FRETFUL .PEOPLE.
"Men make themselves uncomforta
ble, destroy the peace of their families,
and actually make themselves hated, by
fretfulness." Beecher says:
"it is not work that kills men ; it is
warry. Work is healthy.-You can hard•
ty put more on a man than he can bear.
Worry is rust upon the blade. it is not
tbe revolution that destroys the mac bin
ary but the friction. rear secretes acid,
hut love and trust are sweet juices.
"We knew a man with 4 patient, good
Christian wife, end we never heard him
speak a kind pleasant word to her, and
doubt if he ever did in the half century
they have lived together."
"He is always in a fret. Everything
.roes wrong. You would think that he
was made of cross-grained timber. and
bad always been trying to disgust a
crewcut saw. lie is eternally cross,
and thinks that his wife and cbildten,
hired hands, and all tee domestic ani.
'male, have entered into a combination
I. worry bi mto death. He is only rusty,
but fairly crusted over with it. He is
bncamad in a shell of acid secretions,
though which no sweet juices ever die.
till. Friction has literally worn him
out, and he will soon worry himself to
death. • Of course he has never worked
to any advantage to himself or any-body
else. With him evey thing always goes
wrong. He superstitiously believes it
is because the devil hes a spite against
him, when in truth it is nothing but
his own fretfulness.
011TTING IVlAnitieo, says the Maripo
sa Gazette, seems just at present to be
the order of exercises in this vicinity.
Several youngsters have within the past
weifs forsaken their mascultne.aoquaie
tutees, and it is to be hoped some of
their old habits, and pot themselves in
charge of the female sex, • Several more
pre, within a week or two, expected to
follow in the footsteps of their deluded
predeeessors, if the shadores of coming
events indicate anything. Unappropri

Several of the lunatics have , favored us
with luminous arguments in lavor of the
institution, the substance of which ap
peared to be, that it was cheaper. On
aski ngtehat was cheaper, we were grave
ly informed that putatops, beans, pick
les, cheese, dry goods, leather, and all
the concomitants of eating, drinking
and wearing, necessary to the preserva
tion of these our earthly tabernacles,
Could be furnished foible, particularly
if they ,were "one flesh," cheaper than
for a single masculine, subject to the
temptations of this life; and further, that
there are many very 4 preshes' joys ,
and many hidden' delights experienced
that the world knows nut of. We sup
pose the statement to be correct, but
we can hardly see into . it.
BADLY SOLD.-A little affair happen
ed the other day, nova thousand miles
from this place, which is too good to be
lost. Mr. A. called on one of our far
mers, and asked him the price of oats,
and - was informed that they were worth
$5 cents per bushel. He agreed to pay
40 cents on condition that he should be
permitted to tramp them in the half bush
el. He secured the bargain he paid for
l a bushels, and the next day took his
wagon and went after them. The far
mer filled the half bushel, after which Mr.
A. got in and gave them a moat vigorous
tramping, contracting- their proportions
Considerably. Farmer thereupon emp.
tied the oats into the bag wihout filling
up the measure. Mr. A. rayed, but it
was no use, 'the farmer had complied
with his part of the agreenfint, and, as
an evidence, told Mr. A. after he had
measured the oats; ho roighllramp them
all, day.

In April, IMO, as near as I can remember, a small
pimple toads its appearance on my lip, which 110013 be
came enlarged and sore. I used poultices of sorrel; and
wash of blue vitro!, without effect. Finding the sore
extending, I called on'Drt"Ely, of Schellebnrg, who pro-
nounced it Carmen, and prescribed a wash of sugar of
lead and bread poultice.,. Finding these remedies of no
avail, I called upon Dr. Shaffer, of Davklville, Somerset
county, who also - pronounced the disease Cancer, and
gave me internal and external remedies—the latter con
sisting principally of caustice; but all to no purpose,
the disease continued spreading toward the nose. I next
need a preparation of arseutc, in the form of salvo. This
for a time Chocked the diseeme, but the inflammation soon
increased. I next called upon Dr. Stotler, of St. Pairs

Cancer, and applied a ealei said to- be a never failing
remedy, but it had no effect whatever in chocking the
spread of the sore. 'HuDetiernber, of the same year, the
