THE CORNER. A Tistpiaa's STRATAGEM.--San *ratite relates the following anecdote of SO:Martz, a famous German pain ter. raving been engaged to paint the ceiling of the Town Hall at, Mu nich, by the day, his love of dissipa tion induced him to neglect his work, and the magistrates and overseers of the work were frequently obliged to hunt him out at the tavern. As he could no longs drink in quiet, he stuffed an image of himself, left the legs hanging down between the sta ging where he was accustomed to work, and sent one of his boon com panions to move the image a little two or throe times a day, and take it away at noon and night. By means of, this deception, he drank, without the least disturbance, a whole fort. night, tbeinnkeeper being aware of the plot. The .officers came around twice, a day to look after him, and seeing the well.k flown stocking which he was accustomed to wear, suspected nothing wrong, and went their way, greatly extolling their new convert as the most industrious and conscien tious painter in the world. air A Parisian Countess ditignised herself in male apptirel the other day to take a forbidden ride on the top of an omnibus. Thinking a passenger deceived, she talked earnestly to him about the miseries of college life, and he *4 up the conversation; but when they reached the terminus, and he banded her down, she was aston ished to hear him say: "take care, madame, not to hurt yourself." The deaf creatures cannot easily disguise themselves. ier Mrs. Partington is out again in. the Boston Gazette :—"'Tls terrible dog daisy, isn't it ?" said the old' la dy, dropping into the green velvet chair which we assign to particular visitors. She fanned herself violent ly. ' "The weather has a sirius and very exaggerating effect on me this Summer. There is such a lazitude and wearisomeness about me, that I feel 'more than ever that I am losing my vituperative powers." DISTRAINT' 808 RENT.-A gentle man in New Orleans was agreeably surprised the °tiler day, to find a plump turkey served up for his din ner, and inquired of his servant how it was obtained. "Why, sar," replied the darkey, "dat sr turkey is been roosting qp ourfence tree nights, so die mornin' I seized him for de rent ob defence." We A bevy of children were tell ing their father what they bad got at school. The eldest reading, spell ing, and definition. "And what do you get my little one ?" said the father ton rosy cheek. ed little fellow ' who was at the time slily driving atenpenny nail into the door panel. "Me? Oh, 1 gets readin', apellin', and.,spanking." , . . 4fir A 'Quaker in business in Boa. ton, disliking the'"Esq." to his name, advised a southern correspondent to direct his letters to Amos' Smith, with6titany tail, aud received a re. ply, superscribed, "Amos Smith, with. out 'any tail, Boston." Sir The most intonse mode of es. pressing contempt in Ali'wanks*, lel° exclaim: "Go, I have no more to say! I acorn you as I don glass of water t" so., A nudge said, addressing a prisoner, "you are to be hanged, and I hope it will prove a warning to yon." Throto zoct to _CALIFORNIA. C. S.
