Great Crowds--Low Prices.
ONE morning , last week, as a friend and myself, were
leisurely walking out Market street, and on arriving
near the corner of Guillbrd street, our , attention was at
tracted to a large crowd of Ladies—and ['early all of
whom were provided with large market baskets, and
others with satcltels.hanging to their arms, and . were evi
dently intent upon the same object. Upon inquiry we
found' that in the Mansion' Ilouse, on the corner of OrtilL
ford and Market streeta, is located the extensive Dry
Goode, Grocery, 'Quecilewaro Store of our polite and
affable friends, FUNCK & BRO., who have just opened a
large stooleof4W %oder and that the great crowd: of La-
dies were their, revlarcustomers, who may be seen daily
at their counters, parchaNing their gob& All we saw
wore evidentlj ., . satisfied With their purchases ; were loud
in the praises of the excellent quality of their stock; 'and
all were of the tinariiiiione . Opinien that PUNCH &GIRO.
sell the best lituifities i at lower. prices, than any of their
competitors. So our.adOce.W6iddle to you, one and all,
both groat and small, to give_Futtes &13ao. a call, and they

TREATMENT OF SAILORS.
How the sailor is sometimes treated, may be
learned from the followingextract from Rev. Mr.
Taylor'S "Se'ved Yeats' Prinching in San Fran
cisco." This book gives some giaphie descrip
tions of the wrongs perpetrated on sailors :
When the sail , ,r's bill at the boarding-housp
runs up to cover the "advances," the landlord says
to him Jack, you must ship:"
"I won't do it," says Jack.
"You shall do it; you owo um a bundfdd . " dol
lars, and you must either pay me to-day or go to
sea in the ship Ch.a Mugs."
"0, I don't want to go to Ow yet," says Jack.
"0, well never mind," sayathe landlord, "ad
ore a eleverfellew, and you linty stay at my house
as long as you please, and r ky me when you get
ready.': Come, let's take a drink."
Jack, very glad to be on such good terms' with
the landlord, walks up to the bar, and drinks'io

insensible as a log. When he recovers from his
misterious sleep, ho is oat of sight of land. He
is awakened by the stern command
"Wake up here, and-go to work."
The poor fellow, rubbing his "eyes, inquires,
"What ship this? Whither bound ?" -
"To Hong Kong."
"How did I get here?"
"Why, you shipped, sir," says the master.
"I never - shipped in this ship."
"Yes you did, sir, and yen must go to work
without any more grumbling," replies the cap;
tain, sternly..:“..
"I want to see the articles,” says the sailor.
"Well, sir, heretheYlin, What is yourname?T i
"My name is John Waters."
"There it is, written on the articles in two pla .

"I never 'signed thostrartieles," replied John.
"No,".replieethe master, "you were too drank
to write your name, but there's your mark."
John puts his hand to his head and Studies a

to give you when' you get sober."
John takes the twenty-five dollars and .goes to
work. But you ask, "what did the land-shark
give to the sailor, to take away his senses so sud

It was composed of whiskey, brandy, gin, rum

the Lethean stream for aldozen hours. '

THE SUN'S DISTANCE FROM
THE EARTH.
Astronomical science ,dertionstrittes that the
distance of the sun from the earth must be at least
equal to 24.,04i times,the earth'S7radius4.atitins
the riiaittiMf, the earth iS nearly , ktii"'fliciusand
miles, it follows that - the sun's true distance from
the iarth, must be a out ninety-six million Miles.
"Ite order to obtain a more distinct idea of this
enormous distance, we may compute the time in
Which: it would be passed by _some, of the swift
estmotione with which we aretacquainted. A
twenty-four pound cannon-ball, fired with a charge
of eight pounds of gunpowder, is proJected with
a velocity of about - Six / teen, hundred feet in,
second. gupposing it were to continue to move
towards the sun with the same uniform velocity,
it would requilt about five years to pass from the
sum to the earth. Light itself, which travels with
the asthnishiiig velocity - of onS hundred andnine
ty-tio thousand five hundred Miles in a semifnd,
only reaches the earth eight Minutes
_and eigh
teen seconds after leaving the sun's surface.
