A Presbyterian minister named Reed, was going

house. Mr. Reed was taken with a frt in the night
and it was supposed ho bad died. The other min

Weal haw* Btu Body.—A few days ngo Ander
sen, the murderer, addressed a letter to Bishop
James, of the African church, Lancaster, request
ing that after the execution, hie. body might be
deposited in the grave yard attached to the church.
The letter was very earnest one, containing many
expeeseions cakmiated to convince the reader that
&bowlike Lad experienced great change of heart
and-wili.mally a penitent man. In it he implor
ed in rather strong terms the priviledge of being
buried in the church ground. The lette;, la duo
time, was laid before the oonsistory of the church
sod after lengthy debate the prayer of the peti

"The Trustees met and they will not have no

A NOVEL ATTEXPT TO OBTAIN A PARDON.
Tha old adage that "truth is stranger than fic

singular illustration of this precept was made
manifest on the Bth instant, by the insane con

Alton, Illinois. 11 appears that a desperado,
named William Lindsey, who was confined for
committing-a robbery in Champaign county, by
some means or other obtained possession. of

the absence of othiWi, he knocked him down, tied
his arms, and 'fastened his colldtior frith .a stick
of timber. When this fact beCtime.known, and
efforts - were made to obtain the release of the un
fortunate guardsman, the wretch rdfti*l to give
him up unless his inixdon were pivoted, and
