The Big Meetin g.
Ailn.rEurnest:—One of our veterans of the said
Democracy di the true school—a lolly retired
ifarmer, of comPlete Teutonic blood and notions,
and who wiii.oithar crank a rod joke or none at
all—made a remark to me the other day that cog
geeted a number of ideas. I was reading to him
from the Philadelphia "Press" the Editor's vaun t
ing account of the great "Anti-Lecompton Meet
ing got up in that City, and headed by his self
conceited and ealf-important self, in order to scare
the friends of the Administration. Ho epeaks with
most7triuraphatit air of the immense assemblage
of "Freemen," all whom he represents as Demo
crate united. under the banner of Forney .1, Co.,
to save the country from impending ruin—and in
elevated strain tries to make the "rest of mankind'
believe that such was the patriotic os*e' et of this
boat of sterling and "tried ittamoorate." When f
had finished reading these prompotts - nothings,
my friend, above mentioned, remarked, very tart
ly and to the point, that if the "tried Democrats"
of Philadelphia were called upon to hang Colonel
Forney, the number either of tried Democrats, as
he calls them, or rowdies of all or no parties, or
of the very sort that met on that occasion, would
not be a whit leas. And so I think, Mr. Editor.
Of course neither my friend nor myself thinks
east the Editor of the "Press" deserve/ to be ens
penaedin that fun:lion, yet we do believe that a
crowd of equal importance in number and charac
ter to the onein question could be scared up with
in as hour's notice to perform the hempen deed.
It Is very true, and it is to bo deeply regretted,
that many Demoortas hare been misled and gull
ed by the hypocritical appeals to the sacred prin
ciple of "Popular Bovereignty,"—for the name
sounds vary Demoeratic,—yet one thing I think is
certain, that the great body of the Democracy of
.Pennsylvania have not been carried away by the
mere echoes of Democratic maxims, sounded
forth by demagogues and traitors. If we know
nothing mere, we know this, that in our own
County, at least, the great Party is faith
ful and true, as it has ever been; and in spite
of the prodigious efforts of disappointed politi
cians to hold up the administration of Mr. Bu
chanan to the ridicule and contempt of the world;
in spite 4if Forney's great indignation meeting,
and the laststerrang .and Sussing of his Kansas
sheet, the Demoorney of Utile Lebanon remains
as unshaken as her "eternal hills." And should
a meeting be called at this very time to sustain
the Administration, I bare not the least doubt
that a demonstration would be made equal to the
numerical strength of the party. The dams ground
the "Advertiser" has taken in the present crisis
of Party affairs, I can assure you will bo most
heartily responded to from all quarters of the
County where there is a Democrat to be found.
The pure spirit of immortal Jefferson forbid,
that Vol. Forney or any other man should be de
nounced, or read out of the Party, merely for dif
fering from the President, on the Kansas or any
other question ! So long as he did nothing more
harmful than to express his at least apparently
honest dissent, and to defend his own position
through the columns of his paper, no one had. . a
right to charge- him with traitorous designs.
But now, when, with the.audecity of a Can/lice,
in damps of the unanswerable position of the
President, as expressed in Lis recent message to
Congress, Su.mgsri to the one only and final mode
by which the Kansas datable can be forever set at
rest—now., It . Say., *ben he throws the gauntlet
into the the Ikea of the Administration by head
ing an opposition mob, it is high time to beware
of the traitor, and in the hour of danger to fly to
the standard of our esteemed and righteous Presi
dent. WATCHMAN.

now near at hand, and the Democracy are look
ing about for suitable candidates for the State Of.
Beet next fall. In connexion with that of Canal
Commiasioner permit me to mention the name of
down McKEE, Esq., of Butler county. lie was
late Sheriff of that county, has been a contractor
on various public works, and is a thorough-going
Demotirat.' g 49 would bring experience into the
Canal .Board, and in my bumble opinion the Con
vention might go further and fare worse in the
Selection-of a candidate.

LETTER FROM LANCASTER.
LANCASTER, FRB. 20, 1858
A large and destructive five took place on
Wednesday evening, in West Chestnut street, lev
elling to the ground the extensive Iron Works of
Bon. Christian Kieffer. These works were three
stories high, occupying two-thirds of ahalf a
square, and by their destruction sixty hands are
thrown out of employment. The Iligh school, a
three story frame tobacco warehouse, belonging
to John S. Gable, and the extensive livery stables
of David Reese, were in imminent danger, but
through the persevering effoAts of our noble fire
man the fire was confined to the Iron Works.—
Had the warehouse 'caught, which was well stock
ed with leaf tobacco, the loss of property would
have been immensei and as it is, Mr. Kicifor loses
heavily, being insured for but $13,000. The pat
terns destroyed, (said to he one of the largest col
lections iu the state,) will amount to ,the sum' of
$30,000. The entire cost of the buildings and
their contents, is estimated at $75,000, of which
nothing remains but the ruined machinery and
the tottering walla The safe and books, togeth
er with a few other articles, is all that was saved.
I see by the papers that on Tuesday lust one of
our fair daughters was carried off by a Lebanon.

flict any other indignity, the same journal looks
upon his re-election as hopeless. Senatorial qual
ifications in Massachusetts must be eta very low

Daminput., ACCIDUNT.—The Harrisburg Tele
graph records a dreadful accident at "Union De
posit Furnaces," South Hanover, Pa. Ono of the
furnaces not working satisfactorily; in order to
ascertain what was wrong, the workmen engaged
in the work of cleaning the lower, part of the fur
nace out ; bit whilst they were so engaged, the
hot metal came running out in torrents, so unex
pectedly, that five persons wore literally showered
rer with the liquid fire, immediately setting their
clothing on fire and burning them in a dreadful
and shocking manner. Some of the unfortunate
men jumped into the canal, and others into the
water tub; but this proved unavailing—they wore
so dreadfully burned that no human help could
savc them. John 'Baler, David Landis, W. Mur
ray, and a man called Dutch John, have since
died from their wounds, end were buried yester,
day, whilst Moses Wolf, another of the injured,
can hardly survive his injuries.

"Greenleaf's Labor Saving-Grammar,' by which
a child can "learn as much in six days as he can
learn by any other system in six month of irk.

In speaking of the usual method of teaching
English Grammar, the learned Pres. Mason, D. D.,
observes,—"Children hare to labor year after year.
without much progress, though a literary swamp;
and when they grow weary their steps are often
quickened by the birch. , while the blame is wholly'
and solels to be attrilitztett to the -vapid method of
instruction.'
Who can toll us anything about Grcenleart
Grammar? If it be really such a labor-saving
machine, why has it not been introduced into our
schools? If a boy can learn grammar in six days
ho will surety not need'inore than 7 to learn ge
ography, 8 history, 9 chemistry, 10 writing, 11
mathematics and about a fortnight more to com
plete all his other studies ! What a satin. cif
time! The matter is worth inquiring intell

of Hempfield township, Westmoreland county, Pa.,
says the Republican, while working in tit e'w oods,
was attracted by some noise on a tree near by,
when upon looking around discovered an eagle.
