MIN ATLANTIC TELEGRAPII CABLE.—Another attempt is to be made to, lay the Atlantic subma rine cable next summer. They will start with not less than 3000 miles of cable, which will be on board of the Niagara and Agamemnon, as before. They will commence laying it in the middle of the oeean and run it out , both ways, thus saving one half thertime that would otherwise be consumed. The feasihility of this , plan is doubted by the Lon don Times. . . Arnie Connellsville (Pa.) Enterprise gives us thifollowing. A blind family, consisting of tour persons, John i Catharine, Bartholomew, and ;Samuel Hostetler, were bt;rn in Gartman township in this county—the whole.Of than being at - the time of their birth, and are at the present time' destitute of eye-balls, but have all the other' out ward mechanism of the eyes complete. This fain tly is indeed a curiosity, aside from tho wonderful proficiency they exhibit as musicians. There exe. ecution on the various instruments--violin, banjo, tenor-drum, elarionet—is surprising, and they are giving concerts in .different_ places. The Message and Kansas.—lt is very possible that Mr. Buchanan, in his forthcoming Message, may not pass an opinion on the acceptance or re jection by Congress of the Kansas Constitution. He has no responsibility in the matter; his only duty being to transmit the instrumen kite C.ongress, after which that body will net upon it. The Kan sas Constitution will not be before the President before the 21st. inst., when he may consider it the fitting time to accompany its transmission to ex press his opinions in a special message. We hope be may do so, as he would no doubt give the Many sided Kansas question its quietus. CHINESE AnsZoll9.—Amon the camp follow ers of the Insurgent chief wb o has been disturbing the heart of the empire, it wee computed, in 1853 that there were in the city of Nanking only, about half a million women collected from various parts of the country. These femalett are formed into brigades of 13,000, under female.offtcers. Of these 10,000 were picked women, drilled and garrisoned In the citadel. The rest bad the hard drudgery assigned to them of digging moats, making-earth works, erecting batteries, &T. AN Istroursarr INTSNTION.—James L. Catheart of Georgetown D. C., has at length succeeded in perfecting the navigation of canals with steam pow er. The great draw-back hitherto in the applies . tioa of steam to canal boats has been the injury occasioned to the banks by the revolution of the wheels. The new invention renuives this objeaion 'lts the propeller and, peculiar arrangement of the machinery attached to the boat actually increases the depth and width of the channel by washing the bottom & depositing the mud upon the banks. 3fr. Catheart deserves credit and profit for his scientific improvement, more particularly as the undertaking was accomplished during the few hours of leisure allotted to an official existence in Washington. i fir;Col.• Colt, the famous manufacturer of •re volTers, we see by the Hartford (Conn.) THE KANSAS QITESTON. So much has been written and said on the "Kan sas question," 'in its various and many phases, that requiresvonsiderable tact to say something thereon that may be interesting to, or even under stood by, our readers. Many of the reports we have from Kansas are perverted, others aro ab surd, and but very few have truth for a founda tion. The opposition papers at present are filled with column articles on the "distasteful constitu tion" of the Lecompton Convention, "that the ma jority of the people of Kansas would rather resist it by force of arms," and all that, than submit to it, when at the same time it is a matter of com plaint by Gov. Walker that he has not seen the Constitution, and could not obtain a sight of it before he left the Territory. Even President Bu chanan had not seen it last week, nor knew'of its provisions. No person knew what it contained, save the members, of the Convention that framed it, and probably does not at this present moment. Notwithstanding this, the opposition papers are filled with articles condemnatory of this very Con stitution of which duty know not a single provi sion. Not knowing anything more about the matter than they do, we bide our time, feeling confident that when , President Buchanan 's :Dies sage appearsi (probably in a day or two,) his will occupy a position that will confound the opposi tion in their hopes of a. LETTER FROM LANCASTER:: Amateur Vocal and Institmental Entertain ment—Kate Doan—The rottionotaryship•-- Codfish'Aristacratioltage Hayes and Editor Geist--Ale "Advertiser." LANCASTER, Dec. 5, 1557. Ain. Banstur;---Dear Sir:—On Thursday even ing last, the first rehearsal of the vocal part of the concert of musical amateurs for the benefit Of the poor, took place. The turnout of both sexes, was large,-and it bids fair, to be one of the best enter tainments of the kind yet given in this city. The instrumental - portion is also making every effort to produce - some of the choicest pieces. This isa very laudable enterprise, the intention being . not to give the concert till after the holidays, when the present projected aid is exhausted, then the fund obtained is to replenish the treasury for the needy poor, Speaking of the poor, reminds pie of the following beautiful lines penned for the Daily Express of this city. ' While on the subject of Concerts, I would state that announcement has been made that Kate Dean, a vocalist of some note, who has been under the care and training of Bagioli, in New York, the past two years, will sing in Felton Hall, this evening. The New York critics are loud in her praise, saying she is a vocalist of the Jenny Lind classification; indeed, if the lithographs of her, exhibited in the bookstore windows, aro true like nesses, she has the rough unfeminine 'appearance ofJenny.f I shall have lucre to say after I have heard bor. or Judge Hayes, associate law judge of our court, is being rather roughly handled by Mr. Geist, Editor of the Express, for the extreme partiality shown in hie charge to the Jury in the Bachman embezzlement case.
