'Tat ' 4 TOM BOY."
'Some persons seem still to entertain
the notion that young girls need no
training except that of the mental fac
ulties ; that their forms are of 'less con
-sequence than their dresses; and that a
developement of physical strength would
impair their delicacy, and tend to make
'them masculine. By restricting their
iphysical education and limiting their
'sphere of activity they are condemned
for life to enfeebled health, and an aim
less, idle existence. Let such parents
'ponder the truth embodied in the fol
lowing remarks, which we cut from the
Home Journal :
"The 'Tom-boy' is an eager, earnest,
rnpulsi ve,. bright-eyed, glad-hearted,
'kind-souled specimen of the genus fern
inae. If her laugh is a little too fre
'quent, and her tone a trine too emphat
ic, we are willing to overlodk these for
the sake of the true life and exulting
vitality to which they are the 'escape
valves;' and indeed we rather like the
high pressure nature which must close
off its superfluoos 'steam' in such ebuli
,tions. The glancing eve, the glowing
'Cheek, the fresh, balmy breath, the lithe
and graceful play of the limbs, tell a
tale_of healthy and vigoroutt physical
'development which is nature's best
beauty. The soul and the mind will be"
developed also in due time, and we shall
have before us a woman, in the nightie
sense of the term.
•
"When the 'Tom-boy' has sprung up
to a healthfOl and 'vigorous womanhood
'she will be Teed) , to take hold .rif the
duties of life, to become a worker in
the great system of humanity. She will
not sit down to sigh over. the 'work.giv
en her to do,' to simper nonsense, lan
luish in ennui or fall•siek at heart—krot
lam will ever be able to WES up the
burden of duty. In her track there will
be sound philosophy, in her thoughts
boldness and originality, in her heart
heaven's own purity, and the 'world will
be better thal.Whe 'has lived in - it.' To
her alloted task, she will bring health,
vigor, energy, and spirits, and these will
.give her both the power and the endur
ance without which her life must be, in
some respects at least, a failure."
CHINESE HABITS.
OM treaders have often read of the
'peculiar customs and almost increduloUs
dishes of our underground neighbors—
the Chinese. But the. following, writ
ten by one who mixes with them daily,
in California, we give as to us related:—
oln the markets, sucking-pigs and
Cogs are equally exposed for sale; the
one being ae readily purchased as the
other. The latter, however, are not
freely bought after they have been -fed
on animal diet, except by the very poor
est classes; but are nourished with milk
and rice on purpose for the table. In
the markets at Canton, I have observed,
side-by side, a pheasant and a cat; and,
-upon inquiry, found them to bear pre
theveme valise. The cormorant,
ihe, wild duck, theikawk and the pigeon,
beink respectively indulged in by the
ir ea vivant, while the salted rat, dried in
the sun seemed to be an object of pe
culiar-relish. Previous to their putting
(this animal to death, they frequently in
tict upon it the most excruciating ag.
ony ; whether or not upon the same
princip,le that we consider a hunted hate
. more delicate than one that has been
-shot, I leave-my readers to determine.
41 - 14V.e frequently seen a workman catch
4, rat, and, with the fore finger and
tkumb, dexterously break -all the ani
mals teeth, heaving it in that state until
tthie evening, when it is killed and flayed
for supper, They are, moreover, con
stantly in the habit of nailing the rat
upon a fiat board by the four paws, and
leaving it in that position for many
hours, and seem amazed at any one tak
ing
,compassion upon the wretched
beast. This animal is generally salt ed
and dried in the sun prior to being eat
ntsn, as they say they taste infliiitelymo‘re
4elicate after this preptration.",
