lady or knight's wife should hare more
than one velvet rrdemask gown for the rummer ;
that all ladles should wear russet or calmut throe
days in the week, under penalty of ten shillings
per day ; and that a surveyor should examine the
ladies ward-robes. Just fanny such a surveyor
in these days
pr. Last week, in the Gallery of the Louisi
ana Convention, ayoung gentleman unfortunate
ly sat down upon a portion of a lady's highly
erinolined dress but in an instant arose and said
beg your pardon Alias, but I hope I hare'nt
broken your umbrella." " Oh, no," said the
young lady blushing very much.
IgtiL. Byron was disenchanted when he saw
his inamorata eating. In other words, he falter
ed when henith And beauty were at ih tuke:

ne Commissioner of Pensions, too,
in his report to the Secretary of the
Interior, states some interesting facts
in regard to the surviving Revolution
ary soldiers. He says that--
"Of the 185 on the rolls the 30th of Jane, 1850,
but 87 remained to enjoy these small tokens of
their country's gratitude throughout the succeed
ing year. The number must, at the present time,
be considerably less, and in a brief period they
will probably lire only in the memory of a grate
fel country.
"It Is an interesting fact that among the few
that now survive is one who participated in the
first great battle of the War of Independence,—
Pensions bave•besn allowed to 66 widows of Rev.
olutionary soldiers during the year, making the
number now on the rolls 3,204, a diminution since
the lest anneal report of HO."
